I awoke to the light of the moon filtering in through the plantation blinds, our room quiet as a mouse. The measure of Scott’s breathing told me he was out cold. I turned over to face my clock that flashed 2:33 a.m. with its neon-blue digits. Why was I awake? A dry mouth answered me. Thirst. I did eat a lot of pizza, and I did have two cosmos. I sat up, trying to rouse my mind enough to head to the bathroom to get some water.

All at once, a noise came out of nowhere. What was that?

I froze. Was it the wind hitting the house? The forecast had called for high winds, the enemy of outdoor Christmas decorations. Plus, this house was new, and I needed to get acquainted with its creaks and gentle moans. A nearby oak cast its shadowy branches across my window, and I found myself imagining it waving hello.

I lowered my feet to the floor and stood, my body suddenly cold. After making love, I often slept naked next to Scott, but in the winter, my shoulders had a way of chilling the rest of my body. Realizing this, I shuffled over to my closet and grabbed a nightshirt and pants made of brushed cotton.

Another sound came from … upstairs? I gazed at the ceiling. Was it a scrape or …? I struggled to process.

And then bang.

My heart practically leaped out of my chest.

Okay, that wasn’t the wind. And that wasn’t a tree, either, unless one was coming through our second floor right now. I crept over to Scott and shook his shoulders. “Scott, I heard a noise upstairs.” Terror engulfed my senses, making it difficult to breathe.

“Can we have our snacks now, Mrs. Williams?” Trina, my petite student with short, blond hair asked with a hopeful spark in her greenish-blue eyes.

“Sure.” I stood. “Go ahead and grab your snacks and sit at your desks for snack time. But wash your hands first. Knowing the drill, my students made their way to the bathroom to scrub up. Thankfully, they never seemed to mind.

“I’ll continue reading our first Magic Tree House book, Dinosaurs Before Dark.” I made my way to the story corner where a cushy carpet covered the floor, and a small bookcase displayed our class selections. With book in hand, I dragged a stool to the front of the room. “Do you all remember where we left off?” This was always a good way to see how much they had retained from a previous reading.

But before anyone could answer me, my walkie-talkie crackled to life on my desk. I lifted my index finger. “Hold that thought. I’ll be right back.”

Oblivious, the students opened their respective snacks and drinks, chatting with each other about the dodgeball game while I grabbed my walkie-talkie. Giselle hovered near the students in case anyone needed help opening a chip bag or a juice box.

I lifted the walkie-talkie close to my ear and heard what sounded like Principal Robbins say, “Lockdown. This is not a drill. Code 3. Shelter in Place. Follow protocol.” My heart leapt into my throat. Code 3 meant there was a possible threat on campus!

Holy crap!

From within my desk, my cell phone, which remained on vibrate, blew up a moment later. I pulled open the drawer and scanned the warning texts from the school as well. Another protocol. There was no chance I’d misunderstood, though I’d held onto that hope for a brief moment.

Trying to ignore my racing heart, I grabbed my lockdown binder and flung it open to the procedural page. “Giselle, can you read to the students for me?” I rushed over and handed her the book, trying to stay calm.

“What’s going on?” she mumbled, one of her hands half-covering her mouth.

“Lockdown, Code 3. We need to shelter in place.”

From Here to Eternity is a captivating read, from beginning to end. The characters are well-developed with vulnerability and undeniable charm. Their story is well written, sucking you in from the very first page. In true A.L. Jackson fashion, the lyrical writing and plot are all-consuming. The author knows just how to make your heart melt and your pulse race.

Charleigh and River were a force to be reckoned with. Like calls to like, their tortured souls somehow knew they were meant for each other. Their chemistry oozed off the pages and will leave you breathless for more. Their road to happily ever after isn’t an easy one. Both had secrets and baggage and for Charleigh, a past she’d like to forget. I loved watching these two navigate their way through all the forces surrounding them. Trust me when I say this couple is definitely worth rooting for.

From Here to Eternity is a sexy and sweet romantic suspense that kicks off the Moonlit Ridge series with one heck of a start and I can not wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.

My Review

“Brice Harper reminded her of all the things she loved about Texas and cowboys.”

Cowboy, Cross My Heart is the second book in the Heart of Texas Series and it follows the story of Brice and Naomi. When Naomi returns home to photograph her best friend, she can’t help but be swept away in the life she used to have. Finding that special someone may not have been on the menu for Naomi, but when she meets Brice, all bets are off…Brice is the total cowboy. He’s full of heart, totally sweet, charming and can’t resist helping someone in need. So, when he discovers someone is harassing Naomi, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe…

Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable read. This is my first book by this author, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to her writing style. But, I have to say, I thought this book was written well. This story pulls you in instantly and will keep you on your toes the entire time. I loved all the suspenseful moments, the danger lurking around every corner. I enjoyed Brice and Naomi together. Their sparks were instant and their romance was definitely a case of insta-love, but I think it worked really well with these two. I enjoyed seeing Brice come back to life and open his heart to another woman. I liked seeing the possessiveness he had for Naomi and how he’d stop at nothing to protect her. I thought Naomi was a great character. She was super protective of those she lets get close and is a really great friend. Together, these two had some great tension and it was fun watching the two of them try to figure things out.

Cowboy, Cross My Heart was a quick and easy read for me. I definitely think you could finish this book in a single sitting. I loved the suspense and mystery of the story. I think the addition of the villain’s point of view really added to the story and had me turning the pages faster to see how the story was going to play out. My only complaint is that I feel like the ending of the book was a bit rushed. I feel like after the great build of mystery and suspense, that the resolution came too quickly. I would have liked to have seen it more paced with the rest of the story. Other than that, I think the story was great. Cowboy, Cross My Heart is a quick read that will grab you from the first page and will keep you on your toes. This story has just the right amount of steam, action, suspense and of course romance. This is my first book by this author and it most certainly won’t be my last. I look forward to discovering more from this author in the future.

Review: Twined Bond (Holly Woods Files #7) by Emma Hart

My Review

I have been following this series from the very first book and with each book that followed, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with not only the story, but the characters. I am so not ready to say goodbye to Noelle and Drake and the whole Bond clan. Their story has entertained me. It has thrilled me. It has made me laugh my ass off and it has put tears in my eyes…

Twined Bond was everything I could possibly ask for in the conclusion of Drake and Noelle’s story. It’s not all sunshine and roses, because let’s face it, everything can’t possibly go right in Drake and Noelle’s world. And what would their story be without a little death and mystery along the way. And since you know there is no way in hell I am going to spoil this epic ending for you, I will tell you this: Settle in. Get comfortable and just enjoy the ride. Devour each world and live each moment. Feel the love and devotion that Drake and Noelle have for one another. Live through the ups and downs and see just how far these characters have come. As sad as I am to see this story come to end, I have to say that Emma Hart has knocked it out of the park with this story. She has given me the most satisfying ending and has left me with the biggest smile on my face. Thank you so much Emma Hart for this incredible story and these amazing characters. I will never forget them….

“I think I did last night when I hugged Casey.” He winks at me.

I playfully shove his chest. “It made me think. That’s all.” I slide my hand down his stomach and, in a small voice, say, “I think you’d be a great dad.”

“What if you don’t answer?”

“And just like that, he makes me forget why I was ever worried about marrying him,” I tease.

He simply looks over his shoulder, smirks, and throws me a second wink.

The moment the coffee machine stops, the kitchen fills with silence.

One that makes my idea buzz loudly.

“Drake.”

“Mhmm?” He turns around, still stirring sugar and cream into his coffee.

Review: Sugar Free (Sugar Bowl #3) by Sawyer Bennett

My Review

Sugar Free is the exciting conclusion to the Sugar Bowl series. This book picks up right where we last left off and delivers a fast paced and thrilling read. Sela and Beck’s story captivated me the entire time. This book was filled with so many twists and crazy situations. I was on the edge of my seat, wondering just how everything was going to play out. There were times where I thought there was no way out, and I just had to keep reading. I had to see how the story would come together in the end.

Sela and Beck do not disappoint in the final installment of their story. They will be tested in ways that they never anticipated. But the one thing that remains strong through it all is the love and devotion that they have for one another.

Sugar Free is an exciting read from start to finish. It pulls you in and entertains you. The characters are intriguing and will have you wrapped up in their dark tale. This story is filled with drama, romance and suspense. And I couldn’t have been happier with the way things turned out.
