EXCERPT

Instinctively, he dropped the towel, and his hands closed around her upper arms. “I’ve got you.”

No, he didn’t. She’d been managing on her own for years, and wasn’t about to start depending on a guy who’d left her all alone to deal with the consequences of their brief…thing. She tried to take a step back, but her double-crossing hands didn’t leave his shoulders. Instead, they slid down and molded to his chest.

“Sorry, I…” she stuttered.

“I’m not.” His hands closed over hers, and his thumbs caressed back and forth over the tops of her fingers.

An electric current shot up her arms, down her spine, and tingled all the way to her curling toes.

“I should be sorry.” Dylan’s soft breaths brushed over her cheeks. “Joe’s has a lot at stake, and your plumbing has been allowed to deteriorate due to lack of use.”

He had no idea.

His gaze smoothed over her burning cheeks. “That’s a problem I’d like to remedy for you.” A dimple appeared as one corner of his mouth lifted into a hint of a smile. “I’d benefit from it, too.” The dimple deepened.

Time slowed.

A bone-deep ache of desire stirred in her chest. Before she could stop herself, she went up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his.

“The feeling I have in this very moment, after not seeing her for so long, will haunt me forever, reminding me why I left to begin with.”

For as long as I can remember, Easton Crews has been off-limits. As much as it kills me, that’s never going to change.

After his little disappearing act three years ago, then suddenly showing up out of nowhere, I shouldn’t want anything to do with him.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful he still is. Or how close we once were. It shouldn’t matter that my entire body lights on fire with need whenever he gets close.

He chose the worst possible time to leave without so much as a goodbye.

However, just like the first day he walked into our home, I’m drawn to him, needing him near me just as badly as I need air to breathe, and I can’t stand it.

I want to hate him. I know I should hate him. But hating him is the last thing he’ll let me do.

I push, he pulls harder, until I’m completely wrapped up in him, my mind lost in the one person who is forbidden—the one person I’ve always loved, even when he belonged to someone else.

Easton was never meant to be mine. It took me years to come to terms with that and now that I finally have, he’s here, right in front of me, more irresistible than ever.

The part I fear the most about that—he’s the one person capable of completely wrecking my world.

“I’m not leaving until you take all of your hate out on me. Let me feel it. All of it. Every dirty look. Every nasty word. I will have it all before I leave. Stop hiding from me.”

She stops and turns around when she hears my boots crunching in the gravel behind her. The cold look in her eyes is almost enough to freeze my damn heart. “Don’t you dare follow me, Easton. Turn back around and go inside.” With pained eyes, she points at the building and screams. “GO!”
After yelling at me, she immediately turns back around and starts walking again to get away from me.
Ignoring her demand, I stalk toward her, wrapping my arm around her waist right as she attempts to straddle her motorcycle.
“You’re not driving home,” I say, while squeezing her waist and pulling her against me. “I get that you want fast right now. That you need a rush to clear your head. Trust me, I know you. I’m the one that got you addicted, but you’ve had too much to drink.”
“You don’t need to worry about what I do,” she growls out in anger, before elbowing me in the stomach in an effort to get away. “Dammit! Let me go. I need to leave. I can’t be here.”
She’s still trying to fight me, so I carefully lower her to the gravel and trap her under my body, pinning one of her legs underneath mine. “Give me your keys,” I growl, an inch away from her lips. “Don’t make me force them out of your hand. I can pin you under my body all night if I fucking have to, Kota.”
“Yeah, I don’t think my brother would like that much.” She attempts to buck me off with her hips, but it does nothing.
I smirk down at her and push my hips closer against her body. “Fight me all you want. I’ll win.”
“Fuck you, Easton!” Breathing heavily, she lays still and fights to control her breathing from below me. After a few seconds, her eyes meet mine, and she grins. “Fetch.” She tosses her keys across the parking lot and then pushes my chest, speaking against my lips. “Now. Get. Off.”
I release a hard breath and take a moment to analyze her face. It feels like forever since I’ve seen it.
Her big, gray eyes are framed by long lashes and her dainty, freckled nose is now pierced and flaring out in anger.
Catching me off guard, she pushes her way out from under me and closes her eyes as she runs her hands over her face and lays back. “Just leave me be. I don’t want to be anywhere near you. I’ll have Hope take me home.”
“You really mean that?” I question with a tight jaw. “You still hate me after three damn years?”
“How can I not?” she bites out, before jumping to her feet, ignoring my hand as I reach it out to help her. “You tore my heart out. Now get out of my way.”
I bite my lip, holding in my anger as she pushes past me and disappears inside.
I’m still standing out here with my hands in my hair when she walks back out a few minutes later following Hope to her old, beat-up truck.
My heart pounds relentlessly as I watch them hop inside and drive away.
You tore my heart out.
Those five words hurt like hell. She’s always been good at making me feel.

Review: The Orphan’s Song by Lauren Kate

Posted on

The historical adult debut novel by # 1 New York Timesbestselling author Lauren Kate, The Orphan’s Song is a sweeping love story about family and music–and the secrets each hold–that follows the intertwined fates of two Venetian orphans.

A song brought them together.
A secret will tear them apart.

Venice, 1736. When fate brings Violetta and Mino together on the roof of the Hospital of the Incurables, they form a connection that will change their lives forever. Both are orphans at the Incurables, dreaming of escape. But when the resident Maestro notices Violetta’s voice, she is selected for the Incurables’ world famous coro, and must sign an oath never to sing beyond its church doors.

After a declaration of love ends in heartbreak, Mino flees the Incurables in search of his family. Known as the “city of masks,” Venice is full of secrets, and Mino is certain one will lead to his long-lost mother. Without him, the walls close in on Violetta and she begins a dangerous and forbidden nightlife, hoping her voice can secure her freedom. But neither finds what they are looking for, until a haunting memory Violetta has suppressed since childhood leads them to a shocking confrontation.

Vibrant with the glamour and beauty of Venice at its zenith, The Orphan’s Song takes us on a breathtaking journey of passion, heartbreak, and betrayal before it crescendos to an unforgettable ending, a celebration of the enduring nature and transformative power of love.

MY REVIEW

“Love, as Mino felt it, meant taking your beloved in your arms, tipping her lips, and saying I love you with all of yourself.”

I’m not gonna lie. I am a huge fan of Lauren Kate’s young adult books and totally loved her Fallen Series. So, when I heard that Lauren Kate was not only dipping her toes in Adult Fiction, but Historical Romance, I just knew I had to get my hands on this book.

The Orphan’s Song is set in 1736 Venice. On the rooftop of the Hospital for Incurables, fate has brought together Violetta & Mino. Both being orphans with big dreams and holes in their hearts. They form an unbreakable bond. Milo & Violetta want nothing more than a bright future that they have been denied. Mino longs to escape and build the life he’s always dreamed of, but Violetta wants nothing more than to sing. Despite the love that they built and the bond that they share, life has taken them on two different paths. Both are desperate to make their dreams come true, but their dreams couldn’t be more different than their reality….

The Orphan’s Song was a truly enchanting story. It’s filled with rich history, romance, and intrigue. Milo & Violetta’s story pulls you in instantly and consumes you. Milo & Violetta’s journey is complicated and filled with lots of ups and downs. A song might have brought them together, but life tore them apart. They were set on two different paths, forever changing their lives. That is until fate decides once again to reunite these two young lovers.

As someone who struggles with historical romance/fiction, I really loved being able to lose myself in this story and these characters. Lauren Kate has created a truly unique and intriguing story that will keep you glued to the pages. You will get swept up in the music, and the scenery. I enjoyed everything about this story, from beginning to end and am so glad I decided to take a chance on this book.

Review: Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar by Rachel Higginson

Posted on

My name is Clover Calloway and I’ve lived two separate lives.

The first, I like to call “my past.” I never talk about it. I try not to think about it. My rockstar days of playing in one of the hottest bands on the planet are over. Along with the most volatile, beautiful, tragic love story of all time.

Over the past five years, I’ve settled into my second life. My “normal life.” The one where I work a normal job, hang out with normal people and fall in love with a normal, but wonderful guy. The life where I’m admittedly a little bored, but also safe.

My past wasn’t boring. But my past broke my heart into a million, unfixable pieces. So, I’m determined to keep it where it belongs—behind me.

And the man responsible for the shattering of me? Malachi Porter, lead singer and mastermind of Bright Tragedy, should stay there too. Far away from me and this idyllic life I’ve carved out for myself.

But what happens when my two lives collide?

When Malachi comes crashing into my perfectly normal world, he threatens to destroy it, promises to annihilate everything I’ve replaced him with.

He upends everything I thought I wanted and forces me to question the reasons I left Bright Tragedy all those years ago.

But I didn’t walk away five years ago, I ran. As fast as I could go. And while my heart is whispering that it’s different this time—that he’s different—my brain is screaming for me to run again.

Malachi Porter isn’t a normal guy. And he doesn’t belong in my “normal life.” But, nevertheless, he’s bound and determined to make a place for himself here.

I just hope my heart can survive him, that we don’t burn into another bright tragedy.

MY REVIEW

“When the two of us were together, we were all that existed in the world.”

“This song was going to end us the same way we did five years ago—one gloriously intense bright tragedy.”

“I wanted normal. Simple. A love so deep I could feel it with every breath. A love so long and endless and consuming there were not words accurate enough to describe it. A love that would heal me. Hold me. Help me.”

“Kai Porter was the devil that had come back into my life, asking me to hand over my soul so he could what he wanted with it. And I was the idiot that had agreed. Okay indeed.”

Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar is a rock star romance destined to sweep you off your feet and make you believe in second chances.

When I heard that Rachel Higginson was writing a rock star romance, I was totally giddy. I couldn’t wait to see what she would bring to the table and I was not disappointed. Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar is an angsty second chance romance that will pull at your heartstrings and take your emotions on one heck of a rollercoaster ride.

Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar follows the story of Clover and Kai. Clover has a past that she doesn’t let most people in on. And when her boyfriend surprises her with concert tickets to see his favorite band, Clover’s quiet existence is about to be turned upside down. Clover suddenly finds her past and present together. Her once normal life is now anything but. Her secret is out of the bag, and she’s brought face to face with the one man who destroyed and still owns her heart. And when an opportunity of a lifetime presents itself, Clover can’t help but jump on it. It’s supposed to be just one song…Will that one song remind Clover of all that she’s missed and rejoin the past? Or will this proposition destroy her for good this time?? There’s only one way to find out….

Man, oh man, did I love this story. I fell in love with Clover the moment I met her. She is wickedly talented yet reserved. She loves hard and guards her heart. Walking away from Kai all those years ago was the hardest thing she’s ever had to do. But, if she wanted any chance at a real life, she had to do it. She couldn’t continue to be his crutch. She couldn’t continue to watch him spiral. It wasn’t easy trying to move on, but boy did she ever try. And then there is Kai. It’s no secret that Kai has struggled with addiction. Unfortunately for him, he had to hit rock bottom before any changes would made. It wasn’t easy getting sober, but once Kai sets his mind to something, you know it will get done. He’s a changed man, but still has his own demons and when life presents him with a second chance, he grabs on to it with both hands.

Kai and Clover’s journey wasn’t an easy one. They had a lot of pain and heartache to move past. They had to learn to become friends and rebuild their foundation. I loved watching them go through the motions and see them come out to the other side. I enjoyed seeing how they worked together and just how talented they both were. Their connection was stronger than ever, no matter how much they both tried to deny it. I loved the slow burn. I think it led to some incredible will they/won’t they moments. My heart ached for these two and I couldn’t wait to see how their story would play out.

Never Fall in Love with a Rockstar was a terrific read, from beginning to end. The characters were a lot of fun and the story-line was entertaining. I had a wonderful getting lost in Kai and Clover’s story and I really enjoyed this author’s take on a rockstar romance. We were introduced to a lot of terrific characters and I really, really hope that this won’t be the last that we see of them.

EXCERPT

Cade released me, setting my feet back on the ground and led me toward the bar area of the restaurant. It was set out of the way of the front windows in a darker, more private section.

“We’re back here,” he told me.

Too happy to be spending time with him, I didn’t realize I was being ambushed until it was too late. “We’re?”

“Don’t hate me,” he murmured as we turned the corner.

Kai stood up as we walked into the empty space. Gray, Malcom, and Pete were there too, but I didn’t notice them. It was Kai’s blue eyes that surprised the hell out of me. It was Kai’s dominating, ferocious presence that completely stole my breath.

“What are you doing here?” I demanded in a voice too breathy to be scary, echoing the same words he’d said to me last night.

Kai’s intense gaze held me prisoner, but it was Cade’s request that upended my entire world. “We want you to come back.”

Come back to what? “Come back?”

“To the band,” Kai explained.
“Come back to us.”

YOU WERE MY PERFECT STORM

My world stopped turning six years ago.
My best friend. My best girl.
A burning field in the pouring rain.
I survived, but I left the biggest part of me with them.
And now I sift through the rubble of my broken life.

I didn’t want a second chance.
Redemption. Closure.
Not for me.

Until Gelsey.
A dancer. A dreamer. Everything I’m not.
She’s the light to my dark.
The sun from another sky.

But sunny days never last.
The storm is coming.
And this time when darkness falls, I might surrender.

Excerpt
MILES

Gravel crunched under the tires as my truck coasted to a stop on the shoulder of the two-lane highway. Cutting the engine, I sank against the leather upholstery and looked out at the open field. And for a moment, the thin veil separating then and now slipped away, and it was six years ago. On my back beneath the smoke-filled sky, I’d waited for death to claim me. To put an end to the pain.

I was sure it would.

But then I heard the voices. First Rhenn’s—so faint it was nothing more than a whisper.

And then Tori’s.

But not Paige.

Never Paige.

Shifting my gaze to the passenger seat, I almost expected to find her there. But the space was empty. Except for the sealed bottle of Maker’s Mark. Rich, amber liquid whispering promises of peace. Of oblivion.

Lies. All lies.
Because no matter what I drank or smoked or swallowed, peace eluded me. Tranquility had died in this field all those years ago. Crushed under the weight of twisted metal and drowned in the pouring rain.

Grimacing, I dug my fingers into the muscle on my thigh, right over the area where the bone had come through the skin. My leg had suffered the worst of the trauma. Broken femur. Dislocated knee cap. A spiral fracture to my tibia. Maybe if I weren’t a drummer, it wouldn’t have mattered. But the injuries had silenced my beat. Sadly, there was no grave to mark its passing. No monument to the lost rhythm. Just this empty field.

I guess that’s why I always ended up here. In the place where the music died. Right alongside my best friend and my best girl.

Blowing out a breath, I stashed the bottle in the inner pocket of my leather jacket. Two stints in the psychiatric ward at Millwood, and I knew better than to dance this close to the fire. But I didn’t care. I wasn’t planning on drinking it.

Throwing open the heavy door, I braced a hand on the steering wheel and slid off the seat, making sure to land on my good leg. I didn’t bother with my cane. There was no need for pretense.

Not here.

As I waded into the dried brush, “Blackbird” blared from my phone’s speaker. Tori. I’d lost track of how many times she’d called.

And yeah, I got it. She was concerned.

Less than twenty-four hours ago, we’d been on stage at Zilker Park, capping off the biggest rock festival Austin had ever seen. A Damaged reunion. One last hurrah for the fans. And closure for Tori and me.

Finally.

Except…nothing felt closed.

And as much as I wanted to, I couldn’t talk to Tori about it. Not now.
She’d finally moved on from her grief. Fallen in love again. And in some strange way, that had brought us back together.

After the accident, we’d drifted apart. And that was a good thing. Something we’d needed to do. Because when we had been together, sharing the same space, it was like the sum of our losses was too big. All-consuming.

Knowing that Tori was out there in the world with a heart as heavy as mine had made my own burden a little easier to bear.

But now I felt the weight of it more acutely than I had in years. A fact I was determined to hide. So, I’d been avoiding her calls.

Reaching the far end of the field, I eased onto the soft ground beneath the burned-out shell of the elm tree where I’d found Rhenn and lost him minutes later.

“Hey, buddy. Guess you know about that gig last night.” My voice fell to a whisper, and I looked down. “Of course you do.” Squeezing my eyes shut, I blew out a staggered breath and pulled the whiskey from my pocket. “It was weird, you know, not having y’all there to celebrate. So I thought I’d bring the celebration to you.”

Twisting off the cap with shaky fingers, I fought the urge to bring the bottle to my lips.

One drink. What could it hurt?

As I pondered throwing away years of sobriety, a gust of wind blew across the field, kicking up topsoil and dust.

Chuckling, I rubbed the sand out of my eyes. “Message received. You don’t have to get all testy about it.”

I wasn’t an alcoholic. Or a drug addict. But booze was still a slippery slope. A year after the crash, I’d landed in rehab from an “accidental” overdose that wasn’t an accident at all. It only took the counselor a week to get to the root of my real problem. Soul-crushing depression—the clinical kind.

They’d fixed me up with medication that kept the dark clouds at bay. Mostly. But I never told anyone about my diagnosis. Somehow it was easier to let people believe I was a drunk.

With a sigh, I turned the bottle upside down. “Miss you, bro.” After the last drop of liquor-soaked into the hallowed ground, I hauled to my feet. “See you on the other side.”
Taking a last look around, I stopped breathing when I spotted a little patch of wildflowers some twenty yards away. Most of the blossoms had wilted on the stems. But a few buds remained.

Red, like Paige’s hair.

After all this time, I’d found her.

My feet moved swiftly with little protest from my bad leg. Brushing a hand over the velvety soft petals, tears spilled onto my cheeks, surprising me. Because I’d never cried for Paige. She didn’t visit me in my dreams. And I couldn’t see her face when I closed my eyes.

That was my penance. The price I’d paid for rejecting her that final night.
But she was here with me now. Her scent on the breeze, and her warmth on my skin. And she gave me the one thing I’d been searching for, even if I didn’t deserve it.

Forgiveness.

MY REVIEW

“We’re more comfortable together, more in sync than we have been. What started out as a chemical thing–a lustful attraction–has given way to more, despite my best efforts.”

“Presley’s warmth and softness and sweet scent envelope me until nothing else exists. Until she’s my whole world.”

“That is love. Love is messy and imperfect. It isn’t that you aren’t capable of it. It’s that you’re overwhelmed by it.”

Ahhhh!!! Seven Nights of Sin was soooo worth the wait!! After the way things ended with The Two Week Arrangement, I have been dying to get my hands on this book. I had to know what happened next and was just beside myself with glee when this baby showed up on my kindle.

Seven Nights of Sin picks up right where The Two Week Arrangement left off. We are left to deal with the aftermath of what happened between Dominic and Presley. Dominic is beyond mad at Presley for the things that happened, but as you know, everything isn’t always so black and white. Despite the hurt Dominic may feel, he can’t help but come running when Presley needs him….Presley knows the situation looks bad, but will do anything to get Dominic to hear her side of the story. Yes, she screwed up, but no one is perfect. The only thing that matters now is regaining Dominic’s trust and fighting for the man that she wants. It’s not going to be easy. There will be lots of bumps along the way. If Dominic can see the truth, there just might be hope for these two yet….

Seven Nights of Sin was everything that I wanted and then some. The characters sucked me back in to their story and kept my eyes glued to their story. I couldn’t help but devour all the words and finished this book in just a few short hours. I just could not put it down. Dominic and Presley’s story took my emotions on such a wild ride. I was angry. I was frustrated. I wanted to bang my head on the wall. But, in the very next breath, my heart was full. I swooned. My heart ached. I hoped for Dominic and Presley to work through it all and find their way back to one another. Sure, the road to happily ever after was a bumpy one, but I don’t like my romance easy. I like to see the characters go through the paces and fight for what they want. The drama and angst was just right and these two did not disappoint.

At the end of the day, Seven Nights of Sin was the perfect story to spend my day getting lost in. I couldn’t get enough of the emotion, steam and romance. I loved getting lost in these two characters and their story…..
