Review: Hard Wood by Lauren Blakely

Women often say a good man is hard to find. And a hard man is even better.

That’s why I’m quite a catch— good, hard, loaded, and wait for it…I’m ready to settle down too. But the woman I want to pitch my tent with lives clear across the country. Neither of us wants to get lost in those woods. All I have to do is resist her for the week she’s in town.

I try. I swear I try. But yeah, that doesn’t work out.

And after one fantastic night with my good friend Mia, I’m ready to give her years of nights under the stars. What’s a few thousand miles when love’s involved? But there’s a hitch in my plans — she just hired my adventure tour company. If there’s one thing I’m committed to, it’s running a squeaky clean business. Number one on my list of iron-clad rules?

Don’t screw your customers.

But what’s a guy to do when she’s so hard to resist? How hard can it be to keep our hands off each other for a quick group tour down the hills and over the trails? I’m about to find out, and I have a feeling I’m going to need a new badge of honor because things are about to get very hard in the woods.

My Review

“I’m the guy who’s fit, successful, baggage-fucking-free, and–wait for it–ready to settle down. Just call me a four-leaf clover.”

Hard Wood is another terrific romantic comedy from author Lauren Blakely. From the moment you dive into Patrick and Mia’s story you are sucked in. Their story is smartly written and entertaining. The chemistry between Patrick and Mia is just amazing. You can feel the sparks between the two of them no matter how much they try to fight it. From their entertaining banter and innocent flirtations, I couldn’t wait to see how things would play out for the two of them.

One of the things I really loved about this story is how it is written from the male point of view. I loved getting to see the inside of Patrick’s head and I think the author did a brilliant job with it. I also really enjoyed the way that the author incorporated a few chapters from Patrick’s cat Zeus. That’s right. I said it. His cat. Zeus was just as funny and entertaining and will keep you begging for more.

Hard Wood was a totally entertaining read. I loved getting lost in the characters and in the pages of their story. I really enjoyed this story-line and couldn’t have asked for a better friends to lovers romance. The forbidden aspect to the story didn’t hurt either!

I laughed. I swooned. I fell in love. I couldn’t get enough of the will they/won’t they moments and I loved the passion between Patrick and Mia. This book was a lot of fun for me and I enjoyed spending the day with these characters.

My Review

“Her entire face is brighter than a collection of stars on a warm summer night and her smile is as brilliant as the moon itself.”

Eternal was a fun and enjoyable read. I found this story to be very well written and it captivated me. The characters won me over from the very first page. Luci and Landon led complicated lives and had been burned by one form of love or another over the years. The last thing either one of them was looking for was romance. But, as the saying goes, you often find love when you’re not looking for it. And when it comes to Landon and Luci, I couldn’t help but root for these two to find their happily ever after. Yes, their connection was instant and intense, but at the same time, it had a slow burn that just kept you begging for more. The push and pull between the two of them and that undeniable chemistry…Ugh! I just couldn’t get enough. Landon was the absolute best book boyfriend. He was sexy, understanding, hard working, determined and incredibly swoon worthy. And Luci didn’t have one mean bone in her body. She was just the sweetest thing and wanted nothing more than to have the love she’s always wanted. I fell in love with Luci and Landon instantly and their story warmed my heart.

Overall, I thought Eternal was a great read. It checked off all my boxes for a sweet and sexy romance. There was some drama, but not very much. Just a straight forward, make you feel good, warm your heart kind of romance. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is my first book by this author and I can not wait to discover more of her books in the future.

Excerpt

“Babe, do you know where my anti-frizz serum is?”

“Piper, why would I know where that is? I don’t use hair products.”

“Ben.” She sighs. It’s a sweet sigh with a smile as she approaches me. Once her hands wrap around my waist, I mimic her move, tug her to me, and lower my lips to hers. After a few dozen kisses that leave her panting, I pull away and allow her to continue speaking. Instead, Piper stands before me, her eyes closed and her lips lifted to a smirk.

“You had something to say, babe?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. How do you do that?”

“What’s that?” I ask as I walk to the refrigerator and pull out a bottle of water, opening it and quickly finishing half of it off in one gulp.

“Kiss me stupid. I know I had a question, but you do that and I forget my own name.”

“Piper Sullivan.”

“Gosh, I love when you say that.” Piper walks up to me and steals the bottle of water from my hands, taking her own sip before handing it back to me.

“Only seven days. Anyway, you were asking about hair products. I don’t know where any of that is, but if it’s a serum, my sister probably has it. Witchy powers and all that,” I tease.

Piper smacks my arm, which causes me to fake a flinch and turn my back toward her as though I’m protecting myself. “Be nice; that’s my best friend you’re making fun of.”

“Oh, come on. If I can’t make fun of my own sister, what’s the point of having her? Besides, you know she’s been a little on edge lately. More so than usual. Are you sure we should’ve asked her to sing at the wedding?”

Release Blitz with Review: Someone Like You by Brittney Sahin

Title: Someone Like You
Author: Brittney Sahin
Release date: October 12, 2017
(Sub)genre: Contemporary
Buy: Amazon Universal ~ iBooks ~ Nook ~ Google Play ~ Kobo

He was a nameless guy in a bar—a man Grace couldn’t get out of her head…

A week later, she came home to find him sweaty and shirtless with a tape measure in hand, remodeling her loft. As a Parker-King, she’s not allowed to want someone like Noah Dalton. She’s sick of her life, though. Sick of the rules of being a Parker-King. She wants something more, even if it isn’t forever. Somewhere in history there was that one time where hot, no-strings-attached sex didn’t end badly, right? Finding comfort in the arms of a former SEAL is easy, not falling for one . . . not so much.

Noah left the military and moved to New York for one reason: his daughter. Not for some uptight businesswoman—a Manhattan elitist. So when Grace offers him the kind of relationship that no hot-blooded man can turn down, he should say no. And when her seemingly put-together life spins out of control, and his instincts to protect and save kick in, he should turn away. But he doesn’t.

Can two people from different worlds really live in the moment, knowing they’re on borrowed time, or is someone bound to get hurt?

My Review

“Sometimes what’s beneath the surface is worth getting to know.”

Someone Like You was the perfect book to spend the day getting lost in. Someone Like You is fun, entertaining and very well written.

Someone Like You follows the story of Noah and Grace. Noah and Grace couldn’t be more opposite, but you know the saying, opposites attract, and that certainly is the case in this book. When we first meet up with Noah, I was gutted by the things that were happening in his life. My heart ached for the way that Cindy treated him. I wanted to reach through my kindle and knock some sense into this woman. Flash forward to the future, Noah is trying to get used to a “normal” life, but for this SEAL, he is finding that hard to do. He finds himself living in New York to be closer to his daughter and has a new job working with his sister. The last thing he ever planned on was Grace. Grace is the total opposite of him. She’s rich, beautiful and totally out of his league. She should be off-limits, but Noah is powerless to fight the pull….Grace has her own demons she’s trying to battle; from an arranged marriage that she wants nothing to do with, to a vacation in Greece that she’d rather forget. Grace has a lot on her plate and the last thing she ever expected was Noah. Neither of them have much to offer to the other besides sex. Falling for each other isn’t an option, but soon enough the lines will become blurred….

Someone Like You was a really enjoyable read for me. I was pulled into Noah’s story from page one and was instantly hooked. I wanted to why Cindy was behaving the way that she was and I was desperate to know how Noah’s story would play out. Noah was the perfect man. He served in the military to provide for his family and did the best for them that he could. He is sexy, tough, determined and an overall great guy. He is someone you can’t help but want to get to know and be friends with. I think he was a wonderful match for Grace. He brought out things in her that she didn’t know existed. He made her believe in herself, taught her to fight for the things that mattered and gave her the strength to stand up for herself. Together these two made one hell of a team and they certainly burned up the pages together.

Someone Like You is a terrific read from beginning to end. I laughed. I swooned. I got angry. And I fell in love. This story hit all the marks for me and kept me begging for more. This is my first book by this author and I can not wait to read more from her in the future. I definitely recommend checking this book out.

EXCERPT

“I live on a boat at the docks.”

Goose bumps cover my arms at his words. “I hate the water,” I say, without thinking first.

“Really?” He takes a swig of his beer as our eyes connect in the window. “Why?”

“Um.” Why did I have to open my mouth? I don’t tell people this about me. I always use excuses to back out of any plans that involve lakes, rivers, or oceans. I’m not supposed to have weaknesses. I’m a Parker-King.

“You’re afraid of water or…?” He’s giving me the chance to finish, to share, but I hesitate and take a couple of steps back.

“I don’t like the unknown,” I say softly. “I hate not being able to see what lies beneath the surface.”

It’s the truth. A watered-down version of the truth.

“Hmm.” His palm touches the window as his bottle rests against the side of his jeaned thigh. “Sometimes what’s beneath the surface is worth getting to know.”

I stare out the window and off into the distance. The moon falls like a soft glow over the city—and I’d almost swear the light finds him too.

“But sometimes what’s beneath the surface is ugly,” he adds in a deep voice, emotion threading his words.

It’s hard for me to believe this tough guy has been hurt before, but there’s a definite pain there, and I don’t think it’s from his time in the military.

“Do you think it’s worth the risk, though?”

Noah takes a drink and turns to face me. “Sometimes.”

He angles his head and closes the small gap between us.

I feel awkward. I don’t know what to do with my hands or how to stand. These aren’t feelings I’m accustomed to. I’m self-assured and confident.

Except that when my life flashed before my eyes in that hotel in Athens, I realized I don’t have a damn clue who I am, only who I’ve been pretending to be for twenty-nine years.

“Were you a Marine?” I need to change the topic. I barely know this man, and somehow I think we just drifted into deep territory that neither of us was prepared for.

Noah scrubs a hand down his jaw. We’re standing in front of each other like two teenagers waiting for the other to make the first move. But that’s ridiculous, because we don’t know each other, and whatever I’m feeling for this guy is purely physical. And maybe he doesn’t even have any interest in me. Maybe he wasn’t lying when he said I wasn’t his type.

“I was a SEAL,” he says at last.

“Really?” A grin sneaks up on me. “You guys are kind of badass, or so I hear.”

His mouth broadens into a deep smile. “Only kind of?”

Part of me wants to slip my hands up his chest because that feels like the natural thing to do.

There’s this tight band of tension between us, and I take a breath and release it as I wait for that tension to snap.

Is he going to kiss me?

His eyes are on my lips, and I instinctively wet them. The muscles in my stomach tighten as I find my gaze steadying on his mouth. The dark scruff around his lips—he has that sexy kind of dangerous look…but I can tell this man is only dangerous because he’s forbidden.

Release Blitz: Unintended by Georgia Cates

The Fellowship saga continues with Kieran and Westlyn’s story in this standalone spinoff of The Sin Trilogy.

Captor becomes lover…

I’m a marksman. Mobster. Deadly assassin.
My job is to protect my brotherhood, but that isn’t my only responsibility.

I’m Kieran Hendry, the up-and-coming leader of The Order, and a new duty calls. I must take a wife.

A wife I don’t know.
A wife born into a position at the top of The Fellowship hierarchy.
A wife who will forge a strong alliance between her brotherhood and mine.
A wife I don’t want.

I knew next to nothing about Westlyn Breckenridge when I abducted her, but I quickly discover that she’s intelligent, strong, defiant, selfless. And beautiful.

One night with her is all it takes for me to see that she is no typical Mafia princess. I’m hopeful this arranged marriage won’t be the miserable union I imagined it to be. But convincing my intended to give us a chance won’t be easy when she sees me as the enemy. The brute who kidnapped her. The vile fiend who threatened to do as he wished with her body.

It’s true. I am all those things. I had cruel intentions. But everything has changed. My affection for her is unexpected. My love, unintended.

***Unintended can be read as a standalone novel although it is a novel accompanying The Sin Trilogy. It is best enjoyed after reading The Sin Trilogy and Endurance: A Sin Series Standalone novel.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Kieran’s POV

Kieran dropped me off six hours ago. I’m certain that whatever happened with The Order members has gone down. And I don’t know if he’s dead or alive.

I’m losing my mind with worry for him.

I’m losing my mind with lust for him.

I know it’s irrational, and I don’t understand how it’s possible, but I miss Kieran. I want to be with him. I want him beside me. But those aren’t the only irrational feelings I’m having.

Kieran stole me… and I liked it.

He told me I was beautiful… and I liked it.

He took my virginity… and I liked it. A lot.

He calls me wife… and I love it.

Captor becomes intended becomes lover becomes husband. Something is very wrong with that picture. And something is very wrong with me for being okay with it.

Maybe I’m just fucked up in the head from being raised by a monster for a father. A stupid woman who’s desperate for love and affection from a man, and he’s the first to show me any.

Maybe I’m dick-obssessed. Because I damn sure can’t stop thinking about Kieran’s and when I’m going to get it inside me again.

Maybe I have Stockholm syndrome. Captive falls in love with her captor. He steals the woman, but in the process, he also steals her heart. That’s a thing. Perhaps a mental disorder, but still a thing.

Doesn’t matter what kind of fucked-up label you put on me, I want him.

I pick up my phone and scroll through my favorites list. Kieran placed his contact at the top. And I love that he labeled himself as My Intended. It’s sweet.

Coming Soon: Ripples by Aleatha Romig

ARE YOU READY FOR MORE TONY RAWLINGS? RIPPLES IS COMING ON OCTOBER 31!

You don’t have to read the Consequences series to enjoy this stand-alone novel, but if you know Tony Rawlings, you know that disappointing him isn’t an option. Imagine being his youngest daughter…imagine telling him the unimaginable…

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.”

Sometimes ideas find you, and dreams begin as nightmares. Sometimes the truth that has been kept hidden is the key to opening a door you never knew existed.

“You might not know me. I’m the baby of the Rawlings family, the princess, the daughter who came along later. I’m not like my older siblings, successful at everything they touch. My mother and father have provided me with every luxury as well as their unyielding love and support, but I’m not spoiled. I’m also not content. By example, my parents have shown me how love should be. I don’t know their past, and that doesn’t matter. I know what I’ve seen—two people devoted to one another.

I don’t believe that I’ll ever find that kind of love, the kind that forgives and accepts all. And as my life falls to pieces and I travel to visit my family to face their disappointment, I’m not even looking for it.

I’m looking for an escape…from my life as a Rawlings…from the pressure to achieve and not let others down. I dream of the time I can live for my own desires without the expectations that come with my name.

I don’t find what I’m seeking…it finds me. Or should I say…he finds me.

This time is different. I have a family who will search for me and find the answers. Little do we know—any of us—that my father set my journey into motion long before I was born.”

“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” ~Dalai Lama

Ripples (Unabridged Version) is Natalie’s story, the youngest of Tony and Claire’s children—their baby. This story first appeared in shorter form in Glamour: Contemporary Fairytale Retellings. Due to the length restriction of each novella in that anthology, many scenes in Ripples were shortened or omitted for that anthology. This unabridged edition is the entire story—double in length and—a full-length novel.

Please enjoy this Consequences novel along with special appearances from your favorite Consequences characters.

A Little Too Late by Staci Hart

Publishing Date: October 24th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with the nanny.

When my wife left, she took the illusion of happiness with her, and I’ve been caught in a free fall ever since. For nine long months, I’ve been fighting to figure out how to be a single dad, how to be alone.

For nine long months, I’ve been failing.

When Hannah walked through the door, I took my first breath since I’d found myself on my own. She slipped into our lives effortlessly, showing me what I’ve been missing all these years. Because Hannah made me smile when I thought I’d packed the notion of happiness away with my wedding album.

She was only supposed to be the nanny, but she’s so much more.

The day my wife left should have been the worst day of my life, but it wasn’t. It was when Hannah walked away, taking my heart with her.

Excerpt:

Hannah

The first time I saw Charlie Parker, I didn’t see one thing at a time; I saw all of him. It was an assault on my senses, an overwhelming tide of awareness, and for a moment, the details came to me in flashes over what was probably only a few seconds but felt so much longer.

His hair was blond and gently mussed, his face long and nose elegant. I could smell him, clean and fresh with just a touch of spice I couldn’t place. I tipped my chin up—he was tall, taller than me, and I hovered just at six feet—and met his eyes, earthy and brown and so deep. So very deep.

And then he smiled.

He was handsome when he wasn’t smiling. He was stunning when he was.

I was so lost in that smile, I didn’t register the flying gob until it whapped against my sweater. Tiny splatters of something cold speckled my neck.

This was the moment the clock started again, and the sweet serenity slipped directly into chaos.

A blond little boy looked up at me from his father’s side with a devilish gleam in his dark eyes. The spoon in his hand was covered in blood-red jam and aimed at me like an empty catapult.

Several things happened at once. Charlie’s face morphed into embarrassed frustration as he reached for who I presumed to be his son. The boy—Sam, I guessed from the names I’d been given by the agency—spun around lightning fast and took off down the hallway, giggling. Another child began to cry from somewhere back in the house, and a bowl clattered to the ground, followed by a hissed swear from what sounded like an older woman.

I glanced down at the sliding, sticky mess against my white sweater and started to laugh.

Charlie’s head swiveled back to me, his face first colored with confusion, then in horror as he looked at the Pollock painting on my sweater.

“Oh my God,” he breathed, his apologetic, wide eyes dragging down my body. “Jesus, I am so sorry.”

I was still laughing, almost a little hysterical. I couldn’t even tell you why.

I waved a hand at Charlie, and he took my elbow, guiding me into the house as I caught my breath. Another crash came from the kitchen, and a little girl came toddling out into the entry, leaving powdery footprints on the hardwood.

Charlie’s face screwed up. “Sam!” he called, stretching the word, a drawn-out promise of consequences.

A riot of giggling broke out in the kitchen.

We both snapped into motion. I followed him as he scooped up his crying daughter and stormed toward the kitchen. The little girl watched me over his shoulder with big brown eyes, her breath hitching in little shudders and her small finger hooked in her mouth.

Charlie stopped so abruptly, I almost ran into him.

When I looked around him and into the kitchen, my mouth opened. I covered it with my fingers as laughter bubbled up my throat.

A bag of flour sat in the middle of the floor, the white powder thrown in bursts against the surrounding surfaces and hanging in the air like smoke. The floor next to the bag was the only clean spot, shaped like a small bottom—the little girl’s, I supposed. A bowl lay upside down, its contents oozing from under the rim and slung in a ring from ceiling to cabinet to floor, as if it had completed a masterful flip on its way to its demise. And in the center of the madness stood an older woman with flour in her dark hair and dusted down the front of her. Clutched under her arm was a wriggling Sam, offending spoon still in hand.

Her face was kind but tight with exasperation. “Please tell me this is the new nanny,” she said flatly.

“I doubt we could convince her to stay at this point,” he said with equal flatness.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
