Review: The Risk (Briar U #2) by Elle Kennedy

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy. THE RISK takes you back to the world of hot hockey players, feisty heroines, bro banter, and steamy scenes…

Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.

And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.

I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.

For every fake date…he wants a real one.

Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.

That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.

MY REVIEW

What can I say?! This book was a lot of fun. Ever since I finished The Chase, I’ve been dying to get my hands on the next Briar U story and man was it worth the wait. This book hit all the marks that I was looking for in a sports romance. We’ve got hotter than hot hockey players, amazing chemistry, a fun story-line filled with lots of heart and characters that just leave you begging for more. The Risk was all that and a bag of chips and was totally worth waiting for.

The Risk is the second book in the Briar U Series and it follows the story of Brenna and Jake. Brenna is one tough chick–damsel in distress she is not. Not only is Brenna a force to be reckoned with but she knows her hockey and she is hot stuff. Brenna is far from perfect, but has worked hard to make positive changes in her life. The last thing Brenna needs is Jake messing up her life and telling her what to do….Jake plays for the rival hockey team and let me tell you, he is all of that and then some. He’s arrogant and has ever right to be that way. And while Brenna can’t stand Jake, fate has other plans for these two. They are constantly put in each others paths and their chemistry is off the charts, undeniable. For the first time, Jake wants more than the status quo, if only he can get Brenna on board. The road to happily ever after for Brenna and Jake won’t be an easy one. Loyalties will be tested and the stakes will be higher than ever. If you want to see how Jake & Brenna’s story plays out, grab your copy of The Risk today!

Bottom line, The Risk was a ton of fun. The characters hooked me instantly and I’ve gotta say, I really enjoyed watching their story play out. I loved that their schools were rivals, so it added a bit of a forbidden flare to it. I loved the give and take between Brenna & Jake. Their chemistry was scorching hot and their banter was a total riot. I never knew what they were gonna say or what was going to happen next between these two. I loved that they kept me on my toes and that their relationship held such a realness to it. Both characters having to take a risk on one another. Whether it be because of a painful past or because they weren’t ready for the distractions a real relationship would bring. I loved watching these two go through the motions, watching them fall in love and fall apart, watching them decide if what they had was worth the risk or if it was time to let go. The Risk put my emotions through the ringer and I loved every single second of it. It had just the right amount of angst, drama, sexy good times and humor.

If you’re looking for a fun and sexy sports romance that’s filled with a lot of heart, then look no further. Give The Risk a try. I hope you’ll fall in love with these characters and their story just as I have.

ABBI SYNOPSIS

Summer had returned to the coastal town of Sea Breeze, Alabama. The nightlife lit up with scantily clad sun-kissed bodies, live music, the smell of freshly cooked seafood.
Taking it all in he wondered if coming back had been the best thing. He wasn’t the same man who had driven out of town a year ago on the motorcycle he’d spontaneously bought after his best friend’s wedding. From the messy blond curls he’d let grow out to the tattoos now covering his arms, part of his chest and even the side of his neck, it all represented a part of his journey.

Eli Hardy was back, but he didn’t plan on staying for long.

Throwback Thursday: Nowhere But Here by Renee Carlino

“I loved you before you existed, and I’ll love you after I’m gone.”

“To exist in each other’s souls so strongly that you are bound without a physical tie is the greatest mark of love…”

“I don’t know what I’ll do if I fall in love with him.” “If you fall, let him catch you.”

“Love is a thing that you can’t take out of you. Once it’s there, it doesn’t go away, no matter what. Love can morph into hate and resentment, but it will always be there, buried under the bad feelings.”

“I’ve been looking for the same thing most of us are looking for.” “What’s that?” “Someone to come home to.”

“Leave your life. Leave everyone you love, every care, every stress, every commitment. Live alone. Understand what it feels like to know that if you go into cardiac arrest, choke on a piece of hot dog, or get electrocuted, no one will find you. You’ll rot. No one will mourn you. Imagine this feeling haunting your thoughts for the rest of your life. You’ll wither and vanish, and some stranger will take care of your things and your burial, and you may not even get a placard. Imagine that, live it, and let yourself believe that you should be alone, and then go back to the people who love you.”

“Whispers, that’s what she calls them. They’re signs, small sounds, or little reminders, letting you know that there’s something bigger than us out there. That there’s a force working hard to make things right in the universe.”

“I can still smell you on my pillow. I can still see you standing in my room, the light caressing your smooth legs, your dark hair cascading over your shoulders, and your gorgeous mouth smiling so effortlessly. I miss you. I ache for you, and I’m bordering on crazy without you. Come back to me.”

A Chicago reporter in her mid-twenties unexpectedly finds love in Napa Valley when she’s assigned to spend a week with a famously reclusive genius.

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. From the outside, her life seems charmed. She has a handsome, long-term boyfriend and a budding journalism career at a popular Chicago newspaper. But in reality, her relationship is going nowhere, and she’s quickly losing motivation for what she once believed was her dream job. When her boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously, Kate loses all hope of finding love.

With no living family and few friends, Kate confides in her boss. Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, he gives Kate the opportunity to jumpstart her career. The assignment: to interview the famously reclusive R.J. Lawson, a wealthy tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as a Napa Valley vintner. The week takes an unexpected turn, however, when Lawson refuses to divulge any information. Desperate for a lead, Kate turns to Jamie, a vineyard hand who shows her the romance of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. But his connection to Lawson is ambiguous, and when Jamie disappears before the end of the week, Kate is left to investigate another story: the truth behind the man who stole her heart.

USA TODAY bestselling author Renée Carlino explored love and heartbreak in her beautifully written debut Sweet Thing, and her newest novel does not disappoint. For fans of Colleen Hoover, K.A. Tucker, and Katja Millay, Nowhere But Here is a stirring and satisfying romance that you won’t want to put down.

MY REVIEW

“Fate is nothing more than another word for happiness. We’re more than fate. We sound like something undeniable–Romeo and Juliet, Johnny and June, Beyonce and Jay Z…Henna and Bodhi.”

“I’m not living. You told me to live. I’m dying. I’ve been dying every day since the accident.” Except for Bohdi. With Bohdi, I live. I breathe. I dream. I imagine. I’m limitless with him.”

“The Law of Henna and Bohdi: When love breaks, fall inward, fall together, and fall hard. Then let time pick up the pieces.”

“Love is not a rational emotion. It jumps out of planes and dives off cliffs. It leaves a permanent mark on everything it touches.”

“I want him to want me. Like the epic kind of love where he comes for me. The kind where he doesn’t take no for an answer. The kind that involves begging and groveling. I want him to chase me. Need me. I want him to hold me in his arms the way I’ve held him in my heart.”

A Place Without You was one of my most anticipated reads and let me tell you it does not disappoint! I mean, what a way to kick off 2019, than with a book that totally knocks your socks off and takes your heart for one heck of a ride. This book was everything and then some. It was more than I ever anticipated and gave me more feels than my poor heart can possibly handle.

A Place Without You is an epic and unforgettable love story. It is a story of young love and discovery. It is a story of pain and heartache. It is life changing and consuming. The writing is addictive and will leave you hanging on every word. So much heart and emotion went into this story, you can literally feel the emotions bursting from the pages. For me, A Place Without You is the kind of story you want to devour, yet find yourself wanting to savor every last word so that the story doesn’t have to end.

Bodhi and Henna are unlike any characters I’ve ever met. Their connection was instant, yet filled with such ease. They were truly like magnets. A force to be reckoned with. They were destined to be in each other lives, no matter what life threw at them. I picture Henna as this young bohemian girl, with her whole life ahead of her. Just living in the moment and unafraid to take chances. She was the definition of free. She was everything the Bodhi needed, but felt like he didn’t deserve. You see, Bodhi made a lot of mistakes in his life and let his guilt dictate his every move. Being with Henna was like a dream come true. A chance at happiness and love. Henna saved Bodhi even when he didn’t know he needed saving.

The road to HEA wasn’t an easy one at all for these two characters. Life threw a lot of obstacles their way, giving them an unforgettable love and then snatching it away. Their love was forbidden, Yet it was real and pure. It was beautiful and heartbreaking. It was the kind of love everyone wants and that is worth fighting for. So, yeah, their relationship wasn’t easy, but for me, it was so worth the journey.

A Place Without You is the story I never saw coming. It just consumed me and I wanted to live within the pages of Bodhi & Henna’s story. These characters are so real, so raw, so complicated and so beautifully broken. Their story is angsty. It’s romantic. It’s just everything. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll get angry. You’ll swoon one minute and have your heart broken the next. I found myself highlighting so many passages so I wouldn’t forget a single moment. Bodhi and Henna’s story took me on the most amazing journey and I know their story will be staying with for a very long time.

To sum it up, A Place Without You is everything. It’s beautiful. It’s painful. It’s a story of loss, pain and forgiveness. It’s a story of finding yourself and living the life you were always meant to have. It’s a story of first love and first everything. It’s a story of risks and chances. A story of epic and unforgettable love…..

Excerpt:

“Let’s eat before we leave. I’m sure there’s quite the spread downstairs.”

“Rich people breakfast?” I ask.

She furrows a brow for a few seconds. “Yes. I suppose so.” Rolling away, she swings her legs around and stands up, stretching like a cat.

“Do you eat rich people breakfast every morning?” My curiosity has been piqued.

After a long yawn, she cocks her head to the side, lips slightly twisted. “Shredded Wheat with cut-up banana and almond milk. Is that a rich person’s breakfast?”

I sit up, doing a bit of my own stretching, loving the way her gaze roams along my bare chest, her lips parting ever so slightly. “No. I think that’s a solid middle-class breakfast.”

“Middle. That’s average. Average is good, right?”

“There’s nothing average about you, Henna.” I stand, following her into the bedroom.

“I’m going to shower quickly, and by quickly I mean I need an hour. Do you have an hour?”

“To shower with you?” I try to play it cool, like I’m serious.

I’m a little serious.

The color leaves her face. “Oh, um …” She twists her fingers together, drawing her shoulders inward.

“I’m kidding.”

A little kidding.

Henna’s posture relaxes as her cheeks pink up again. “We could.” Her gaze darts around the room before landing on mine for two seconds only to wander around the room again.

“My clothes are at my hotel. I’ll shower there. I need to get going.”

A slow sigh deflates her chest as she tries on a smile that misses the confident mark by a few centimeters. “Okay.”

“But thanks for the offer.” I wink.

More color paints her cheeks, and it looks stunning on her. “I kinda sorta thought we’d have sex last night, but we didn’t, and that’s fine, but now I don’t know what comes next.”

Does that make me the world’s biggest idiot for not taking what she was planning on offering? Or does that make me a gentleman? I’ve already fucked her a hundred different ways in my head, so I’m going to shy away from the gentleman label.

“How about you put my number in your phone and I’ll call you later today? That feels like a good next, don’t you think?”

Henna nods and turns, walking toward the bedroom door. Digging through her purse, she retrieves her phone. When she pulls it out, a string of three condoms comes out with it. “Oh jeez.” Quickly snatching them off the floor, she shoves them back into her purse.

I don’t respond because I’m not sure what the correct response should be.

“I was conceived at Coachella.” She hands me her phone with the contact screen open, ready for my information.

Taking her phone, I give her an expectant look, but she withholds all elaboration.

“And by conceived, you mean physical conception, not merely an idea kind of conception?” I hand her phone back and give her mine.

“In the shadows behind a stage. I know more details than most people should actually know about the moment they were conceived.” She lifts a shoulder in a small shrug. “But Juni is my best friend. She’s the absolute coolest mom ever, and the story of how she met my dad is my favorite story ever.”

I nod as she keeps her chin tipped toward the screen to my phone. “Why is that?” I take my phone back when she holds it out to me.

“Yin Yang. Opposites. Laws of the universe.” She wears a satisfied smile. “My parents were temporary. I was permanent.” Holding out her arms, she inspects her henna tattoos as if seeing them for the first time. “My mom had henna tattoos on her body when she met my dad. Henna grows in intensity over a few days before fading to nothing. It’s magical and beautiful and then it’s gone. My parents say that about their love for each other. It grew quickly into something deep and intense, but over time it faded. Their love—like most everything in life—was temporary.”

“We’re temporary.”

Her empty stare shifts to meet my gaze and she nods. “Don’t sweat it. Everything is temporary. But today…” she walks into my chest, and my arms wrap around her as she looks up at me “…we should be at our brightest, our most intense.”
