Wicked Fall (The Wicked Horse Series Book #1)
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: July 28, 2015

Synopsis:

Never in your wildest dreams could you begin to imagine all the filthy and depraved things that go on inside The Wicked Horse. Step inside and Woolf Jennings will make every one of your dirty fantasies come true.

He’s covered in a facade of deception. An enticing blend of multi-millionaire and hot-as-hell Wyoming rancher, those that think they know Woolf Jennings admire his abilities to preside as CEO of his family’s cattle and oil empire. But only a privileged few truly understand what fuels the glitter of depravity in those gorgeous blue eyes. Only a few know he’s opened up a sinfully erotic and private sex club named The Wicked Horse right at the base of the beautiful Teton Mountain range.

Sweet Callie Hayes has returned home to Wyoming and is looking forward to starting her life over again. After a night of impetuosity, she’s managed to put herself right in Woolf’s line of sight… the man who she foolishly offered up her virginity to years ago and was flatly turned down.

Now Woolf is seeing that Callie is all grown up and has a kinky side to her that leaves him as confused as it does turned on. Worse yet, both Callie’s dirty desires and sweet heart are getting under his skin, and making Woolf question everything he’s ever believed about himself.

My Review

Hold on to your hats ladies, this book will take you on one very HOT ride!! Sawyer Bennett has really knocked it out of the park with this one. Wicked Fall is HOT, sexy, naughty and down right entertaining. If you’ve read Shaken, Not Stirred, then you will remember that we briefly met Wolfe Jennings. He is the brother of Tenn and this is his story….

Wolfe is a rancher by day and at night, he makes your wildest dreams and fantasies come true. See, Wolfe is one of the owners of The Wicked Horse. The Wicked Horse is a dream that both Wolfe and his college buddy had and Wolfe has made their dream come true. Their company isn’t for everyone and only the ones who can pay the hefty price can know what goes on at the silo at The Wicked Horse. Wolfe thought he had everything under control and that he was living the dream until Callie blew back into town. Callie was the one who got away. Wolfe has been in love with Callie for as long as he can remember, but never thought he was good enough for her. And now that Callie is back, she’s got him thinking of things that he thought he’d never want….Callie has come back home looking for a fresh start. She is recently broken up with her cheating fiancee and is looking for a change. The last thing she was anticipating was running into Wolfe again. What will happen when these two reunite? Will Wolfe take a chance on Callie or will he be dumb enough to let her get away again?

I am just going to keep my review short and sweet. Wicked Fall is one scorching hot read. Sawyer Bennett really kicked up the sexy and steam factor with this one and I loved it. Wicked Fall was fun and entertaining. You know the phrase what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas? Well, in Wicked Fall, it should be What Happens at the Silo, stays at the Silo.

I was hooked on the characters and the story from the very first page. I found the story-line to be so intriguing, I had to know more. And the more I read, the more I couldn’t put it down. Sawyer Bennett does not disappoint in this one. This book is dirty, sexy, naughty and a whole lot of fun! Wicked Fall is the first book in The Wicked Horse Series and let me tell you, this series is off one heck of a scorching start. I can not wait to see where Sawyer Bennett will take us next!

About EASY WITH YOU:

Nothing has ever come easy for Lila Bailey. She’s fought for every good thing in her life during every day of her thirty-one years. Aside from that one night with an impossible to deny stranger a year ago, Lila is the epitome of responsible.

Steadfast. Strong.

She’s pulled herself out of the train wreck of her childhood, proud to be a professor at Tulane University and laying down roots in a city she’s grown to love. But when some of her female students are viciously murdered, Lila’s shaken to the core and unsure of whom she can trust in New Orleans. When the police detective assigned to the murder case comes to investigate, she’s even more surprised to find herself staring into the eyes of the man that made her toes curl last year.

In an attempt to move on from the tragic loss of his wife, Asher Smith moved his daughter and himself to a new city, ready for a fresh start. A damn fine police lieutenant, but new to the New Orleans force, Asher has a lot to prove to his colleagues and himself.

With a murderer terrorizing the Tulane University campus, Asher finds himself toe-to-toe with the one woman that haunts his dreams. His hands, his lips, his body know her as intimately as he’s ever known anyone. As he learns her mind and heart as well, Asher wants nothing more than to keep her safe, in his bed, and in his and his daughter’s lives for the long haul.

But when Lila becomes the target, can Asher save her in time, or will he lose another woman he loves?

A Message from Kristen Proby:

Dear readers,

As you know, the With Me In Seattle series came to a close earlier this month with the eighth and final installment, FOREVER WITH ME. I’ve been steadfast in my decision that there would be no further stories from the series, no spin-offs, nothing more. In my mind, it was complete.

And I still feel that the Montgomery/Williams families are complete, and I maintain that I’m happy with their happy-ever-afters.

But, I’ve also heard you when you’ve said that Asher, Matt Montgomery’s partner in TIED WITH ME, deserves to have a happily ever after for himself and his daughter Casey. So, when the lovely ladies from 1001 Dark Nights asked me to participate in their wonderful project, I thought long and hard about whose story it should be about. Seattle is finished, and I’ve moved on to New Orleans for the new Boudreaux Series… And then it occurred to me: why not do both, and offer a companion novella to each of the series?

And so, because you, the reader, has been so insistent that you want to see Asher and Casey find their perfect person, I’m excited to introduce you to EASY WITH YOU. I think you’re going to love Asher and Lila’s love story this spring…

Happy Reading,

Kristen Proby

My Review

Easy With You was a quick and exciting read. This story was quite the departure from the normal Kristen Proby reads.

Easy With You follows the story of Lila and Asher. Lila and Asher have a chance meeting on a plane where she accidentally falls in his lap. Later, as fate would have it, they once again bump into one another and wind up spending one unforgettable night together. Almost a year has passed and the two of them will once again find themselves together. Lila is a professor at a university where girls are suddenly being murdered. And who should find himself on the case? Of course, Asher. Asher will do anything to protect Lila, but this situation is coming a little too close to home. Will Asher be able to keep Lila safe??

I have to say, I really enjoyed this book. It was quite different from what we normally see from Kristen Proby and I think it worked really well. This story was fast paced, had a really intriguing plot and kept me captivated the entire time. I loved the mystery and suspense that surrounded the story. I had a few guesses as to who I thought the killer was and I really enjoyed putting all the pieces together.

I loved that this book did a With Me In Seattle and Easy Love crossover. I haven’t had the chance to read Easy Love yet, but now, I’m looking forward to jumping into that one. Overall, I really enjoyed this read. It gave me the romance and steam that I’ve come to know and love from Kristen Proby, with some great mystery and suspense added to it. Fans of Kristen Proby will not be disappointed!

 Excerpt

She’s so fucking sexy I can hardly breathe.

“I want to fuck you, Lila.”

“Oh good.” She swallows. “We’re on the same page. I want to fuck you too.”

“No, sweetheart.” I grin and lower my face beside hers. I’m not touching her, but I can feel her. Our skin is almost touching, and I know I’m making her crazy.

I’m making me fucking crazy.

“I’m going to fuck you.” I drag my nose along her earlobe and grin when she shivers. “But first, I think we could use something to cool us off.”

“Cool us off?” she whispers.

Without touching her, I back away, take her hand and walk to the small wet bar in my room, open a bottle of Patrón that one of the guys at the precinct gave me, slice a lime and reach for the salt shaker sitting on my room service tray from lunch, relieved that I forgot to set it in the hallway on my way out this afternoon.

“Have you ever done body shots?” I ask her. She’s watching me closely, her hip leaning against the counter, arms crossed over her chest.

“No.” She shakes her head and bites her lip.

“Wanna do them with me?”

“Yes.”

“I’ll go first.” I pull her to me, her stomach against my pelvis, and push her hair over her shoulder. “Tip your head back, please.”

She complies, and I lick a short path down the side of her neck, making her breath catch. God, she’s so damn responsive. I shake a little salt on the wet spot, then lick it clean, take the shot, and suck on the lime.

Her eyes never leave me. I love that she’s not shy.

Book Review – Maybe by Amber L. Johnson

Posted on

I am always keen on an ARC of an Amber L. Johnson book. Keen as a bean. Amber L. Johnson has a knack for writing characters that I LOVE. Always different, always interesting, you won’t find any same/same in any of her books. Maybe was told in true ALJ style – original, engaging, heart melting.

Letting go is hard. Admitting you need each other is harder.

Emily Portman loves her job. A writer for Breakout! Magazine, she shadows and showcases up-and-coming bands. When her next assignment takes her to Austin, Texas, she can’t wait to add the city to her map of places she’s visited. Places she’s left without looking back. Her plan is to keep moving on, and the last thing she needs is a man holding her back. She’s not going down that road again.

Tyler Macy is stuck in a rut. Despite his exceptional talent as a musician, he has chosen to take a back seat with his music and let others grab the limelight. Wounded and mistrustful, he doesn’t appreciate his friends’ efforts to bring him back to center stage. Emily comes onto the scene and sees his full potential, but he fights to stay in the shadows, shutting her out before she can add to the scars another woman gave him.

For Tyler to find his music again, he needs to accept the help that Emily and their friends offer. When he discovers that his muse lies underneath Emily’s skin, it is still not enough to keep her from walking away. Neither will admit what they really want until it is too late.

Emily is once again thrown in Tyler’s path when she is assigned to join them on tour. Despite the pain in his past, Tyler sees that she is worth it, even if she’s stolen both his heart and peace of mind. In order for them to be together, they both must discover whether the music and their passion are enough to overcome the obstacles that separate them.

Maybe finding love is worth the risk.

Maybe is a little different to the other books I have read by Amber L. Johnson, but the common theme among theme is a very sweet, very real love. Her stories tend to be low on angst and high on quality content. All too often it’s easy to get so caught up in the angst between two character that their real story and true personalities get lost amongst the drama. This is not the case at all in Maybe. Both characters had depth and charisma that kept the reader fully engaged in their story. However, I loved Emily and Tyler so much I wouldn’t have minded having a little more back story on them, and on Emily in particular. I felt like there was room to get to know her just a little more.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to say that Maybe took me a little longer than usual to get into BUT it’s entirely possible (and, in fact, probable) that this was a ‘me’ thing and not an ‘it’ thing. Once my full attention was captured there was no putting this book down.

Once again Amber L. Johnson has proved herself to be one of my favorites. BOOM! Bring on the next ALJ .book!

Book Review – Nocte by Courtney Cole

Posted on

Save me and I’ll save you…

My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole.
My other half– my twin brother, my Finn– is crazy.

I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me.

I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline.

Dare DuBray.

He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me.

He has the power to destroy me.

Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt.

Why? Because of a secret.

A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming.

You won’t either

Our Review

None of us here at Once Upon a Book Blog knew what to expect when we began reading Nocte. We all went in totally blind, not reading any spoilers or having a clue what we were getting ourselves into.  And honestly, that is the way to go into it, completely clueless. The blurb itself doesn’t give a single thing away but still manages to be utterly attention grabbing, inducing within a burning NEED to read this book as soon as possible. And WHOA, what a book. Beautifully written, totally captivating, and completely spellbinding, Nocte solely held all of our attentions from the start. Even now, nearly twenty four hours after we finished reading this book, we are still finding ourselves discussing theories and contemplating what’s to come next.

Amy– For me, this is one of those books that I am so glad I had someone to talk to and freak out with as I was reading. When I first started reading Nocte, I had no idea what to expect. I knew from the synopsis, that it was going to be one crazy ride. I found myself completely captivated by what I was reading. There was so much mystery and suspense with little bread crumbs of answers dropped along the way. Nocte is definitely one of those stories that will have you questioning everything that you are reading and then when you finally get some answers, you are completely blown away. If the twists and turns weren’t enough to scramble your mind, you were left with one brutal cliffhanger. One that won’t let me stop thinking about this book and anticipating the answers that lie ahead in the next story……

Charmaine- This is a book best read with a buddy or two. Trust me when I say that you’re going to need someone to be hysterical with more than once! From the very first page of the prologue I was completely and utterly lost to the story. There was no chance at me spinning this book out, I needed to finish it… I had to know what was going on. My brain wouldn’t stop working until I did! What I didn’t realise was that at the end I was going to be left bereft of a conclusion, because although there were some answers, it turned out that there was nothing neatly packaged about this ending. There is a question that 2 days on I am still wracking my brain to piece together. If ever a book is both enthralling and torturous at the same time then this is it. Well executed, skilfully written and fascinating to read, I am absolutely hooked…

Kristal – I think I almost lost my mind within the pages of this story. I’m not joking. I was frantically flipping pages and my thought process throughout can only be described as ‘frenzied’. I’d almost feel sorry for Charmaine and Amy (who were on the receiving end of my madness), if we weren’t all in the same boat. The burning need to KNOW, the trickery within the pages, and the perfectly compelling tale being told, all contributed to me being unable to function for an entire day while I devoured this book. And that ending…oh my god, that ending. Is it February yet???

Book Review: Mine To Have by Cynthia Eden

Is he a hero…or the villain?

When Elizabeth Ward sees Saxon Black rushing into the backroom of The Blade—a low end bar in Miami—she isn’t sure if he’s there to save the day…or just to raise some hell. But she’s being held hostage, and he’s her best hope of survival. Within minutes, she’s away from the jerks with the guns and riding fast and hard on the back of Saxon’s motorcycle.

Death stalks them.

Saxon has been working undercover for far too long. When he finds sexy Elizabeth—with a gun to her head—he knows he will do anything to keep her safe. But once he gets her away from her abductors, the threat to her isn’t over. Someone has put a price on Elizabeth’s head, and if Saxon can’t keep her safe from the danger stalking her, then she’ll be dead.

Their lives are both on the line.

As their enemies close in, Elizabeth and Saxon must go on the run. And the longer they are together, the hotter their attraction for one another seems to burn. Saxon vows not to let anyone hurt her, no matter what he has to do, because he’s falling fast for Elizabeth. He’ll stop the killers on her trail, and then he’ll have her. Forever.

My Review

This is my first book by Cynthia Eden and it won’t be my last. I’m always a little apprehensive when a series can be read as a stand-alone, but I’m starting at the most recent book. However, I quickly found that I had no reason for worrying. I was not lost at all.

Mine To Have takes you on one heck of a roller-coaster ride. The book starts off with a bang and the pace never really slows down. This book had a lot of suspense, action, and intrigue. It kept me on the edge, wondering what was going to happen next. And just when I thought I had it all figured out and knew who the bad guys were, another twist was thrown at me. And boy were those twists good.

I loved the chemistry between Saxton and Elizabeth. I knew from the moment they met, that things were going to get crazy-in the best way possible. Their chemistry was HOT and could not be ignored. Their relationship was definitely not an easy one and they had to endure a lot more than the typical couple. You know that phrase “Whatever doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.” Well that is totally fitting for them.

I really enjoyed Mine To Have. If you are looking for a fast paced, suspenseful, steamy romance, then look no further. I’m looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in this series!

Book Review – Eight Days a Week by Amber L. Johnson

Posted on

Once again Amber L Johnson has managed to write a vibrant and engaging story filled with colorful characters. Eight Days a Week is a very different book to Puddle Jumping (my other favorite ALJ read) but I was still captivated by this story and hated having to put it down in order to deal with real life (AKA my children).

Eight Days a Week is about Andrew Lyons and Gwen Stone. Andrew is a (hot) directionless twenty-something, who needs to get a job (and a life) and get out of his sisters apartment as soon as possible. Gwen is the working mother of two children and finds herself in a bind childcare wise. Flustered by her current predicament, she hires Drew on a whim and shenanigans ensue. As attraction between Drew and Gwen grows, so do the secrets between them and an emotional disaster is inevitable.

Eight Days a Week is solely told from Drew’s point of view, which made for a refreshing and exciting change. I LOVE when a male point of view is done well and this was done extremely well. Drew’s personality shone out of the pages on this story and there was none of the same-same feeling I often get while reading a male POV. It was chock full of humor, and the predicaments Drew found himself in while learning the ways of the ‘manny’ had me laughing out loud more than once. Things that mothers don’t even think twice about can be real conundrums for the average manny!

“I didn’t feel too awkward around them yet. Maybe I was a natural at this childcare shit. Of course, it had been less than two minutes.”

Amber L Johnson has a knack for writing charismatic and lovable characters. I have adored every character in her books and have found each of them relatable in different ways. I felt drawn into this story immediately and loved the time I spent getting to know these characters. This story did have serious undertones but with the humorous situations and hot romance peppered throughout the book, it was the perfect balance of both serious and fun. I never felt pulled too far in one direction.

Eight Days a Week is another hit for me from Amber L Johnson. It’s safe to say I’m a fan for life and I can’t wait to see what Ms Johnson gives us next!

“Where have you been all my life?”

“I guess I was waiting for you to find me. I’m sorry I’ve been so scared.”

53 Letters For My Lover

By Leylah Attar

Adult Women’s Fiction/Romance

This is not your typical love story. It’s not so black and white. Lines are crossed. Walls are smashed. Good becomes bad. Bad becomes very, very good.
Shayda Hijazi—the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect mother. For thirty-three years she has played by the rules, swallowing secrets, burying dreams, and doing whatever it takes to anchor her family. Shayda Hijazi is about to come face to face with the one thing that can rip it all apart, the one thing her heart has always been denied: love.
Troy Heathgate—untamed, exhilarating, dangerous—a man who does exactly as he pleases. Life bends to his will. Until he comes across the one thing he would give it all up for, but can never have.

Now Shayda is flying free and Troy has found the one thing that centers his soul, but even as they beat the odds, a cancer diagnosis puts Shayda in a painful dilemma. On the one hand is the man who makes her feel gloriously alive and on the other, her children, and a husband ravaged by the past.

EXCERPT

The doorbell rings. Repeatedly. Followed by loud thumping on the door.
“Coming, coming! Now what did you what forget?” I swing the door open.
My heart screeches to a slamming halt. “Troy.” I turn pale. “You…you shouldn’t be here.”
“No?” He storms past me into the house. “Where should I be, Shayda? Waiting by the phone? Staking out your office? Checking my email? Where the fuck, Shayda?” His fist slams into the console table, so ‘fuck’ is an obscure, jarring thud, like some censored song on the radio.
“I changed my mind.”
“You changed your mind. Just like that?” He starts pacing the hallway. “And when were you were planning to tell me exactly? When, Shayda?”
“I made a mistake.” My voice quivers. “I got caught up in the moment. We were alone, we were away. It was…it was all an illusion.”
“An illusion?” He pulls me hard against him. Our bodies collide, knocking the breath out of me. “Is this an illusion?”
His lips assault mine.
“And this?” His hand slides under my dress, claiming my thigh.
“What about this, Shayda?” He pushes my panties aside and slides two fingers inside.
“Tell me, Shayda. Tell me this is all in my head.” He shoves me against the door and deepens his strokes. “Tell me this is nothing.” He rubs his fingers on my neck, leaving the unmistakable trail of my reaction.
“This is you, Shayda.” His finger slips inside my mouth. “Your taste, your smell, your skin, your touch.” He grabs me by the hair and pulls my head back. “Tell me you’re not real, Shayda. Tell me!”
I feel the gathump gathump of his heart. Our breath comes in short, shallow gasps. His eyes darken, black holes pushing sky blue irises to the edges of raw emotion. Hunger. Anger. Love. Pain.
