Review: A Wicked and Beautiful Garden by Katie McGarry

Posted on

Twenty-eight year-old Cassie Strega can’t escape fate.

All she wants is to live a normal, quiet life delivering the babies in her small town. But when she discovers she comes from a lineage of witches, her life becomes extraordinary—in the gravely dangerous type of way.

Then, she’s reunited with her first love.

Orion, the sultry Fae warrior who broke her heart years before, is searching for a baby. Not just any baby, but the queen of the Fae who will one day lead them in their final battle against the demons determined to rule the world. The same baby who has been calling to Cassie for help in her dreams.

Fighting the intense attraction of their former blood bond, Cassie and Orion work together to find the child. But when the heartbreak that nearly destroyed Cassie nine years before looms once more, she’ll have to decide whether getting involved in the supernatural war is worth losing everything, including her life.

My Review

“From the moment I saw you, my world changed. It’s not a euphemism. It’s as true as the sun rises in the morning and the stars shine at night. I saw you before you realized there was anything like me. The ground beneath me gave way and I fell hard…I fell fast. I knew in that moment that God had made me for you, and it was my job to love you, care for you, protect you, putting your needs before my own–even if your happiness meant my suffering.”

“Heaven, hell, and earth, Cassie. I will move each and every single one for you.”

When I first came across this book, I was like sign me up please! I am a huge fan of Katie McGarry’s and have read almost every YA novel she’s written. So, when I heard she was releasing an adult fantasy book, I knew it was not to missed and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. A Wicked and Beautiful Garden sucked me in from the very first page and I could not wait to see how this story would play out….

A Wicked and Beautiful Garden follows the story of Cassie and Orion. All Cassie has ever wanted was to live a quiet and normal life. But, when she discovers she’s a witch, any hope of normalcy flies out the window. And if discovering your a witch wasn’t bad enough, imagine how Cassie feels when she’s reunited with her first love. Orion broke Cassie’s heart many years ago and is now back and on the same quest as Cassie. In order to find the destined queen of the Fae, Cassie and Orion must put aside their past and work together. This quest will be anything but easy. There are many risks and obstacles ahead and Cassie must decide if this is a fight she truly wants to be in….

A Wicked and Beautiful Garden is a captivating read from beginning to end. I found the storyline to be refreshing and intriguing. I was instantly hooked and didn’t want to put this book down. I loved all of the paranormal aspects of the story and the authors take on these fantastical creatures. I thought Cassie’s character was real and easy to relate to. Her emotions were palpable. I felt as though I was experiencing everything right along with Cassie. I desperately wanted to hate Orion, but I just couldn’t. He’s the most likable jerk! Sure he made mistakes and hurt Cassie, but he thought he was doing them for the right reasons. His followed his heart and never got over the pain he caused. You could tell that he truly loved and adored Cassie and would do anything to win her over. He was 100% swoon-worthy and I was excited to see if Cassie would give him another chance.

Cassie and Orion’s journey is not an easy one. It’s filled with lots of ups and downs and obstacles along the way. Their pull and chemistry was off the charts. Together these two are a force to be reckoned with and you just can’t help but root for these two to figure things out and find a way towards a happily ever after.

A Wicked and Beautiful Garden exceeded my expectations and took me on one wild ride. This book is filled with lots of action, danger, suspense, and sexy good times. There are unexpected twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat and an ending that will leave you dying for more. The stage has been set and the stakes, higher than ever and I for one will be anxiously waiting to see how it will all come together.

In the end, this book was everything I wanted and was hoping for. I feel in love with the characters and their story. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Cassie and Orion next. I’m sure it will be another wild and crazy ride and I can’t wait!

Title: Changing the Rules

Author: Catherine Bybee

Release Date: March 23, 2021

Publisher: Montlake

As an employee of MacBain Security and Solutions, Claire Kelly can certainly hold her own. Armed with an impressive set of covert skills, she’s more than prepared to tackle any job that comes her way…except one involving Cooper Lockman.

Cooper and Claire used to work together before his feelings for her sent him packing to Europe for six long years. But now he’s back and determined to ignore the still-smoldering heat that lingers between them.

Their current mission: go undercover together at a California high school to root out the mastermind behind a prostitution ring targeting young girls. The closer they get to the truth and the closer they get to each other, however, the deadlier their task becomes. As Claire and Cooper risk their lives to bring down their target, will their hearts be the final casualties?

Excerpt from Changing the Rules by Catherine Bybee

Claire collapsed onto the living room sofa the second she walked in the door. Not only had she suffered a headache the entire day, Cooper ran her like a trainer working an Iron Man competitor.

“That sounds like a bad day,” Jax said as she walked around the corner of the kitchen.

“You don’t want to know.”

Claire flung an arm over her eyes to block out the sun.

She heard Jax walk in the room and then exhale as she sat down. “You’re right. I don’t give a crap what happened in school, unless it involved Cooper. What I want is the details of last night after I got out of the car.”

Before Cooper picked them up, Claire and Jax had agreed that Jax would give them a few minutes to have a private conversation. Now Claire regretted that plan.

“The long story, or the short story?” Claire asked.

“Whatever one you want to deliver.”

Claire’s arms slid off her head, and she pushed herself into a sitting position.

“Cooper has a thing for me.”

Jax sat silent, blinked a few times. “Okay, and?”

“What do you mean, ‘okay, and?’”

“Sorry, Claire, but that’s obvious. I think you’d have to be an idiot to not see it. Even the guys on the team see it.”

“What? Are they talking about—”

Jax stopped her with a shake of the head. “Of course not. But you can tell by how they look at the two of you that they know there’s an attraction.”

Claire pointed to her chest. “I’m not doing anything, it’s him.”

“Maybe it’s more him.”

She kept shaking her head. “No, it’s all him. I’m not instigating anything.”

“You flirt with him all the time.”

“I do not,” Claire huffed.

One look from Jax and she rescinded her statement. “Okay, we banter. But it’s always been like that. I have the pool stick, he makes some kind of phallic joke. It’s banter. Not flirting.”

Jax sat back, crossed her arms over her chest. Claire couldn’t believe her best friend was calling her out. “We’re friends. And last night he ruined that by telling me he’s had a thing for me since we met. Told me he left sunny California for dreary London because I was too young and naive to handle him when I first got here.”

Jax narrowed her eyes. “Is that really how he said that?”

Claire’s headache was coming back. “No. He said I was a child.”

“A child?”

Claire stood up from the couch, started for the kitchen. “He kept repeating that I was eighteen back then.”

Jax followed behind. “Which is true.”

Claire yanked open the fridge, pulled out a beer. “Whose side are you on?”

“Yours. Always. But I just don’t see where all the fire is about this. Cooper owns up to the flirting comments and puppy-dog looks he gives you, and you’re pissed because he walked away six years ago.”

Like picking a lock, the pieces slid into place and finally started to click. “But he’s my friend.”

“Trying to say you’ve never thought of him as more?”

“No.” Her denial was quick.

Jax started to smile. “You’ve never checked out his ass? The guy can fill out a pair of jeans.”

Some of the anger she’d harbored all day eased. “That’s true.”

“And that smile. When he’s belly laughing he has the tiniest dimples.”

Claire closed her eyes, pictured his smile. She hadn’t noticed the dimples, but now that she thought about it . . . She opened her eyes to find Jax staring at her.

“Sounds like you have a thing for him,” Claire said.

“Wouldn’t matter if I did, and I don’t, by the way, but it wouldn’t matter. The guy can’t stop looking at you.”

“God, what am I going to do with him?”

“I don’t think you have to do anything. It’s not like he asked you out and you said no and now it’s awkward.”

“You’re right. It’s worse than that.”

“You’re overthinking it.” Jax pushed off the counter. “You know what, let’s gussy up a little and hit a proper happy hour. We’ll talk in German and pretend we don’t speak English and shamelessly flirt.”

Claire abandoned her beer. “Now that is exactly what I need to do and get my mind off of boys.”

I sold my future to the man who ruined my past.

I had a plan:

Sign a contract and board a plane to Ibiza. The anonymous deal would salvage the smoldering wreckage of my life.

It would not involve billionaire Harrison King. AKA, the reason I need saving in the first place.

He’s as beautiful as he is cruel. A British business titan who’s practically royalty and makes a living getting what he wants.

The man flies private. Dates supermodels. But the crisp accent and cocky smirk don’t fool me. He’s a gentleman on the outside, a savage beneath. Dangerous, rough and brutal.

Because after my attempt to publicly stand up for those who needed it…

He destroyed my reputation.

Now, he’s come for the rest of me.

Except it’s not salvation he’s promising. It’s nights in Ibiza, under his roof, rules, his control.

I sold my soul to a man I hate. Now, he owns me.

I can’t back out. No matter what kind of punishment he has in store.

Harrison King knows my secrets…

But kings keep secrets too.

Once upon a time…

Yeah, no.

What a bunch of bullshit.

I’m no Prince Charming. My life isn’t a fairy tale. And I’m positive of one absolute truth—I’m not dying in this hellhole.

Bad enough, David Crane makes bank off my fights. I won’t give him the satisfaction of profiting from my death.

It’s Fight Night, and the Coliseum’s ground floor is packed. Rows of chairs ten deep wrap around a steel cage in the center of the prestigious arena. A cloud of tobacco smoke thickens air rank with too much cologne, perfume, and sweat. Strategically placed bouncers serve as crowd control. Provocative, leather-clad bartenders hustle to keep pace with the steady flow of orders. Flirtatious waitresses work an upscale horde, sating the mob’s appetite for liquor while fighters quench their thirst for violence.

The action flows to a brothel above the arena. Up there, enough money buys limitless debauchery. Shit those sick fucks do in those luxury rooms is so bad, we won’t even allow it in Mayhem—and our motto is Pick your pleasure, so…

Yeah. It’s fucking disgusting.

Crane built himself a kingdom on the border of Ocala National Forest. As far as I know, there’s only one known entrance, making Gomorrah virtually inescapable. But trust I’m getting out of here, and it won’t be in a body bag.

Never turn your back on your enemy.

The warning echoes in my head. Keeps me upright long after I should have fallen. My opponent is taller than me, agile, too, but slim. Felix’s jabs are quick, but I’m quicker. His kicks brutal, but I’m stronger. The guy’s landed more than a few solid hits, and I swear he’s ruptured something vital when he roundhouses me. But I’m a brick shithouse and withstand the battering, giving better than I’ve receive.

Shame I have to kill him. He’s putting up a hell of a fight.

Cracked ribs are razor blades grating against my lungs. Sweat stings my eyes. My brain is bashed around inside my skull, with each crash of Felix’s fist doing more damage. But I’m still alive.

Mayhem born and raised, I’ve fought my way to the top of the Unholy’s food chain, earning a place as the gang’s most feared enforcer. I know how to hurt someone, and I dig deep as I swing my right arm in a heavy overhand, aiming for an imaginary target beyond Felix’s head. The goal is never to hit the person. It’s to punch through them. I aim past him, the slam of my knuckles shattering flesh and bone. Christ, I destroy the man’s face, ruining his orbital socket.

I’m relentless. Can’t give Felix a shred of mercy. Instead, I bare my teeth, an animal moving in for the kill, and hammer him with a volley of punches until my arms scream from exhaustion.

Concussed, I see three of Felix and maintain the attack on the one in the middle. He crawls away, groping at the mat, and gains his feet. I spit out a mouthful of blood and charge forward. I nail him hard enough to buckle his legs. My guard stays up, and although I never hesitate, I’m still a fucking human being beneath this…monster…and I can’t bring myself to whale on a man when he’s on his knees.

Die, damn you.

There’s no glory in my inevitable victory—no honor in beating someone who lost the fight a dozen punches ago. But the battle won’t end until one of us is dead.

The crowd’s roar is thunderous, their bloodlust sickening. These people are supposed to be civilized members of society. God-fearing, law-abiding aristocracy who glare down their collective nose at folks who live outside of their manicured world. To them, I’m trash—less than nothing. A criminal who, they believe, has earned my place in this cage.

When other guys my age were out doing God knows what, I was home making school lunches, helping with math homework, and making dioramas of Native American stories all the while keeping up with my very lucrative gaming hustle. I haven’t been with a woman in years. My last steady girlfriend was the girl I took to prom three months before my parents died. I haven’t been out with a woman in at least ten years. I tried to date at first but it was hard. Having a relationship just wasn’t possible. Most women only want me for my money. The others want fame. I am not inclined to let them seek it with me. Others ran when I told them I was raising my six younger brothers. Besides, there is only one woman I want and I don’t even know who she really is.

Her profile picture is just an up-close photo of stunning brown eyes and a sweep of brown bangs. Every time I upload something, she trolls the fuck out of me and oddly enough I love it. I finish the live game play and scroll through the comments. I am actively looking for her. Her snide, witty comments make me happy for some reason. My life revolved around my brother’s and gaming. Now that they are grown men and gaming holds little appeal, I relish reading her comments.

Now that my brothers are out there in the world, I’m finding myself having a bit of empty nest syndrome. They are doing things they are proud of, while I can’t even seem to be happy doing what I do. Even Kyle, who graduated high school in May, is already taking summer courses at the University Of South Florida. Logan is the only one who has his own apartment, but he’s always on the road so I don’t know why he has the damn thing. He plays professional rugby in the United Kingdom. He’s twenty-two with a lot to prove.

Just as I am about to shut my computer down for the night, I get a message on my website’s chat feature. Usually, I ignore those, preferring to interact with comments, but tonight I can’t. It’s her. I decide that tonight’s the night I get to know her better.

“Don’t run from me, Sun.”
“I can’t be here.” My voice is fragile and shaky. I need space, but he doesn’t give me that, instead he steps closer. I raise my hands in the air as I take a step back. “You can let me go,” I whisper. “I won’t tell anyone. But you have to let me go.” I can’t control the way you make me feel.
“I can’t let you go.”
I take another step back, and my butt hits the desk in the corner of the library.
“Because you’re mine now, and I won’t let anyone have you.”
His words shock me, making my muscles freeze. I’ve felt the heat of every stare, but this is more, and the look in his eyes scares me.
“You don’t even like me. You hate me.” I shake my head, not wanting to let my brain go there. Denying the truth that is right in front of me. He moves closer, his body touching mine.
“Does this feel like I hate you?”
“You kidnapped me . . .”
“I did what I had to do.” His answer is cryptic, as usual. I want to bash his head against a wall for not telling me what he means, but my brain and arms aren’t working properly due to the proximity of our bodies. I know I should push him off, but I can’t think of anything but the feel of him.
I hate him, but most of all, I hate myself for feeling this way.
“I’ll tell you the truth,” he says, “but it will cost you more than food.”
“You have to earn it . . .” His words hang in the air, mischievous, sinful, and full of dirty promises.
“What do you want?”
“I thought you wouldn’t take something not given?”
He lifts his hands, touching my jaw.
“Who says anything about taking?” He smirks.
“But you just said . . .”
“I said I wanted you, Ivy. And I do. I want to taste you. Feel you. I want to know what it feels like when you come apart under my tongue.”
“I hate you.”
“You don’t hate me. Let me show you just how much you don’t hate me. Your body will show you.”
He lifts his hands to cup my jaw. His fingers trail against my skin. “Does this feel like you hate me?” He continues his path down the hollow of my neck. “How about this?”
“Why then?”
“I have my reasons.”

Advance praise for Want Me Always:

“A heartfelt story that will make you laugh and swoon! The perfect feel-good read!” –Laura Kaye, NYT Bestselling Author

“A seaside reunion story that will have you believing that love heals heartbreak and truly transcends time.” ~ Christi Barth, USA Today bestselling author

Exclusive Excerpt:

“How did you know about me wanting to make partner?” Wren asked as they climbed the porch steps of her family’s beach house.

Smith laughed. “You’re not the only Donovan sister to eat at my restaurant. Raven keeps me up to date on you, too.”

“I’m surprised she mentions me.”

“Only when I ask. I like hearing about what you’re up to.”

Wren’s head tilted. “Really? After all this time?”

He met her gaze. “Always.”

After blooming into a slow smile, she said. “That’s nice.”

“It’s the truth. You stopped coming to the island but I didn’t stop caring about you. We were good friends…once.” Smith reached for one of her hands.

She nodded. “We were. Friends.” Wren looked like she might say something else, but then looked down at their entwined fingers. “I didn’t know what to expect when I went to the restaurant tonight.” She lifted her lashes to gaze at him again. “But somehow I knew you’d make everything okay.” His heart thrummed. “I’m glad. I’d do anything to put a smile on your face.”

Her lids tightened just slightly as she peered at him as if with new eyes. “You’re the same but different. In a good way. Is that weird to say?”

He grinned as he shook his head. “No. So are you.”

Wren looked surprised. “How so?”

Drawing closer, his voice softened. “I always knew you were smart and would be a huge success. And you were always the prettiest girl on the island in summer. But now, damn woman, you’re more beautiful than I ever imagined.”

Wren’s cheeks flushed pink and her gaze turned down to the floorboards. “You’re just saying that.”

Gently, Smith cupped her jaw and bored into her dazzling green eyes. “I never say anything I don’t mean.”

She nodded, her pupils dilating. “Oh-kay.”

“The fact that you don’t know how gorgeous you are tells me you’ve never been with a man who truly appreciates you. And that’s a damn shame.” Smith’s fingers slid to the back of her neck and threaded through her hair. “A smart man would understand your value and worship you. Have you ever been

worshiped, Wren?”

Wren swallowed hard. “No.”

“Would you like to know how it feels?”

“Yes,” she whispered.

Without another word his mouth closed on hers. He kissed her softly at first, savoring the exquisite taste and feel of her flesh. His tongue darted across her lower lip, then dipped into her mouth. A tiny whimper escaped her throat and she answered by stroking his tongue with hers. Turning her head slightly, she opened her mouth to grant him better access. Accepting her invitation, he plunged deeper, nibbling on her bottom lip then sucking it into his mouth. Wren’s knees wobbled. She wrapped her arms around his firm torso, pulling herself against him. Fierce need swelled in him, sending heat straight to his groin as a low growl rumbled in his chest. They kissed for what seemed like hours, discovering each other as raindrops spattered the porch roof. Finally, breathless and filled with so much want he could scream,

Smith pulled away.

“Wow,” she said as her chest heaved.

“Yeah. Wow.”

The second novel in New York Times bestselling author Kelly Elliott’s Meet Me in Montana series turns up the emotion with a story about finding true love and healing broken hearts.

Grieving the loss of her fiancé two years ago, Kaylee longs for a fresh start. When she follows her best friend from Atlanta to Hamilton, Montana, Kaylee looks forward to the wild terrain and a new town to help her forget the memories and dreams of a life that will never be hers.

After a tragic car accident, Ty Shaw is told he may never walk again. But Ty doesn’t easily accept defeat, and through grit, determination, and more physical therapy than any man should ever endure, he beats the odds. Even though he’ll never ride again, Ty longs to feel alive—the way he did on the Professional Bull Riders circuit.

When Kaylee meets Ty, she finds him just as captivating as the rugged landscape of Montana. When Ty is with Kaylee, he remembers just how good life can be. But can they move beyond their broken hearts and dreams to find a second chance with each other?

I stood and watched the smoke from the burn pile turn to pitch black. It raced up into the air and covered the picture-perfect blue sky. I couldn’t even see the snow-covered mountains on the other side of the burn pile anymore. That wasn’t a good sign.

“Oh shit,” I whispered as I looked at the old tractor tire I had thrown into the fire. “That might not have been the best idea.”

The sound of a truck pulling up had me waving my hand in the air to clear out the smoke. Hopefully it wasn’t the fire department again. The last time they were here, I had set fire to a pan filled with grease in my sink. Who would have known how easily grease fires started?

Walking toward the gravel drive, I felt my heartbeat pick up. God help me. It was worse than the fire department . . . it was Ty.

“Perfect, as if this day couldn’t possibly get any worse.”

I was covered in dirt, smoke, and Lord only knows what else, and Ty Shaw was walking toward me, looking as handsome as ever, which made my heart race a little bit more. The man was too good looking for his own good, and what made him even more attractive was he didn’t act like he knew it.

“What is it with you and fires, Kaylee?” Ty asked, a sexy-as-sin smirk on his face as he walked over to me.

Lord, that smile. Dark-brown hair and eyes the color of the Montana sky. Not to mention the smoking-hot body.

I chuckled to myself at the irony of the “smoking-hot” reference, with my huge fire going behind me.

With a half shrug and a wink, I replied, “What can I say, I have weird fetishes.”

Ty’s eyes darkened with a sexual look that left my lower stomach pulling with desire. We constantly danced around the fact that we were sexually attracted to each other. Or maybe I just secretly wanted him to want me, because truth be told, I wanted this man like no other. My poor overworked vibrator could back up that claim.

“Is that so? Fire?”

“Don’t worry,” I egged him on. “I keep it out of the bedroom.”

Ty stared at me for the longest time before he turned to the fire. “What in the hell did you put in there? It looks like you’re burning rubber. Smells like it too.”

I cleared my throat. “Um, well. There were these old tractor tires, and I rolled one into the fire and—”

Ty spun around and gaped at me. “You burned tires? Kaylee, it’s against the law to burn tires.”

My eyes widened, and my heart raced like a hummingbird’s wings. “What? No one told me that!”

“Why in the hell would anyone have to tell you that? We need to get away from this fire.”

Ty grabbed my hand, making my breath catch in my throat simply from his touch; then he dragged me away from the fire.

“The toxins from the rubber are dangerous.”

I looked back over my shoulder at the puffs of black smoke. “Good thing I only put one tire in, I guess, right?” Then I laughed, because what else was I supposed to do?
