Review: Red Velvet by Lauren Luman

Posted on

Submission.

It’s what Carrie Drazen thought she wanted until a violent attack leads her to a life outside of the BDSM world she knew.

Until Malakai Jackson.

His presence makes her question the life she’s been living and her vow to give up kink. He embodies the perfect Dom. Commanding. Attentive. Masterful.

But someone from Carrie’s past has other plans for her.

Scarred for life, is Malakai the one who will lead her back into the world of submission? Can he keep her safe?

My Review

“He obviously sees right through me, as if the eyes truly are the windows to the soul, and mine are wide the fuck open.”

Wow! Wow! Wow! Did I say WOW?! This book was so unexpected and I just loved it. Red Velvet is the debut novel from Lauren Luman and if this first novel is any indication, she has a bright future ahead of her.

Red Velvet is sexy, thrilling and captivating. Carrie and Malaki’s story pull you in from the very beginning and take you one delicious and thrilling journey. This book might be a novella, but I promise you it packs on heck of a punch. From sexy good times to surprising twists, this debut novel is definitely worth the read.

I think author Lauren Luman is off to a wonderful start and I look forward to checking out more from her in the future.

EXCERPT:

She drove into the Honey, seeing the parking lot empty except for Aryas’s black Cayenne and a black GMC SUV, feeling that hunger grow.

Right.

Fine.

Fun and done.

All good.

She grabbed the handles of her small bag before she opened the door and threw her leg out.

As instructed (by Aryas), she parked close to and approached the back door to the club.

As expected, it was open.

She moved through the halls, keeping centered and focused so as not to have any kind of freakout that the last time she was there, she’d been carried out by Aryas, beaten to hell and not giving a damn.

Because she might have been beaten to hell.

But the worst of it was, her heart had been broken.

She walked directly to Aryas’s playroom, known as the red room since it was decorated in reds, and the opaque shades that could be drawn down over the wall of windows to black out what was inside were the only shades in any of the rooms that weren’t black, they were red.

As she approached, she saw the red shades were drawn down.

She kept her gait steady.

It had been a year and the last scene she’d had was a bad one. She’d been assaulted at the same time she’d had a relationship end very, very badly with a man she’d thought she’d loved and was considering spending the rest of her life with.

That happened.

This was now.

It was just a look-over anyway. It might be she wouldn’t like what she saw. Or he wouldn’t. And then giving any headspace to worrying what came after that was just a waste.

She was a Domme.

She’d trained under Mistress Sixxand Mistress Amélie, the two finest Dommes Evangeline had ever had the honor to see at play.

And before Kevin, even if she’d only been in her late twenties, she was one of the most sought-after Dommes at the Honey.

Now she was just thirty years old and she made good money. She took care of herself. She was successful. Educated. She wasn’t hard to look at. She had her own style in looks, clothes (and play) that she was honing to perfection.

She could do this.

She totally could do this.

She opened the door, stepped in and saw him.

Oh my.

She was so totally going to do this.

She closed the door behind her, dropped her bag and stood right where she was.

Aryas’s red room, known as his because this was mostly where he took his slaves, looked more like an opulent boudoir. Plush. Sumptuous. Heavy, carved furniture. Big, posted bed dressed in red and topped at headboard and ceiling with mirrors. Candelabrums everywhere.

No candles had been lit right then. The scene was not set, only red-shaded table lamps here and there were illuminating the space.

It still gave it a feel.

And that feel was good.

But more, the man before her was amazing.

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

EXCERPT:

Aryas knew her.

He knew what she liked.

He knew how she played.

He knew exactly what would make her squirm in her seat.

And he knew precisely how long it had been since she’d had her kink.

“You’re throwing down the gauntlet,” she accused quietly.

“You feel like picking up the glove?” he shot back, shaking the piece of paper at her.

She stared into Aryas’s eyes.

No strings.

Anything she wanted to do to get him off.

When he was done with her, he’d vanish from her life.

Her gaze dropped to the paper.

“Be you, and we’ll make it interesting, lay five grand on that fucker, he’ll give you one go and then he’ll move on,” Aryas pushed, but it was a dare.

She looked back at him.

A dare.

Yes, he knew her.

“No reflection on you and your skills, which are sublime, my beautiful baby.” He grinned wicked grin. “Just that this guy is unbreakable. There’s no edge for him any Domme can get anywhere near to push him off and that’s what he’s looking for. Being taken to the farthest edge and shoved right the fuck over.”

Taken to the farthest edge.

Evangeline was not into that. She wasn’t into extreme. Not like many who were into that in the life.

No, the edges she coasted were exactly what Aryas wasn’t quite saying, but she read this guy couldn’t handle.

Unless he had the right Mistress to lead the way.

Damn it all, she was getting wet.

“Five grand?” she snapped.

Aryas pressed his lips together and she was too peeved to get more peeved that he did it to suppress his amusement.

He unpressed them to confirm, “Five grand. But Leenie, babe, just to get it straight, he walks away from you at first meet, we’re even. It’s only if you get a crack at him the bet is on.”

She lifted her nose at the same time she snatched the paper from his hand, declaring, “He won’t walk away.”

“He might,” Aryas said gently, and his sudden loss of humor and careful tone made her focus on him again. “Beware of that. He’s done it before. In some ways, he doesn’t give a shit about anything. In some ways, he can be frustratingly choosy.”

“If I want him, he walks away, I’ll still get him,” she announced.

ARRANGED - Tour banner

arrangedKash Kamdar is the king of a peaceful but powerful island nation. As Loa Mali’s sovereign, he is always in control, the final authority. Until his mother uses an ancient law to force her son into marriage. His prospective queen is a buttoned-up intellectual, nothing like Kash’s usual party girl. Still, from the moment of their forced engagement, he can’t stop thinking about her.

Dayita Samar comes from one of Loa Mali’s most respected families. The Oxford-educated scientist has dedicated her life to her country’s future. But under her staid and calm exterior, Day hides a few sexy secrets of her own. She is willing to marry her king, but also agrees that they can circumvent the law. Just because they’re married doesn’t mean they have to change their lives. It certainly doesn’t mean they have to fall in love.

After one wild weekend in Dallas, Kash discovers his bride-to-be is more than she seems. Engulfed in a changing world, Kash finds exciting new possibilities for himself. Could Day help him find respite from the crushing responsibility he’s carried all his life? This fairy tale could have a happy ending, if only they can escape Kash’s past…

My Review

“She could be his secret. She would never have to know how weak he was, how dark his wants were. He could pretend to indulge her and steal something for himself.”

“If this was what love felt like, Kash didn’t want it. This was a terrible ache in his gut, a pendulum swinging between anger and insane grief.”

Told from dual points of view, Arranged follows the story of Kash and Day. Kash never wanted to be king, but fate had other plans in mind for him. Now as ruler of Loa Mali, Kash is living the life and enjoying the fruits of being king. He is on top of the world until his mother decides that he must marry. His prospective queen is non other than Day. He knew Day before he was king and now she is nothing like the women he is used to. However, Day is good at putting on a facade. Beneath her buttoned up exterior lies an unbelievable and sexy past. When Kash learns of Day’s previous indiscretions, will he jump at the all the new possibilities or will he ruin everything he never knew he wanted? You’ll just have to pick up Arranged and find out for yourself.

Overall, I really enjoyed Arranged. I thought the story-line was refreshing and unique. I loved the characters and couldn’t help but be intrigued by them. This book covers a lot of themes from royal duties and honor to an unexpected BDSM twist. I will say that the BDSM themes in this particular book were a bit out of the box for me. That being said, I thought they were done really well and didn’t take me too far out of my comfort zone.

Arranged is a fast paced and sexy read. It has just the right mix of secrets, lies, unexpected truths and some super sexy good times. This is a great novella to spend the afternoon getting wrapped up in. Overall, a very enjoyable read.

EXCERPT

“Are we a happy couple?”

“I don’t think we’ve had time enough to be sure of that yet, but I know we were once.” She’d thought it through in a way she never had before. She had a much different view of those months with Kash in England. “You were courting me back then, weren’t you? You wanted me to be your girlfriend.”

He sat down in the plush chair that dominated the sitting area portion of his bedroom. Normally they stayed in the living room, but he’d wanted more privacy. This was the only place in his suite that wasn’t covered by CCTV, the only place where they could truly be alone. Everything about the space was masculine and decadent, including the man himself. With his hair disheveled and his chest on display, it wasn’t hard at all to see him as a primal male.

One she’d dearly enjoy taming.

“I don’t think you realized it at the time.”
She was willing to admit her faults. “I didn’t. I had my nose in a book most of the time back then and I had little experience with men. No, I had no idea you were interested in me beyond copying my notes from class when you slept in.”

“It would surprise you to know that I often thought about sleeping in with you.” His voice had gone low and gentle. “I was crazy about you back then, Day. I find myself in the same position today, but I don’t want to scare you. I know you think we should take this slow and I will honor your wishes, but I want this marriage to work. You see me as a playboy, but I don’t want to be some forty-plus player who trades on his money to keep young girls around him. I think it might be time for me to find out if I can be the king my father would have wanted me to be.”

It was all she needed to hear. If he wanted to try, she was ready. Despite his reputation, she’d fallen right back into a peaceful friendship with him. He’d been the old Kash, supporting her when she needed it. He’d asked her questions about her work with the education department and then gave her ideas on how to handle the parliament. He hadn’t told her what she should do. He’d suggested, debated.

“I think you’ll find me less averse to giving this marriage a real try than you think. I was planning on talking to you about using the Palm Ceremony to begin to explore what we could be as a couple.”

He frowned. “I’m not sure what that means. You want to talk? Or have counseling? Because that sounds terrible.”

“I was talking about sex, Kashmir. I thought we could use this time to see if we’re sexually compatible.”
He popped up out of his chair like an eager puppy. “Yes. I think that is a brilliant idea. We should start now. Don’t worry. I intend to be gentle with you.”

She didn’t move at all. “Like you are with your lovely flowers?”

“Women deserve a man’s care,” he said quietly. “Day, I can’t erase my past.”

“I don’t want you to.” He misunderstood her problems with his statement. “But I do need you to understand that I’m not one of those flowers. I’m not here to sit at your side and bat my eyelashes in the hopes that you’ll buy something for me. I don’t work like that. I don’t care about your money.”

“That is easy for you to say. You’re about to have access to all of it, aren’t you?”

He had a point. “Even if I wasn’t, that wouldn’t be why I would want you, Kash. Sit down. We have some things to talk about before we get started. Come here close to me.”

He moved to the chaise she was sitting on, lowering himself down with a sullen frown. “I knew there would be talking.”
She was fairly certain his lovely flowers did very little talking, but he would get used to it. “Why did you want me back then?”

“I liked you. I liked talking to you. I liked being around you. I rather liked who I was when I was around you.” His expression softened. “I don’t think you knew how alluring you were to someone like me. You didn’t understand how beautiful you were, so you didn’t use it against me. Most women do.”

“Well, that happens when you surround yourself with women who are mostly valued for their looks. I don’t blame them. They’ve been told their beauty is the only thing worthy about them. If you want to meet women who don’t feel that way, you should probably expand out of models and actresses.”

“Well, you would be surprised how many gorgeous, sexy physicists turn me down because I’m not smart enough for them.”

And to move forward, the key to loving Darius isn’t about keeping his secrets—it’s about exposing them.

Tied to His Betrayal is intended for mature audiences.

My Review

“I’m seeing Darius beneath all the shields, and my world is collapsing around me.”

“There is so much that I want to take from her. I want her soul, her body. I want her, just like this.”

Tied to His Betrayal is the second book in the Dirty Little Secrets Series, but can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. Told from dual points of view, Tied to His Betrayal is Darius and Taylor’s story. Darius has to have control in every part of his life and is used to always having his way. Now that’s he’s a self-made billionaire, he can have anyone or anything that he wants. But, there’s only one person that he wants and that person is off limits to him. You see, he’s always wanted more with Taylor, but was afraid that he couldn’t be exactly what she needed, so he lied. He said what he needed to in hopes that she would move on and have the life that she deserves. However, fate had other plans in mind. When Taylor comes back into Darius’ life, it’s as if no time has passed at all. He tries desperately to put some space between them and fight the feelings that he’s always had, but that soon will prove to be impossible. Will Taylor and Darius finally give in and take a chance on what they so desperately want and need? There’s only one way to find out….

Tied to His Betrayal is a seductive and sexy read. Darius and Taylor’s story pulled me in from the very first page. When I first met the two of them, I just knew their story was going to be something special and boy, they did not disappoint. The chemistry and connection between the two of them was just explosive. It had you on pins and needles, with anticipation, just waiting for these two to give in. Their connection was so strong and survived the toughest of situations. All you could do is just sit back and cross your fingers that things would play out the way that you are hoping for.

Tied to His Betrayal is a quick and easy read. Once you pick it up, you are not going to want to put it down. The story-line is sexy and captivating. The characters are easy to connect with and their story is easy to get lost in. Tied to His Betrayal has just the right mix of sexiness, drama, suspense and angst. I really enjoyed this book and can not wait to see where the series will take us next.

Review: Bound Beneath His Pain (Dirty Little Secrets #1) by Stacey Kennedy

Posted on

boundbeneathhispain

The USA Today bestselling author of the Club Sin novels kicks off a deeply sensual new series by introducing readers to Micah, a man who takes what he wants—until he meets the one woman he needs.

Real estate mogul Micah Holt exerts absolute control over all aspects of his life. As a founding member of the Dominants Council that oversees San Francisco’s sex club scene, he keeps his dark side hidden away from the press, who will chase down any hint of scandal. He’s always in command of his world, careful to expose his closely guarded secrets only to those he knows he can trust. Then Allie Bennett shakes his legendary discipline. She’s beautiful, pure, untainted. But is Micah willing to sacrifice her innocence for his own selfish obsessions?

When that sexy smile makes her body burn, Allie tries with all her might to ignore it. For one thing, Micah’s her new boss. For another, he’s as complicated as he is devastatingly handsome. Still, Allie can only fight so much before she gives in to his dangerous games. She knows he’s got dark secrets. But when she discovers the true depth of his pain, Allie must decide how far she’s willing to go to light the way for love.

My Review

“That pull that I feel toward you is rare. You make me do things I would never do; break rules I would never break.”

“Every time I shut my eyes, you’re there. Every time I try not to think about you, you’re all I can think about. You’re haunting me. Every minute, every second, there’s nowhere to hide.”

“Then I find him. The strongest, most broken man I’ve ever known. But I realize he’s not the only broken one. We’ve both come from pasts that could’ve broken us completely, and yet somehow I can’t help but feel that they somehow had to happen, to make us. That without the one side, the other wouldn’t have been fulfilled. It makes me think that life is this big circle that’s been spinning in the wrong direction for a while, and right now, in this moment, our lives are going to correct themselves.”

I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into when I picked up this book. I haven’t read a lot by this author, but the synopsis had me intrigued, so I decided to give it a try. Bound Beneath His Pain was an intriguing read for me. It follows the story of Micha and Allie. The moment these two meet, they are drawn to each other like magnets. Micha can’t get Allie out of his head and will stop at nothing to win her over. Allie, has worked hard to get where she is in life. She desperately wants to do things on her own and not repeat her mother’s mistakes. So, when Micha comes into the picture she tries her hardest to stay away from the rich, sexy man. However, the more time she spends with him, the quicker she sees that he is nothing like she thought…..

Bound Beneath His Pain was a quick, yet enjoyable read. The characters intrigued me and captivated my interest. I thought the story-line was a lot of fun and that it was entertaining. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good BDSM story and I have to say that I really enjoyed this one. I found this story to be well written and it just sucked me in. It had me wanting to see how things would play out with Micha and Allie. I liked Micha right away. He was smart, sexy and intriguing with a hint of darkness. But, that darkness didn’t consume him. You could easily see the light in him and he was able to control the beast that was inside him. The fact that he was into BDSM, didn’t consume who he was. It was a part of him and something that he did need, but it wasn’t taken to the extreme. And Allie…I really liked her character. She was strong and not afraid to stand up for what she believed in. Yes, her past kept her guarded, but when she takes a chance on something, she gives it her all. She was just what Micha needed in his life. She gave him the light that he needed.

Overall, I think this new series is off to a great start. The characters are really likable. I think this book had just the right amount of sex, drama and intrigue. And while it did deal with BDSM, I enjoyed that this story wasn’t dark. I liked the fact that it had a softer edge to it. All in all, this was a good read and I’m looking forward to continuing on with this series and seeing where it will go next.

“Q was my destination. He was also my journey. My test. He was me.”

“I want our vows on my body until I’m ash and bone. I want our promise to seep into your blood and taint your soul.”

“Every hour makes me love you more. Every year, every minute, every moment we spend together. Tess…you do more than complete me. You heal me. And I’ll spend my entire life making sure you understand that.”

Pepper Winters’ Monsters in the Dark series, was my first real jump into the dark romance genre. She pushed my limits, and made me fall in love with these characters that I never thought would own my heart. So, when I heard that Pepper was going to write more Tess and Q, I was like sign me up please!! And let me tell you, Je sus a toi, does not disappoint. It might be a quick novella, but let me tell you, Pepper gives us everything and more that you could want from Tess and Q. She once again shows just how far these two have come and the obstacles that they’ve faced together on their journey to HEA. She has shown us what life was like after HEA. She has shown us that Q and Tess, while their passions might be dark, they have problems and insecurities, just like the rest of us. She has shown me that no matter what you throw at Q and Tess, they will always find their way back to each other….

Fans of Tess and Q, Je suis a toi, is an amazing read and should not be missed. If you love these characters as I do, you’ll never say no to more time with them. I loved every second of this little novella and hope that this won’t be the last that we see of Q & Tess.

Excerpt

“Don’t struggle. You know I’ll keep you safe.” Q’s murmur danced down my back.

My panic receded as trust billowed fast and true.

Q was born into darkness, but he’d never baptized me in his blackest desires. And because of that, I could implicitly say he spoke the truth. No matter what he did to me, he would never truly harm me.

Q paused, his tattooed chest soaking. His feathered sparrows fluffing off droplets almost alive on his skin. “I told you once never to fall for me. That I didn’t want the curse of breaking your heart while I broke so many other pieces of you.” His hands landed on my breasts, cupping them reverently. “Yet you fought me, just like you said you would. You fell for me, just like you promised me you would. And now, you’re willing to give me what I need even after I tricked you and lied.”

I swayed as I fell even deeper for this complex husband of mine. Q was all my fantasies in one glorious lifetime. The fact he finally wanted to share me with his child spoke volumes about his capacity to love.

“I’m so glad you ignored me, esclave.” His fingertips branded my nipples with pain. “So fucking happy you married me.” Pushing me backward, he smiled harshly as my spine met the pool wall. His chest strained as he sucked in a heavy breath. “You’re so fucking beautiful.”

My heart hammered in my ears as he kissed me.

His tongue laced with mine, and I sank into the sweet embrace, knowing it would be the last I received tonight. The air crackled with an impending storm. Q’s control frayed every second, his eyes drenching in determination and the salacious need to hurt.

Breaking the kiss, he opened his hand, revealing the other item he’d retrieved.

A tiny pair of silver scissors.

My Review

“I’d loved her for months. Yet it seemed like my entire life. I’d fallen for her as an adult. Yet she’d intrigued me as a child. She’d been born for me. I’d been born for her. We were linked. Joined by fate and history and destiny. Star-crossed, doomed from the start, absolutely forbidden lovers.”

“So much had happened. So much pain and debts and death. But this. A simple kiss in simple coffee shop in a simple world. This made it all worth it. This made it all priceless.”

Final Debt is finally here. The wait is over. As soon as this book hit my kindle, I dropped everything I was doing and dove into this story. I have been waiting on pins and needles to get my hands on this book. To say that I devoured this book is a complete and utter understatement. I was up three hours earlier than I normally would be on a Sunday, just to read this book. I could not put it down. The story and the words just consuming me. And let me tell you, it was worth every moment of lost sleep. As I sit here typing up this review, I am tired. I am exhausted. I am emotionally spent; completely drained. And it was worth every second.

What can I say about Final Debt? Final Debt was everything and more. Final Debt is exciting, intense and utterly captivating. You will be taken for the best ride yet. Your questions will be answered, and secrets will be revealed; some will shock and surprise you. Your jaw will be tired from clenching it with every suspenseful moment. You will be on the edge of your seat waiting, just waiting to see how this will all play out in the end. You will be filled with love, hope and anger; never knowing which emotion will be your next. Your mind will be blown.

I am so sad that this story has come to an end, but what a crazy, wild ride it’s been. Pepper Winters has continuously blown me away with this series; with each book being better than the last one. What she has given me here is an intense, gripping story with a very satisfying ending. Pepper Winters has taken me on the most incredible journey. She has taken me outside my normal little happy box of reading and has made fall in love with characters that I never thought I would. She has made me live and experience a world I never knew existed and one I know I will never forget.

“What I want is to belong to you. I want the world to know it. I want the ghosts who battled together for so long to hear it. I want us to become one.”

“He made more than just human. He’d made me immortal. Immortal in his love. Immortal in his passion.”

The Indebted Epilogue is truly a little treat. Excerpt: Final Debt

nila

“READY TO DIE, Nila?”

Cut’s voice physically hurt me as he forced me to my knees. The ballroom splendour mocked me as I bowed unwillingly at the feet of my executioner.

Velvet and hand-stitched crewel on the walls glittered like the diamonds the Hawks smuggled—a direct contrast to the roughly sawn wood and crude craftsmanship of the guillotine dais. No finesse. No pride. Just a raised podium, framework cushioning a large tarnished blade, and a rope dangling to the side.

“Don’t do this. Cut…think about what you’ve become. You can stop this.” My voice mimicked a beg but I’d vowed not to beg. I’d seen things, understood things, and suffered things I never thought I would be able to endure. I refused to cry or grovel. I wouldn’t give him that satisfaction.

“In five minutes, this will all be over, Weaver.” Cut bent to the side and collected a wicker basket.

The wicker basket.

I didn’t want to think about what its contents would be.

He placed it on the other side of the wooden block.

My lungs demanded more oxygen. My brain demanded more time. And my heart…it demanded more hope, more life, more love.

I’m not ready.

Not like this.

“Cut—”

“No. No more talking. Not after everything you’ve done.” Ripping a black hood from his pocket, he didn’t hesitate. No fanfare. No second guesses.

I cried out as the scratchy blackness engulfed my face, tightening by a cord around my throat.

The Weaver Wailer chilled me. The diamond collar that’d seen what I’d seen and whispered with phantoms of my slain family prepared to revoke its claim and detach from around my neck.

This was it.

The Final Debt.

Cut pushed my shoulders forward.

A heavy yoke settled over the top of my spine.

I closed my eyes.

I said goodbye.

I waited to die.

One Week Earlier

“NO!”

I pushed back, gripping the handrails of the private jet, throwing my weight against Daniel’s incessant pushing. “Stop!”

“Get up the fucking stairs, Weaver.” Daniel jabbed his elbow into my spine.

I stumbled, bashing my knee against the high tread. “You can’t do this!” How had this happened? How had mere hours turned the entire universe against me? Again.

I wanted to smash every clock. Tear out the cog from every watch.

Time had once again stolen my life.

Jethro!

Daniel cackled. “I think you’ll find we can.” He shoved me higher.

My heart hurt—as if every mile between us and Hawksridge was a blade slicing me further from Jethro’s protection—a disharmony in an already discorded symphony.

One moment, I’d been love-bruised and adored, tiptoeing back into the Hall; the next, I was trapped, forced to dress in jeans and a hoodie, and obey Daniel as he lurked in my doorway, barking orders to pack a few meagre belongings.

He hadn’t left me alone.

His eyes followed my every move. I couldn’t grab the gun I’d hidden thanks to Jasmine. I couldn’t text Jethro to tell him I’d been caught. All I could do was run around my room with my lover’s release still damp on my inner thighs and submit to my nemesis.

The only saving grace was beneath Daniel’s hateful stare, I’d managed to pack the clothing I’d altered a few weeks ago. The cuffs full of needles and hems armoured with tools of my seamstress trade. Those garments were my only hope. There was no loophole. No way to refuse.

I had to trust Jasmine would get word to Jethro. That he would come for me…

Before it’s too late.

The desolation I’d suffered when Daniel first caught me faded to indignant anger. I’d been so close to being free. I’d been in Jethro’s arms. I’d been away from his psychotic family. My heart hardened a little toward Jethro for making me go back.

Why? Why did you send me back?

I didn’t know if I’d have the courage to forgive him.

You know why. And you will. Of course, you will.

I couldn’t hate him because I wasn’t selfish. He’d sent me back to protect all of us. Those precious few who’d accepted him and he’d accepted in return. Love was the worst enemy, winding its commitment, ensuring no freedom when it came to clearheaded thinking of adversity.

Jethro loved too much. Felt too much. Suffered too much. And his siblings would be our downfall. Kestrel and Jasmine relied on him—just like I did. The responsibility of settling his family’s wrongs was a terrible burden to bear.

But he’s not alone.

I might’ve been stolen. Jethro’s plans to save me might be ruined. But I was still alive. Still breathing. I wasn’t the naïve girl who’d first arrived at Hawksridge. I was a woman in love with a Hawk. A Weaver who would draw Hawk blood.

It’s not over…

Pain exploded in my spine as Daniel stabbed me with his fist. “Get in the fucking airplane.”

“No!” I threw myself backward, looking frantically at the private hangar. We weren’t at Heathrow, but a small, private airfield called Turweston. “I won’t!”

No strangers I could call for help.

No police or air marshals.

When Daniel had stalked me from my room and shoved me outside, Cut had been waiting. With a victorious smile, he’d stuffed me in the back of a limousine.

With a purring engine, we’d pulled away from Hawksridge, tyres crunching on gravel as we followed the long driveway off the estate.

My eyes had scoured the trees, their silhouettes growing stronger as the sun tinted the sky with pink blushes. Daniel and Cut sat opposite me, toasting each other with a chilled bottle of champagne. However, I hadn’t been alone on my side of the limo—I had a guard.

Marquise, Bonnie’s damn henchman, sat beside me; a mountain of muscle, unyielding and impenetrable.

“Come along.” A strange voice raised my gaze.

A man in a captain’s uniform smiled from the top of the aircraft steps. The private plane’s fuselage glinted in graphite grey. Sparkling diamonds, inlaid in the shape of a windswept ribbon, decorated the tail.

“I don’t want to leave England.”

Daniel laughed behind me. “Like you have a choice.”

“I always have a choice, Buzzard.” I glowered over my shoulder. “Just like this choice of yours will not end well for you.”

If I don’t kill you, Jethro will.

As far as Daniel knew, his slain brother was supposedly rotting in some unmarked grave. Jethro was right. The element of surprise trumped any of Cut and Daniel’s grand delusions.

He snarled, “Watch it, bitch. Everything you say to me here will be paid in full when we’re there.”

“Now, now. No need for threats.” The captain climbed down a rung, holding out his hand. “She’ll get on board. Won’t you, my dear? No need to be afraid of flying. I have an exemplary record.” White hair tufted from either side of his pristine flying cap. In his mid-fifties, he looked fit and toned and impatient to take off.

“I can’t leave.”

I can’t be so far from Jethro.

The captain smiled, waving at his vessel. “Of course, you can. Plus, I bet you’ve never travelled in such style.”

“It’s nothing against your mode of transport. It’s the destination I disagree to. I’m staying here.” I dug my heels into the metal grate, fighting against Daniel’s perpetual pushing. “I don’t have my passport, visa… I can’t travel across borders, so you might as well let me return home.”

Home.

Had Hawksridge Hall become my home?

No, don’t be absurd.

But Jethro had. It didn’t matter where we ended up. What we did for work. How our lives panned out. As long as I was alive with Jethro by my side…I would be home.

“Don’t fuss about that.” The captain waved his hand in invitation. “Travel is good for the soul.”

Not my soul.

Travel meant my soul would become untethered from my body, thanks to Cut and the Final Debt.

The sun barely peeked over the horizon, hidden by soupy fog and reluctant night. The world refused to warm, unable to shed the morning frost or dislodge the claws of winter. England didn’t want to say goodbye as much as I did, its reluctant dawn wanting me to stay.

“If you don’t get on the motherfucking plane in two seconds, Weaver, you’ll live to regret it,” Daniel growled.

I glared at the youngest Hawk. “Haven’t you learned by now your threats don’t scare me?”

Forcing myself to stand taller, I hid the quaking in my bones, the quivering in muscles, the rampant terror scurrying in my blood. “I know where you want to take me, and I refuse.”

Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose. A second later, he cuffed me on the back of the head. “Behave!”

I gritted my teeth against the wash of agony.

“Almasi Kipanga is a fucking treat for the likes of you, Weaver. Get on your knees and show some goddamn appreciation. Otherwise, I’ll rip out your fucking tongue and ensure peace for the rest of the trip.”

“Ah, as I said, there’s no need for violence.” The captain took another step, prying my hand off the railing and tugging me upward. “Come along, my dear. Let’s get you inside. And don’t you worry about visas and things. Leave it to me. Airport control won’t be an issue.”

Vertigo cast the world in monochromatic greys as I swayed toward the captain. “But—”

Cut barrelled past Daniel—reaching the end of his patience. Grabbing my arse, he shoved me upward, forcing me like unwilling livestock up the final steps. “I have your passport, Nila. Get on the plane.” His breath skated over the back of my neck. “And don’t think about refusing again. Got it?”

Gripping the fuselage, I looked over my shoulder. “My passport? How did you—”

He waved a black binder in my face. “Everything is in here. You have no more excuses, and I won’t ask again. Get on the fucking plane or I’ll knock you out and you can wake up when we get there.”
