It was that magical hour where the whole world seemed perfect. Friends catching up after a long day at work. Lovers greeting each other with soft kisses and heated looks. Even families gathered with a bottle of table wine over rapid fire French.

It’s perfect.

I walked along the boulevards until I found a little bar with a blue neon light that read beaux rêves. Sweet Dreams. It was exactly what I needed so I turned down the cobblestone alleyway and tugged on the heavy black door. I stepped inside and instantly the tension left my body. Soft jazz played inside the dimly lit bar. Booths covered in deep blue leather lined the walls on either side of the door while a few tables with two and four chairs dotted the middle space before the long mahogany bar took up the rest of the space. The dark wood and dark leather should’ve made the place seem heavy but it wasn’t. There was a lightness to it that called to me so I settled at the bar. Or maybe it was just that it seemed less pathetic to sit alone at the bar.

Que voulez-vous boire?” The voice was masculine, deep and smooth. Heavenly.

My gaze drifted from the specials on the chalkboard above to the owner of the voice, which was my first mistake. His face was even more beautiful than his musical voice. With his brown hair that looked just a little bit mussed and big mossy green eyes, he was a work of art. His olive toned skin gave him an exotic appeal that I shouldn’t have noticed but it was impossible not to. “Oh, um, right. Je voudrais, a, um bourbon?” That was horrible, from the accent to the words, and I felt my skin warm with embarrassment. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be,” he said with a short laugh. “You ordered it just right. Either that or you asked me if you would like a bourbon.” His face split into an amused grin that drew my gaze to full, pink lips.

I sat taller and looked him right in those mesmerizing green eyes. “Je vourdrais un bourbon.

He gave a short nod, lips still smiling. “Coming right up.”

I ordered my first drink en français and the bartender understood, which was one for the win column. I got this.

He returned and set a glass in front of me half-full of brown liquid. “Autre chose?”

I ran the catalog of French words I knew in my brain and nodded, because I definitely needed something to go with the booze. “Yes. Je prendrai le plateau de fromages et de pâtés.”

He bit back another smile. “One cheese and pâté board coming right up.”

My brows dipped this time at his smile. He was handsome, sure, but he was also a little bit devilish. “Are you doing that on purpose?” He was messing with me. Right?

He turned back, thick dark brows shot up. “Quoi?

“That!” I pointed at him. “You keeping responding in a different language.” I heard rumors about the French but I hoped it wasn’t true. “Is this a mess with the dumb American thing?”

His smile slipped. “Bien sûr que non.” He shook his head, seeming appalled at my accusation. “I am just letting you know that I understand. Would you prefer that I clap each time you speak properly?”

I took a long sip of my drink, finishing off half easily and then folded my arms before I aimed a really good glare at him. “Non. Non, je ne le ferais pas!” I definitely would not like that.

“I didn’t think so. Another bourbon?” His accent in both French and English was incredible. It was like a sultry grownup lullaby that effectively vanquished all of my annoyance.

“Yes please. Another bourbon would be great.”

He watched me for a long time, so long I began to squirm. At first I wondered if I still had paint on my face or in my hair but then I remembered the hot shower and high end French beauty products and I knew it wasn’t that. “I have something perfect for you, if you are bold enough to let me choose for you?”

Bold enough. I recognized the challenge for what it was and I tilted my chin high in the air. “Absolument.”

“Now it is you messing with me.” He grinned as he poured, but I noted a hint of sadness in his eyes. “Here you go. Tell me what you think.”

I accepted the crystal glass, noting the artistry of the cut geometric pieces before I wrapped my hand around it took a sip. “Oh my god!” I didn’t spit it out, thankfully, but my eyes bugged out and I choked on it. “That is…strong,” I finished and then frowned at the glass. “But good. What is it?”

“French rye. American’s always think bourbon is French but it is from your homeland. This,” he pointed to my glass, “is the best of French alcohol.”

It wasn’t bad but it was incredibly strong. I leaned closer and looked left and then right. “Would it be terribly rude or uncouth to ask for it on the rocks?”

He laughed but this time it wasn’t at me, and goodness it went all the way up to those incredible eyes. “Whatever the lady wants.”

I stared at him blatantly because he really was beautiful, but it wasn’t attraction. I mean he was attractive but it was more than that, he was beautiful in that way that made my fingers tingle with the urge to paint him. To sketch him. Anyway I could celebrate his beauty through my art I wanted to.

Badly.

Now.

For the first time in my life, words failed me so I did the only thing that seemed appropriate in the moment, I pressed my lips to hers and let the moment carry me.

A soft whimper escaped Emerald’s lips when our mouths touched at the exact same time her hands landed on my chest, the warmth of her touch penetrated every layer of my skin.

It was an odd sensation, kissing a woman who wasn’t Eve. Who didn’t taste the way Eve did. Emerald’s curls were a stark contrast to her silky straight locks. Everything about the kiss was surreal because I never thought I would kiss another pair of lips but here I was, savoring a pair that were thicker and softer than I was accustomed to. She tasted of cherries instead of peach lip balm.

Emerald’s lips weren’t submissive, she dove right into the kiss as if she wanted it the way I wanted it. Her hands curled into the fabric of the thin t-shirt I slept in, fisting it as if she wanted to make sure I didn’t break the kiss.

As if I could.

Not even ten thousand hours could have dragged our lips apart. Her kiss was more intoxicating than the best French wine, her touch was hotter than the hottest Parisian sun. Every second that our lips were fused together was another second I grew addicted to her touch and her taste. Emerald kissed the way she seemed to do everything, with an immense passion that was impossible to ignore. Her lips moved against mine with a drugging intensity that made my head spin. Her tongue danced with mine so effortlessly as if we’d been kissing for years, diving deep as if she was hungry for every inch of me.

The soft moans she made were enough to unravel the steely resolve that had settled deep in my bones the moment the doctor’s told me my wife, my son, my entire world was gone. The hesitation was gone, vanishing on the breeze that tore through the apartment, replaced by pent up passion that shocked me with its ferocity.

The way I wanted her didn’t just shock me, it scared me. Who was this woman to make me want her this way? Why did she affect me this way when no other woman had? I had been the picture of the faithful, grieving husband since the day I lost her and now it was all gone. Obliterated in one, heartfelt act.

An eternity passed before one of us—Emerald—pulled back, gasping and wide-eyed. Her lips were pink and swollen as they curved up into a slow smile. “That was…wow. One hell of a kiss.”

Her words relaxed me and pulled me out of my head a way nothing else could have in that moment. “It was pretty wow wasn’t it?”

She nodded, a short shock of laughter exploded from her lips. “Yeah,” she sighed. “It was.” Her gaze went from my eyes back to my lips, and then her breath hitched as if she was fighting the urge to kiss me again.

Unfortunately, supremely nasty Serafina truly takes the cake—she makes the worst bridezilla seem like a shy flower girl. But there’s one thing the wedding planner didn’t plan on—being impaled by one of the skewers Baby Cakes uses on their tiered wedding cakes.

MY REVIEW

Influencer-turned-bakery-owner Maddy Montgomery has sold plenty of wedding cakes before, but before she turns one out for her and her fiancé’s wedding, she’ll have to solve a little case of murder . . .

Icing on the Murder is the fourth book in the Baker Street Bakery. While I haven’t read any of the previous books in this series, I still found this book easy to read and follow.

Icing on the Murder is quite the departure from my normal reads, but I found this to be really enjoyable. I really liked the writing style and was thoroughly entertained by the characters. Icing on the Murder has a little bit of everything, from murder to mystery to a dash of romance. Icing on the Murder was my first cozy mystery read and definitely won’t be my last.

*I was provided an ARC copy of this book via the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.*

It was just a birthday. Then everything in her asked, what if.

Simone Harris has always known how to hold it down. For her son. For her clients. For the sports agency she built from scratch. She keeps things running, keeps herself moving, and keeps her heart tucked safely out of reach.

But this birthday feels different. It falls on a leap year, a date that only circles back every so often. A rare kind of day that feels like it arrives exactly when it’s meant to. The kind that makes you pause and ask what you have been pushing through just to keep going. In that stillness, something begins to surface alongside it. Fatigue. Questions. The quiet ache she has learned to ignore.

She is not falling apart. Still, something is shifting. The pressure she has lived under feels heavier than it once did. And as she begins to listen to what her spirit has been trying to say, the past reappears, bringing with it a familiar comfort, unfinished conversations, and a quiet invitation to feel again.

“Everyone gets sick.” She didn’t understand his tone but a moment later it all became clear. “What is this Ty? You think I did something to him? Is that what this is all about?”

He opened his mouth to respond but she didn’t want to hear it. She didn’t want to hear him deny it when they both knew it was the truth. So much for being one of them. She didn’t wait for a response, for him to figure out a way to soften the blow and tell her he didn’t meant it like that. She just threw her keys at him. “See for yourself that I didn’t kill your friend for whatever reason you think I’d do such a thing.” She turned and picked up the first box. It needed to go downstairs.

“Sadie I didn’t mean it like that!” He knew it was no use. She wouldn’t listen, so he took the keys and went to see about his friend.

Four boxes later, Karl was gone and Sadie was nearly finished stacking all the boxes downstairs. She would just finish them now. Hopefully, by the time she got home, Ty would be long gone. She wasn’t in the mood to see anyone right now but she needed to check on Dylan. He had to be sick to just skip out on a day like this.

She locked up and made the quick drive to Dylan’s house, running up the stairs and through the door calling out to him. She went straight up to his bedroom where he lay in a sweaty heap of sheets and blankets. Ty stood to one side of the room, looking concerned. “Dylan! Are you okay?” She felt his face, neck, and chest. He was clammy all over. “How do you feel?”

“He’s sick,” Ty said, very unhelpfully.

Sadie glared at him and then turned her back on him. “Dylan, tell me what you’re feeling.” She began stripping the covers back and bringing him to a sitting position.

“I’m feeling mighty glad you came to save me.” His smile was crooked and his words were slurred.

She gave him a tight smile while trying to keep them both upright. “Of course I came for you Dylan. You’re my guy.”

“Always babe. Now can you make the room stop spinning ‘cause it’s making me feel sick?”

“No problem big guy. I’m all over it.” She wrapped her arms around his waist. “Can you stand?” He tried but he was too wobbly, and her jaws clenched. Ty stood back, no help at all but she said nothing to him. “Okay stand again, but this time put as much of your weight on me as you can.”

This time he stood up but with most of his weight pressed against her. “Alright let’s get you in the bathroom.” They limped to the en suite bathroom and she sat him on the toilet while she ran a bath. “We need to bring down your temperature,” she told him as she flew back into the bedroom, stripping the sheets off the bed and tossing them down the laundry chute.

“Sadie,” he sang off-key over and over. “Where did my Sadie go?”

“He doesn’t sound too good.” Ty rubbed the back of head, sounding worried.

She inhaled a long breath and let it out slowly, keeping her mouth shut. Eventually, he would leave and she could feel good knowing she hadn’t caused any unnecessary drama for Dylan. Checking on the water, she tossed in a few aromatherapy balls to help. “Alright, Dylan we need to get you in there, okay? So I need you to help me. Hang on to me and don’t let go.” She removed his boxers, tossed them out the door, and helped guide him down.

“Ah, feels good.” The guttural sound of satisfaction vibrated inside the bathroom, echoing off the walls as he sank into the water.

She smiled. Luckily he was too big to possibly drown since Ty was no help at all. She found the bath sponge she bought for him under the sink. Unopened because according to him it was ‘girly shit’. Dipping the sponge in the water, she rubbed is face and chest. “We need to get you warm and reduce your fever. Stay put.” Inside the bedroom, she breezed past Ty and grabbed the bed spray and clean linens. The window was open, the bedding fresh and now scented. “Okay,” she muttered to herself thinking what else she would need. “Food, meds, juice. Trixie.” She pulled out her phone and dialed. “Hey Trix. Dylan’s got some type of bug or something and I need to keep an eye on him. Can you grab fresh fruit, tons of vegetables for soup, and meds to reduce fever, help sleep and clear congestion? I’m not sure what else he has because he’s pretty incoherent but grab whatever else you think he might need and I’ll pay you back when you get here.” She disconnected and went back to check on Dylan.

“I could’ve gotten that stuff for him,” Ty yelled from the safety of the bedroom.

She said nothing, just helped Dylan quickly wash so she could get him dressed and back into bed. He needed to rest. “Stand up for me big guy.”

“You think I’m too big?” His words were slurred and she smiled despite her worry.

“Naw, I think you’re just big enough.”

“That’s what she said,” he snickered.

“Very funny,” she grumbled as she quickly dried him off. He was a big guy and required a towel that was just as big and heavy. “Okay we need clothes.”

“I’m alright like this,” he swayed, wrapping his arm around her waist. “I only stopped sleeping naked because I didn’t want to freak you out.”

That was an image she did not need to think about now. Or ever. They walked into the room, him naked and talking nonsense and her trying to keep them both from wiping out on the hardwood floors. “That’s sweet of you Dyl, but it’s your house so make sure you’re comfortable.” She sat him on the bed and grabbed flannel pants and a t-shirt. “While you’re sick though, I have to insist on pajamas.”

MY REVIEW

I definitely need more Evelyn Sola books in my life!

Game Change is smartly written and entertaining. The characters are diverse, real, and easy to relate to. Colin and Brynne stole my heart from their very first interaction. Their connection was intense and unforgettable.  I loved their banter and the will-they/won’t they moments. You can’t help but root for Colin and Brynne as they navigate their way to HEA.

Game Change is a very satisfying and delicious read that’s easily devourable in a single sitting. I loved the tension, chemistry, and workplace drama. And while this is my first book by this author, it most certainly won’t be my last.

“And you think that makes a difference? You come swooping in, take something you didn’t earn, and threaten to fire anyone who isn’t thrilled to have you.”

“Oh, you were thrilled the last time you had me,” I announce.

“Don’t you ever bring that up again, you con man. And for the record, I don’t report to you. Everyone else, maybe, but not me. If you have a problem with that, fire me.”

“Con man? You can’t be serious.”

“I’m very serious. You lied. You pretended to be someone else to gain my trust so you could get me into bed and have this over me.”

I throw my head back and give a humorless laugh. “Really? I didn’t realize I was that good. For the record, I’ve never had to con a woman into sleeping with me, but since you’re so damn delusional, let’s go over what happened. Remember the night at the club? The night where you had your hands all over me. Rubbing my chest and touching my ass. Remember how you pressed your body against mine and said you wanted to go home with me? I asked if you were sure, and you said you were. I took you back, and you made love to me all night. I spent every spare moment with you after that, and now you want to say that was all a lie?”

“It was a lie!” she yells. “And you set it all up. Walking around with no shirt on, flashing your washboard abs. Wearing those ridiculous Crocs so you could appear approachable and smiling like some wanna-be GQ model.”

“So, I asked for it? My outfit made you do it?” I challenge. “It was my fault you asked to go home with me?”

“Don’t you dare use that argument on me, and if you were honest about who you were, I wouldn’t have touched you with a ten-foot pole, but you knew that.”

“I offered to tell you who I was. You’re the one who said no. You wanted to use those stupid code names while on vacation mode.” I put vacation mode in air quotes. “Remember that?”

“No,” she lies. “I don’t remember any of that.”

“And you call me the liar,” I challenge.

“That’s right.”

“Okay, so you fucked me, and now you’re mad about it. Do I have that right? Well, stay mad then.”

“Of course, you would reduce it to just that,” she says, “but on the contrary, Mr. Kincaid, I’m the one who got fucked. And since we’re on the topic, you can go ahead and fuck yourself.” She walks out of my office and slams the door behind her.

“Stop,” I say. “Don’t touch me.” His steps falter, but he doesn’t look away. He seems shocked and hurt by my words. “Don’t you fucking come near me.”

“I didn’t know.” He points to the door. “I didn’t—”

“Bullshit. Please, don’t lie to me. You’ve done enough of that in the past two weeks.”

“What?” he asks. “I’ve never lied to you. I would never. This is—”

“This is what?” I ask when he stops mid-sentence. “This is you stealing my job, Colin Kincaid!” I feel the venom spouting out of me when I speak his name. Everyone knows the Kincaid family. They’re rich and run one of the biggest renewable energy companies in the world.

“I didn’t steal a damn thing,” he hisses, then he catches himself, lowers his voice and says, “He’s been begging me to work for him for years.”

“Then why didn’t you?” I ask. “Why now?”

“Because I’ve been living in California for over a decade, just like I told you when we met. I wanted to move back to the East Coast. He said I’d be running things and wanted a Kincaid in charge.”

“Oh? I’ve never even heard of you before today. He’s never mentioned an architect nephew, and here you are taking the one thing he had promised me.” I point to myself. “You don’t even need this job.
