Review: The Great and Terrible by Gena Showalter

Posted on

When twenty-year-old college dropout Moriah Shaker runs into an empty chapel to escape an unexpected storm, she’s catapulted into another world Wizard of Oz style. Unfortunately, she winds up in the treacherous realm of Hakeldama, a fantastical but brutal land where justice is twisted and innocents pay for crimes committed by the elites—and she’s now marked for death.

On the run and determined to get home, Moriah heads for the City of Lux, where a rumored portal between worlds exists. At her side are the most unlikely of companions. A scrappy hustler, a cranky ex-mayor, and a growing beast-dog. But the one who fascinates her most is Jasher, a heartless executioner who hides a terrible secret. Together, they’ll battle bounty hunters, lethal poppies, and winged monsters. Though Moriah doesn’t yet know it, there’s nothing more dangerous than their forbidden attraction.

MY REVIEW

Moriah certainly isn’t in Kansas anymore and when I say this isn’t your mama’s Wizard of Oz story, I mean you are in for one heck of a wild and twisted ride…

Caught in an unexpected storm, Moriah Shaker runs into an empty chapel to seek shelter. When Moriah comes to, she quickly discovers that not only is she not in Kansas anymore, but the rumors are true; an Oz-style land does exist. But, Hakeldama is nothing like the fairytale stories. This land is brutal and twisted. It’s a place where innocents pay for the crimes of the elites and Moriah has now been marked for death.

Moriah Shaker runs into an empty chapel to escape an unexpected storm, she’s catapulted into another world Wizard of Oz style. Unfortunately, she winds up in the treacherous realm of Hakeldama: a fantastical but brutal land where justice is twisted and innocents pay for crimes committed by the elites—and she’s now marked for death. On the run and more determined than ever to find a way home, Moriah finds herself in the most unlikely company. Together, they’ll battle the unexpected and hopefully find a way out of this mess…

The Great and Terrible is a unique and fascinating take on the Wizard of Oz. And while there are some definite similarities, this story is more mysterious and wicked than one might expect. The Great and Terrible is a merciless tale filled with action and suspense. Even your greatest allies could turn into your enemy. This story will take you on one heck of an adventure and will certainly keep you on your toes. And if all that wasn’t enough to get your heart racing, the budding romance between Moriah and Jasher certainly will.

Filled with secrets, lies, romance, and mythical creatures, this book is not to be missed. With a great cliffhanger ending, The Great and Terrible will leave readers begging for more. I for one, can not wait to see what adventure is in store for Moriah and Jasher next!

Review: Kiss The Girl (Naughty Princess Club #3) by Tara Sivec

Posted on

A struggling antiques collector finds herself falling in love with a millionaire playboy; but can she ever be a part of his world?

Meet the Naughty Princess Club, a series from USA Today bestselling author Tara Sivec that brings readers to Fairytale Lane and the hilarity—and romance—that three women fall into once they decide to strut their stuff and bring on their own happily ever after.

While her friends have broken free of their insecurities, Ariel Waters is struggling to come out of her shell. Her ex-husband took away her voice and her self-confidence, and Ariel is drowning under a sea of debt to afford the alimony she has to pay him. She refuses to ever fall for a man’s charms again, and is determined to make her own way.

When her house and her beloved antiques are taken by the bank after too many missed payments, Ariel finds herself adrift until the infuriatingly charming Eric Sailor comes to her rescue. Although she can’t stand the millionaire playboy, Eric’s kindness and unconditional support reveal hidden depths and a love that Ariel never imagined she could find.

But there are outside influences who will stop at nothing to keep them apart; can Ariel and Eric weather the storm and find a way to be together?

My Review

“Seeing you broken and hurting and sad is like having someone stick a fucking knife in my chest. I don’t like it. So, if pissing you off removes that look from your face like your whole world is imploding and there’s nothing you can do to stop it, good.”

“I don’t need love poems or candlelit dinners or a dozen roses. If you want to woo me, bring me to the largest flea market in twenty counties, with the biggest collection of antiques you’ve ever seen, which only comes around once every three years.”

“If he can handle my crazy, looks like this fairy tale bullshit should be a piece of cake.”

Man, oh man, have I been waiting for this book. I fell in love with Ariel from the moment I started The Naughty Princess Club Series. Her smart mouth kept me on my toes and I admired the devotion she had to her friends. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Kiss The Girl and see what Ariel’s story had in store for us…

When we first meet up with Ariel, she’s struggling. Her confidence has been taken away and she’s struggling to make ends meet. And just when she thinks things couldn’t possibly get any worse, she finds herself evicted from her house. She’s determined to do things her way, but knows when to admit defeat. The last thing she wants to do is count on another man, but it turns out that Eric might be just what she needs. He may drive her crazy, but there is so much more to Eric than Ariel ever knew…..

Kiss The Girl was a total riot. I just loved Ariel’s snarky attitude and could not wait to see what she said next. She really had no filter and didn’t care what others thought. She is fierce and independent. But, she’s just like the rest of us. She has fears and insecurities of her own and it will take a strong man to break down her sky high walls. And Eric…boy did he give Ariel a run for her money. She totally didn’t see him coming. Eric is not only charming and flirty, but fiercely loyal and one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. He doesn’t mind Ariel’s crazy and isn’t about to let her scare him away. I loved watching these two together. I loved their banter and interactions and could not wait to see how they would challenge one another next. And the sparks!! OMG! The Sparks! They were off the charts. The tension so thick, you just couldn’t wait for these two to attack one another!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! Kiss The Girl was fun, entertaining and just the right amount of sexy. Ariel and Eric’s story was everything I was looking for and was totally worth the wait. If you’re looking for a fun, laugh out loud romantic comedy with a fairytale twist, I highly recommend checking this book out.
