MY REVIEW

Talk about one crazy read! Keep Your Friends Close starts off with a bang and never looks back.

Told from not only dual point of view but also, past and present tense, Keep Your Friends Close follows the story of Mary. Mary’s life has been quite the tailspin since leaving her husband. She’s isolated, alone, and in desperate need of a friend. When Mary meets Willa one day at the playground, she feels as though her prayers have been answered. Finally, she has someone on her side, someone she can turn to. But when Mary shares her darkest fears about her ex, Willa disappears without a trace…

Keep Your Friends Close had me hooked from the very first page. I was completely invested in Mary’s story and couldn’t put it down. Mary’s life had been completely turned upside down and I could not wait to see how everything would come together in the end.

This story was deliciously twisty and left me with a million questions. Just when I thought I had a handle on things, I would be thrown for another loop. I loved all the coincidences, drama, and moments that left me shaking my head.

Not gonna lie, I’m normally a romance-heavy reader, and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I was glued to the pages, right until the very end. Keep Your Friends Close is my first book by this author and I can not wait to read more from her in the future.

Review: Bright and Deadly Things by Lexie Elliott

A remote back-to-basics mountaintop retreat in the French Alps turns deadly as an Oxford fellow finds herself in the crosshairs of her late husband’s dangerous secrets.

The Chalet des Anglais should be the ideal locale for recently-widowed Oxford don Emily to begin cutting through the fog of her grief. With no electricity, running water, or access by car, the rustic chalet nestled at the foot of the verdant, snow-topped Alps should afford Emily both time and space to heal. Joining her will be a collection of friends from the university, as well as other fellows, graduates, and undergraduates.

Something feels off, though—heightening Emily’s existing grief-induced anxiety. Before even making it to the airport, she’s unnerved by a break-in at her home. Once at the chalet, tension amongst the guests is palpable. Her friends and colleagues are behaving oddly, and competition for a newly opened position has introduced a streak of meanness into the otherwise relaxing getaway. As hostilities grow, Emily begins to wonder if the chalet’s dark history has cast a shadow over the retreat. In the salon, a curious grandfather clock looms, the only piece of furniture to survive a deadly blaze a century ago. As its discordant bell begins to invade everyone’s dreams, someone very real has been searching through Emily’s things and attempting to hack into her computer.

When a student disappears, Emily realizes that she’d better separate friend from foe, and real from imagined—or the next disappearance may be her own.

MY REVIEW

A remote back-to-basics mountaintop retreat in the French Alps turns deadly as an Oxford fellow finds herself in the crosshairs of her late husband’s dangerous secrets. With a line like that, how can one not be intrigued?

Bright and Deadly Things is quite the departure from my normal reads and I couldn’t have been happier to check this book out. When we first meet up with Emily, she is recently widowed and is trying to find her way through her grief. Desperately needing time and space to heal, she finds herself at a retreat in the French Alps with a collection of friends from the university. Almost immediately, something feels off. A series of events fills her with anxiety and leaves her with a ton of burning questions. But, when a student disappears, Email realizes you must separate friend from foe and she might be next…

Overall, I thought this book was a really interesting read. I was intrigued from the moment I picked this book up and couldn’t wait to read more. I thought the plot was clever and enjoyed the odd characters. I thought the author did a great job weaving a web of mystery and suspense, keeping readers on their toes. My only issue with this story was the pacing. Pacing can be a bit of a double-edged sword for me personally. I don’t necessarily mind a slower pace, but the pacing in this story was a bit off for me, and I definitely found it to be a distraction.

All in all, Bright and Deadly Things is an interesting mystery that I couldn’t wait to uncover. Lexie Elliott is a new author to me and I look forward to discovering more from her in the future.

MY REVIEW

Where Love Lies is an intriguing thriller that will keep you guessing right until the very end…

When we first meet up with Rain and her daughter Paige, Rain is looking forward to a fresh start in a new town. But when Heston literally crashes into her life, he turns her entire world upside down and gives her way more than what she bargained for.

Where Love Lies is a book best to go in blind with. It starts off as your typical second-chance romance but is filled heavily with mystery and intrigue. The author did an amazing job setting the stage and pulling her readers into the story. I for one couldn’t put this book down and found myself completely immersed in the story. I had to know what would happen next and really enjoyed trying to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together.

If I had to make one complaint, it would be that I thought the ending was a bit rushed. It felt like certain things escalated too quickly and I think if there had been a few more chapters, it would have made the ending feel and flow better.

All in all, this book was an enjoyable thriller that certainly kept this reader on their toes. Even though I had an issue with the overall ending of the story, it’s still a solid read and I’m glad to have checked it out.

These Violent Roots, an all-new psychological thriller from New York Times bestselling author Nicole Williams is available now!

Grace Wolff spends her days fighting monsters, and her nights hiding from her own. As a public prosecutor in the sexual crimes unit, she knows more about rapists, pedophiles, and deviants than most people dare to consider.

Dr. Noah Wolff is as acquainted with monsters as his wife. While Grace dedicates her career to putting violent men away, Noah is more interested in rehabilitating them. A renowned psychiatrist specializing in sexual deviance, he counsels a burgeoning number of court-appointed patients wrestling with evil in its vilest form.

But in her quest to track down the killer, Grace faces an ethical impasse. As a steward of the law, she has an obligation to seek justice for the murders. As a human being, she accepts that “innocent until proven guilty” is laden with loopholes criminals slip through too easily, and too often.

About Nicole
Biographies are impossible for me to write without landing somewhere in the realm of lame. Which is ironic since I’m a writer attempting to, you know, do what I do and write. For whatever reason though, trying to sum up who I am is enough to make me rock myself into a psychiatric-something in a dark corner.

I could try explaining what I love: books, writing, adventures, the outdoors, animals, my family, my friends. I could list what I don’t love: hate, needles, narrow-mindedness, pantyhose, celery. I could go into my background and my sources of inspiration, sprinkling throughout witty bits of commentary and the expected author-fare of a few words that make a person scratch their head and reach for a dictionary. But the true biography of who I am is penned on the pages of my books, hidden between the words. Where I’ve been, who I am, where I’m going—it’s all there.
At the end of the day, I’m an open book.

MY REVIEW

Hidden is an exciting and fast paced thriller that is sure to keep readers on their toes….

One of the first things that drew me into this book was the cover. It was absolutely stunning. I loved the colors and style. I certainly wanted to find out more. Hidden is my first book by Laura Griffin and it most certainly won’t be my last.

Hidden follows the story of Bailey and Jacob. From the moment I picked up this book, I was completely and totally sucked in. I was pretty annoyed that I had things to do and couldn’t sit and devour this book like I had wanted. That being said, I took advantage of every free minute I had and couldn’t help but get lost in this story.

Bailey is an investigative reporter, who turns up at a crime scene looking for answers. She looks to the lead detective Jacob, hoping that he can shine some light on the case. However, this murder is unlike anything he’s dealt with before. Bailey isn’t afraid to follow her instincts to uncover the truth, even if that means putting herself in harms way. In the end, Jacob and Bailey find themselves searching for a ruthless killer. Will they find their suspect before it’s too late??? There’s only one way to find out…

Hidden was a fantastic read from beginning to end. I loved the mystery and suspense of the story. There was never a dull moment and I was kept on the edge of my seat. The game of cat and mouse kept me totally engrossed in this story and I couldn’t wait to see how all the pieces would come together in the end. I really enjoyed the chemistry and romantic moments between Bailey and Jacob. I think it added a lot to the story and gave some much needed relief to the suspenseful plot.

All in all, I’m glad to have checked this book out. It had my heart racing the entire time and I’m excited to check more out from this author in the future.

MY REVIEW

A Madness of Sunshine is a book that I kept seeing everywhere. Not only does it have a stunning cover, but it’s also author Nalini Singh’s first dabble into Contemporary Suspense. I am a big fan of her Paranormal Romances, so I just knew I had to grab this book and check it out.

A Madness of Sunshine follows the story of Anahera. After the passing of her cheating husband, Anahera returns to the one place she never thought she’d go back to. Anahera hopes that her return home will give her some perspective on life and heal her wounds. However, soon after Anahera returns home, a young woman disappears without a trace. The disappearance rocks Anahera’s small town and brings forward secrets that are better left unsaid….

A Madness of Sunshine had me instantly intrigued. The characters had an air of mystery about them and I was intrigued by the small town Anahera called home. Everyone seemed to have a secret, some darker than others. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t wait to see how the story would come together. The disappearance of a local girl brought unexpected truths to the surface. I enjoyed trying to solve the mystery of this story. I figured some things out right away, but there were still some twists that took me by surprise.

A Madness of Sunshine is an exciting thriller that is filled with mystery, intrigue, betrayal and lots of twists and turns. There are some glimpses of romance to take the edge off of the intensity, but this story is definitely not romance driven. I think the author did a great job with her first dabble into this genre and I hope that she’ll write more thrillers in the future.

VERITY TEASER THREE.jpg

Excerpt:

“What are you wearing?” Corey is staring down at my shirt, perplexed, just now noticing it despite having spent the last fifteen minutes with me.

I look down at my oversized shirt. For a moment, I forgot how ridiculous I look. “I spilled coffee on my other shirt this morning and had to change.”

“Whose shirt is that?”

I shrug. “Probably yours. It was in my closet.”

“You left your house in that? There wasn’t something else you could have worn?”

“It doesn’t look high fashion?” I’m being sarcastic, but he doesn’t catch it.

He makes a face. “No. Is it supposed to?”

Such an ass. But he’s good in bed, like most assholes.

I’m actually relieved when the conference room door opens and a woman walks in. She’s followed, almost comically, by an older man walking so closely behind her, he bumps into the back of her when she stops.

“Goddammit, Barron,” I hear her mumble.

I almost smile at the idea of Goddammit Barron actually being his name.

Jeremy enters last. He gives me a small nod that goes unnoticed by everyone else.

The woman is dressed more appropriately than I am on my best day, with short black hair and lipstick so red, it’s a little jarring at nine thirty in the morning. She seems to be the one in charge as she reaches for Corey’s hand, and then mine, while Goddammit Barron looks on. “Amanda Thomas,” she says. “I’m an editor with Pantem Press. This is Barron Stephens, our lawyer, and Jeremy Crawford, our client.”

Jeremy and I shake hands, and he does a good job of pretending we didn’t share an extremely bizarre morning. He quietly takes the seat across from me. I try not to look at him, but it’s the only place my eyes seem to want to travel. I have no idea why I’m more curious about him than I am about this meeting.

Amanda pulls folders out of her briefcase and slides them in front of Corey and me.

“Thank you for meeting with us,” she says. “We don’t want to waste your time, so I’ll cut right to the chase. One of our authors is unable to fulfill a contract due to medical reasons, and we’re in search of a writer with experience in the same genre who may be interested in completing the three remaining books in her series.”

I glance at Jeremy, but his stoic expression doesn’t hint at his role in this meeting.

“Who is the author?” Corey asks.

“We’re happy to go over the details and terms with you, but we do ask that you sign the non-disclosure agreement. We would like to keep our author’s current situation out of the media.”

“Of course,” Corey says.

I acquiesce, but I say nothing as we both look over the forms and then sign them. Corey slides them back to Amanda.

“Her name is Verity Crawford,” she says. “I’m sure you’re familiar with her work.”

Corey stiffens as soon as they mention Verity’s name. Of course we’re familiar with her work. Everyone is. I hazard a glance in Jeremy’s direction. Is Verity his wife? They share a last name. He said downstairs that his wife is a writer. But why would he be in a meeting about her? A meeting she isn’t even here for?

“We’re familiar with the name,” Corey says, holding his cards close.

“Verity has a very successful series we would hate to see go unfinished,” Amanda continues. “Our goal is to bring in a writer who is willing to step in, finish the series, complete the book tours, press releases, and whatever else is normally required of Verity. We plan to put out a press release introducing the new co-writer while also preserving as much of Verity’s privacy as possible.”
