OF FLAME AND FATE Excerpt

Copyright © 2017 Cecy Robson

I’m shoved into a cold room where a band of bloodsucking fiends tear off my clothes. Their long nails graze my skin as their master watches, his cold gray eyes glinting with malice.

“Son of a bitch,” I say, smacking Edith Anne’s hand away when she cops a feel. “The demon’s in my leg, not my tit!”

There’s something you don’t say every day, but then that’s why humans are safe in the world and weird gals like me are stuck with demons burrowing under their skin.

“Just making sure,” Edith adds with a wink.

I’m ready to punch her in the face, except I’m too busy cringing at the thing crawling beneath the length of my shin, its spindly insectoid appendages stretching the skin as it curls up and over my knee cap.

“Get it out of me!” I screech, growing nauseous with each numbing tug it creates beneath the underlying tissue.

“We’re trying,” Agnes Concepcion snaps, like I’m somehow inconveniencing her by having an evil being claw its way through me.

Her tiny plaid skirt smacks against my hip as she shoves me into a massive glass and tile shower. Three other vamps, dressed like naughty Catholic schoolgirls (don’t get me started) follow us in, bottles of champagne tight in their grips.

“What the hell?” I ask, kicking as if I can somehow shake this thing loose, and certain the booze is to celebrate my grisly death.

Bottles of champagne open with a pop, the naughty Catholics pouring the bubbly over my breasts, back, and ass. This isn’t real. This is something out of a bad porno and somehow I’m the star.

But as the fluid reaches my thigh the lump with the creepy legs bounces, pulling at the muscle it’s crawling over, squirming to the left then right, trying find its way around the torrent of liquid they’re pelting me with.

“Don’t let it reach her heart,” Master Vampire Misha Aleksandr orders from the opposite side of the bathroom.

“What’s it going to do to my heart?” My head whips back and forth when none of the vamps answer. “It’s going eat my freaking heart isn’t it?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Agnes mutters, adjusting her tiny librarian glasses as she angles the bottle she’s holding.

“Okay . . .” I begin.

“It needs your heart to nest and lay its eggs,” she explains.

What?”

“But yeah, then the hatchlings will munch on your heart like raw steak,” Edith adds. She reels me around when additional vamps swoop in with cases of wine, drenching my chest with more alcohol.

She seems to be having fun. I’m mostly trying not to hurl and wondering how the hell this happens to me.

Agnes is more focused. She drips the wine just above the demon, forcing it back down my leg. “Quiesco,” she says, her tone as sharp and commanding. “Quiesco.”

My body shudders as the demon scurries downward. Its movement doesn’t hurt, surprising since I think it has pinchers, but the yanking motion is unnerving, like getting stitches while under anesthesia. My head flops forward and my vision starts to swim.

“I don’t feel good,” I mumble.

Agnes slaps me, the sting of the strike causing my eyes to whip open. “Don’t fall asleep.” She slaps me again when my eyelids flutter and close. “Taran, the poison the demon is spewing is numbing your skin and making you drowsy, if you succumb to it the alcohol won’t work and the demon will take you.”

Again, her palm whips across my face. “Stay awake so we can cut this thing out of you.”

I slap her back, knocking her glasses askew. “I’m awake, damn it.”

She smirks because she hits harder and maybe because she likes it, too. She returns to my leg when the vamp behind her hands her another bottle of champagne. “Quiesco,” she whispers against my leg, her breath hot against my cooling skin.

My head falls forward as I start to go under. This time, Edith smacks me.

“God damn it,” I hiss, my right arm quaking and threatening to release my flame.

“I was just taking my turn,” she replies defensively.

Her gaze locks on my arm. She eases away as a spark of blue and white escapes from my fingertips, giving me and my power ample space as the surrounding vamps shower me with alcohol.

“Master,” Agnes says, ignoring us as she concentrates on my thigh. “It’s settling. I need the knife.”

“The wolves are bringing it,” he replies.

“The wolves?” I ask. Okay. Now I’m wide awake.

COUPLE: Cora & Jack

TROPES: Reunited Lovers

SYNOPSIS:

Once upon a time, Cora Landers was America’s Sweetheart and destined to be the Next Big Thing in Hollywood—but that was before her sex tape ruined her image and eliminated her contracts. These days, instead of being an A-lister, she’s divorce attorney to the A-listers. So when her ex—and fellow sex tape star—Jack shows up, needing her expertise, she wants nothing to do with it.

Jack McArthur might have costarred in that sex tape, but he didn’t share Cora’s fate—instead of tanking his career, the tape skyrocketed it. Now, as one of Hollywood’s most buzzed about new directors, Jack has everything to lose—especially when he wakes up after a friend’s bachelor party gone wrong to find that he’s apparently married a woman he’s never met before…and now can’t find. Desperate, he goes to the only person who he knows can help—Cora.

Cora reluctantly agrees to help Jack—both because he’s offering an absurd amount of money and because she loves seeing him as a disadvantage for once. Neither of them anticipate the very real problem of their being unable to keep their hands off each other—or that Jack’s accidental marriage might be anything but accidental. With both her heart and career on the line—again—Cora has to decide if she’s going to take the high road or leave Jack hanging in the wind the same way he left her twelve years ago.

So dramatic.

Maybe that was why he kissed her. The need to regain a little bit control, even in this tiny corner of his life. Or at least, that was what he told himself as he cupped the side of her face and leaned down to brush his lips across hers.

Jack’s good intentions didn’t last past the first touch.

Cora made a soft sound of pleasant surprise. He slid his hands over her hips and up her back, pulling her against his chest, and she came willingly. She went up on her tiptoes and traced her tongue along the seam of his lips.

As if he needed any further encouragement.

Jack kept one hand at the small of her back and cupped the back of her head, tilting her face up so he could take the kiss deeper. Harder. Twelve years and the taste of her still haunted him in the moments between waking and sleep, the memory of her body against his a sensation he couldn’t have erased if he’d tried.

And he hadn’t tried.

He took one step and then another, turning them so her back bumped the side of the house. Their harsh breathing matched the sound of the surf in the background, the wind concealing it from anyone who might be listening. Jack kissed along her jaw. “I missed the fuck out of you, Cora.”

“You can’t miss something you never really had.” The breathlessness in her voice barely lessened the sting of the words.

He lifted his head. A flush spread across her chest and cheeks, her lips extra pouty from his kisses, her eyes a little too wide. “Wrong. I had you. Maybe only for a night, but you were mine for those hours—just like I was yours.”

“I only had sex with you for the damn tape.”

He let go of her, just like she obviously wanted him to, and stepped back. “The first time? Sure. How the fuck do you rationalize that second time?”

TITLE: Animal Attraction

SERIES: Hot in Hollywood  book 2

RELEASES: Sept 19, 2017

PUBLISHER:  Amazon Publishing

GENRE: Romance

COUPLE: Brooklyn & Levi

TROPES: Enemies to Lovers

SYNOPSIS:

A private investigator might not be as glamorous as Brooklyn James had expected, but it pays the bills. Or at least it used to. In dire financial straits, she no longer has the luxury of saying no to jobs if she wants to pay her bills—which is how she ends up in a tree, spying on a billionaire who’s accused of dognapping. Not her finest moment.

Levi Turnbull made his fortune by creating tech that melds exercise with video games. It sounded great at the time, but now he’s got more money than he knows what to do with and he’s bored out of his mind waiting for the next game to launch. When he realizes a neighbor has been neglecting his dog, he takes matters into his own hands—by taking the dog. If he’s been trolling the neighbor ever since with hilarious fliers around the area… Well, he’s only human. When he finds a pretty redhead trespassing on his property in search of the missing dog, he sees the ultimate distraction until the launch.

Brooklyn initially agrees to a date in order to get close enough to Levi to find evidence of his dognapping—but that motivation gets complicated when they end up in bed together. She’s unable to resist his charm, and as they grow closer, Brooklyn can’t avoid the truth—not only did Levi steal a million dollar dog…he’s in danger of stealing her heart, too.

Excerpt from Animal Attraction

“Oh, Brooklyn, something tells me you’re absolutely unforgettable.” The joking slipped away from his expression, leaving only intensity in its wake. The man looked at her as if he wanted to set her on the table between them, yank off her pants and feast on her right there. His wolfish grin had her stomach doing a slow turn. “You’re interested.”

“I’d have to be blind not to be. I mean…look at you.” She waved a hand in his direction even as she cursed herself for speaking without thinking—again. “Were you a lumberjack in your past life? Or maybe Sasquatch’s brother?”

He boomed out a laugh. “Why confine yourself? Maybe I was both.”

Damn it. She wasn’t supposed to like him. Brooklyn took a hasty sip of her mimosa. “How does one come from a family of Sasquatch to being a billionaire dog thief?”

“Alleged dog thief.”

She nodded to concede his point, even though she was one-hundred percent convinced he was the one responsible. It wasn’t what Fisk said as much as the way Levi seemed to conduct his life—the rules were flexible. What she was curious about now was why he’d stolen a million-dollar dog. It wasn’t like he didn’t have the funds to just go buy himself a damn dog without breaking the law. “How many animals do you own currently?”

Levi grinned. “Two dogs, four or five cats, and a very patient iguana.”

That was a whole lot in the way of animals. She frowned. “Four or five cats? You don’t know how many cats you own?” His house was big, but that was just ridiculous.

His smile widened. “Eric is particular. Some days I’m the boss. Most days, he’s the boss.”

“You are…very strange.”

“You aren’t much of an animal person, are you?” He said it like he was inviting her to confess a dirty secret.

Brooklyn shook her head. “I don’t dislike animals. I just don’t have time for them or a burning desire to have one. I work weird hours. I’m barely responsible enough to feed myself, let alone myself and another creature.” Why am I telling him this? I’m supposed to be pumping him for information, not spilling my guts.

“Hmm.” Levi snapped his fingers. “Cat.”

She shook her head. “No, I literally just said that I can’t manage an animal.”

“Yeah, I got that.” He leaned forward, his broad shoulders dominating their small table. “You. You’re the human version of a cat.”

She blinked. “Uh, okay.”

“Run with this. You do your own thing, you like your independence, but if you came home to a warm meal every night, that would be pure bliss.”

That sounded kind of nice. She frowned. “Do you make a habit of categorizing people into animals?”

“Definitely. It’s important to know what a person needs in order to manage the situation to benefit me.”

God, he was incorrigible. She leaned forward despite herself, drawn in by the sheer magnetism of his presence. “And what would benefit you in this particular situation?”

“You. In my bed.” He glanced at his watch. “In roughly forty-five minutes.”

My Best Friend’s Ex by Meghan Quinn
Publication Date: June 1st, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

When I found an eviction notice taped on my apartment door, I had two options: find a comfortable cardboard box to call home, or move in with Tucker Jameson.

Seeing that cardboard makes me feel itchy, I chose the latter. Which shouldn’t be that big of a deal since Tucker is one of my good friends. And because he’s still pining after his ex-girlfriend and I’m trying to finish my nursing degree, there is nothing to worry about in the romance department, making my last semester an easy one to conquer.

Boy, was I wrong.

Rules are set, dinners are made, conversations are had, and a shirtless, swoony roommate walks around in nothing but a pair of black briefs, ruining me for every other man.

Before I know it, I turn into a panting, lust-filled woman begging for Tucker to kiss me, touch me, and show me exactly what is hiding under those briefs.

But with great orgasms, comes great consequences.

Tucker might be my friend and roommate but he’s also my best friend’s ex-boyfriend, making him completely off-limits. At least that’s what my brain is telling me, my heart is speaking an entirely different language.

Excerpt:

“Morning,” Tucker’s deep voice rattles off the cabinets. It’s his morning voice, deeper, throatier—if that makes sense—and I hate to admit it, because he’s just my friend, but sexier.

Once my pupils adjust to the light, I take Tucker in. He’s standing in front of the stove, rubber spatula in hand, wearing a white long-sleeve Henley shirt, the top two buttons undone, a pair of worn jeans with a few paint stains on them, and tan work boots. Sweet Jesus, he makes construction look good. Strap a tool belt around his waist and stick him in front of a camera for the benefit of all womankind.

“Morning,” I say in reply, using the counter to help hold up my tired body. “You’re up early. What time do you have to go into work?”

“Around seven thirty. I like to get an early start before the boys come in.” He looks me up and down, a small smile at the corner of his lips. “You look good.” He motions around his head with his hand. “I really like what you did with your hair.”

I turn toward the window in the kitchen and check out my reflection. Sure enough, my long brown hair looks like a lion’s mane poofed out and framing my face with an abundance of volume. Beautiful.

There is no use in taming it, so I leave my hair as is and turn back toward Tucker. “Not many people can get this kind of height while sleeping.” I pretend to fluff my hair.

“Impressive.” He chuckles and then points to the coffee maker with the spatula. “Coffee is done, mugs are above in the cabinet. Grab me a cup, will ya? Eggs will be done shortly, bacon is warming in the oven.”

I do as directed, thinking it’s kind of cute how he’s including me in on his little morning breakfast. “I didn’t even know you had eggs. I was expecting to hit up Dunkin’ Donuts or Tim Horton’s this morning.”

He turns off the stove and reaches for two plates from the dish rack. “I went to Walmart this morning. Picked up a few things.”

“This morning?” I pour two cups of coffee and turn toward him. “What time did you wake up?”

“Four thirty,” he answers casually. “Got a quick run in, did some weights, took a shower and then went to Walmart.” He fills our plates with bacon and eggs and then nods toward the dining room, plates and silverware in hand. “I have a surprise.”

I follow him to the dining room where he flips on the light and reveals a card table fold-out dining set.

“You got a table.” I chuckle, loving that it’s a fold-out card table with matching chairs. Anything is better than the floor.

“And placemats,” he adds, as he lifts two plastic placemats from one of the chairs. “The options were bleak so I went with dinosaurs for me and Trolls for you. Given the look of your morning hair, Trolls was the right choice.” Clever bastard. He sets them on the table and then puts our plates on top of them.

God, it’s too freaking cute. Chuckling, I take a seat and hand him his coffee. “Look at you getting all domestic. I never thought you would be a placemat kind of man, I stand corrected.”

He rests a napkin on his legs, which are spread drastically, almost the length of the table and leans over to fork some eggs into his mouth. “Didn’t want our food to damage the plastic of this high-class table.” I love the humor in his voice, it reminds me of all the good times we had, before the end of his relationship with Sadie.

“Smart man, you want this table to last.”

“Of course, you don’t see fine furniture like this in houses anymore. Everything has to be so sturdy. What ever happened to rickety furniture and living through a meal with the threat of your food possibly kissing the floor at any point in time?”

“The horror,” I joke.

He looks up at me. Some of his hair is still wet from his shower. Pointing his fork at me he says, “Are you ready to be schooled?”

“Schooled on what?” I take a bite of bacon and my stomach jumps in excitement for finally rewarding it for waking up early. All right, I will admit it, getting out of bed was a smart idea.

“It’s Monday, babe. DJ Hot Cock has his song picked and ready to show you what real music is.”

“When was my music taste ever questioned? I like good music.”

“We’ll see.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. I watch as he flips through it until he lands on the song he wants to introduce me to. He presses play and sets his phone on the table. The light pickings of a guitar fill the small dining room. I don’t recognize the song, but I like the sound of it so far.

Just as I’m settling in to the sweet pickings of a guitar, the distinct voice of Zac Brown chimes in. I’ve known Tucker for loving EMO growing up, so his choice in a country song is very surprising to me, but when I look up at him, pure hometown country boy sitting across from me, it makes perfect sense.

And then the lyrics hit me. My Old Man. Zac sings about his father, hoping he’s proud of the man he’s become. I’m transported back to a dreary day in Whitney Point, where we grew up, when Sadie called me one Saturday morning. I was getting ready for the day. We were in middle school. Tucker’s dad was killed by a head-on collision, the dad Tucker just reconnected with, the dad Tucker had plans on moving in with to get away from his neglectful mom. Those next few days—and weeks—were a whirlwind of sorrow. Attending his funeral, my first ever funeral, seeing the look of devastation on Tucker’s face, wondering what he might be feeling, trying to channel his hurt, it was so much to take on as a teenager.

Glancing up, I take in Tucker’s expression. He’s lost in the music, in the words, just like me. When the song ends, I lean over and place my hand on his, our eyes meet and there is an unspoken understanding between us. I don’t have to say anything about his dad, about the tragedy we went through so many years ago together as friends. It’s all said between this silent exchange.
