Book Review – Beautiful Oblivion (Maddox Brothers #1) by Jamie McGuire

Posted on

Like many, many others I have been waiting for-FREAKIN-ever for this book to come out. I enjoyed Beautiful Disaster (despite the feminist side of me dying more and more with each chapter I read), and was hanging out to get to know the rest of the Maddox brothers.

Beautiful Oblivion is Trent’s story. Trent is Travis’ older brother and the son that their father depends on to help out around the house. He lives at home and takes care of the family (mostly his younger brother and father). He is the family’s solid and reliable brother. However, he is still a Maddox and when he sets his sights on high-school crush Camille Camlin, he’s not taking No for an answer. One little glitch, like Cami having a boyfriend, won’t stop him from finally getting what he’s been wanting for years.

Cami’s life has been anything but sunshine and roses. Growing up as the eldest of three brothers she often bore the brunt of her alcoholic fathers verbal abuse. After a lifetime of taking the blame to protect her mother and brothers, Cami has learned to be resilient and determined and she won’t be charmed by a Maddox brother, despite his best efforts. However, Trent is not giving Cami up without a fight. What he doesn’t know is that Cami has a HUGE secret that she has been hiding from him. The path of true love never did run smoothly…

No doubt about it, Jamie McGuire does an excellent job of creating characters that evoke emotion, good or bad. Cami was a strong, independent woman and I really enjoyed seeing her stand her ground with Trent and draw a firm line about what was acceptable behavior and what was not. And God help him if he crossed that line – Cami was fierce!

“I was just thinking now was as good a time as any to acknowledge that you’re perfect and it wouldn’t suck if you fell madly in love with me anytime soon.”
“I have a boyfriend.”
“Speed bump.”

Trent was a typical Maddox brother, alpha to the core, however he was missing that slightly crazy edge that Travis had. For some readers this will be a very, very good thing. Let’s face it, Travis was kinda scary. But for others, that slightly out of control side of Travis’ personality is what kept things exciting in Beautiful Disaster. Personally, I was glad about this because it created a point of difference between the brothers personalities. However, I just couldn’t help shaking the feeling that something was missing in Beautiful Oblivion. I enjoyed the characters and loved the surprise twist that came at the end when Cami’s secret was finally revealed but I’m not sure? It was just missing the spark that made Beautiful Disaster such an additive story.

Overall though, I still enjoyed this story. I was crossing my fingers that things would work out for Trent and Cami and loved that they got their happy ending. There were a few things in this book that were still unresolved in the end so I’m wondering if there is more of this story to be told. But whether it’s a continuation of Trent and Cami’s story or a new Maddox brother that we get to meet next, it’s bound to be an interesting read!

“I don’t want the whole story. I just want you.”
