“This is the kind of great, big, epic horror novel we got back in the ’80s that came out swinging for the fences and left everything on the field. Welcome back, you shaggy, bloody monster of a book!”—Grady Hendrix

Review: Need by Joelle Charbonneau

need

“No one gets something for nothing. We all should know better.”

Teenagers at Wisconsin’s Nottawa High School are drawn deeper into a social networking site that promises to grant their every need . . . regardless of the consequences. Soon the site turns sinister, with simple pranks escalating to malicious crimes. The body count rises. In this chilling YA thriller, the author of the best-selling Testing trilogy examines not only the dark side of social media, but the dark side of human nature.

My Review

I fell in love with this author’s work when I read the Testing trilogy, so when I heard that she was writing a new book, I could not wait to read it. And let me tell you, she does not disappoint.

Need is one of those stories that you read the synopsis and you know it’s going to scare you. It examines the darker side of social media and human nature. Need follows the story of some Nottawa High School students who are captivated by a social networking site that promises to cater to their every need; no matter what the cost. Sounds like the perfect set up for a great horror film, doesn’t it. Add in the fact that people are suddenly turning up dead, this site is turning out to be more than what anyone bargained for.

Need is fast-paced and told from multiple points of view. The story-line is unique and captivating. It will take you on one crazy, heart-pounding, thrill ride. There is never a dull moment and you will certainly be on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next. I know I am being a bit vague with this review, but this is one of those books that should be experienced and not spoiled.

I loved the ending. I don’t know if there will be another book or not. I’m usually not a fan of open-ended endings. However, this ending really works. This one gives you all the feels. When I got to it, I was left with almost an evil smile on my face. I hope there is another book, because I would love to see what happens next. However, if there isn’t another book, I will be ok with that.

At the end, you will find yourself asking, “How far will you go to get what you NEED”.
