Review: Resisting The Moon (Royal Shifters #2) by L.P. Dover

The past was pain.
The present unclear.

For Tyla Rand, her future couldn’t be bleaker. Death follows her everywhere, especially to those she loves. Being a member of the royal pack, she believes her time of happiness will come. That is, until wolves from her old pack show up missing. Her mission is to find them, but she won’t be going alone.

Sebastian Lyall, a true born royal and the one man Tyla loathes, has offered to help in her quest. Their journey not only brings out their true desires, but attracts the attention of another, someone from Tyla’s past. However, nothing is as it seems. Death is not done with her and now he wants her to pay. He won’t be satisfied until he’s taken everything away . . . including those she loves.

My Review

Resisting The Moon is the second book in the Royal Shifters series, but it can totally be read as a stand-alone.

Resisting The Moon follows the story of Sebastian and Tyla. Tyla sees no hope in her future. She is surrounded by death and even her family can’t be spared from that terrible outcome. She hopes that one day things will turn around. However her hope quickly flies out the window when members of her old pack start going missing. The last thing on Tyla’s mind is finding her true mate. Sebastian is a true royal and knows what he wants. He knows that Tyla is his true mate and can’t wait to open her eyes to how good they can be together. So, naturally when Tyla sets off to find out what’s going on with her old pack, Sebastian accompanies her. But, their journey will bring them more than they bargained for. Will Tyla and Sebastian give into their desires and finally become true mates? Will Tyla ever find out what is happening with her old pack??

Overall, I really enjoyed Resisting The Moon. It was well written and entertaining. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story. It keep things interesting and there certainly was never a dull moment. I loved Tyla and Sebastian together. I thought they had great chemistry and excellent push and pull. Yes, Tyla did frustrate me with her wanting to deny being Sebastian’s mate, but she had her reasons and if anything, it just made me root harder for the two of them. And Sebastian, I loved his determination. He knew he belonged with Tyla and would do anything for her.

Resisting The Moon is an exciting addition to the Royal Shifters series. I love the story-line and paranormal aspects. This story is filled with just the right amount of action, drama, romance and suspense. And I loved all the great twists along the way.

My Review

“Love, in all my experience, was just that–selfishness wrapped up in a pretty little bow.”

I have been a huge fan of Rachel Van Dyken’s books for a long time now. And with each new book or new series, I fall more in love with the characters and the author’s writing. The Dark Ones was no exception and has quickly found a place for its self as one of my top RVD reads.

When I first started this book, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. From the moment I read the first page, I knew I was on to something that was going to be exciting, and entertaining. I was completely entranced and spellbound by the characters and the story-line. The story-line was so refreshing and unique. We were given vampires, werewolves, sirens, humans and angelic beings.

The Dark Ones follows the story of Genesis. Her entire life she has been told that she is ugly and nothing. She has been told that her purpose in life, if called upon, is to teach and serve the immortals. However, Genesis will quickly find out that everything that she has been told is a lie. Now, she will find herself facing a new reality and caught between two men. She will be tested and forced to make a choice. Only, the wrong choice could cost Genesis her life…..

The Dark Ones is fast paced, addictive and captivating. The story is very well written and reminded me exactly why I love this genre. I found myself completely lost to the characters and their story. I couldn’t get enough and didn’t want to put it down. The Dark Ones gave me everything I was looking for and more; from an intriguing plot to fascinating characters and exciting twists. This story had angst, romance, action, suspense and lots of steamy, swoony times. Fans of Rachel Van Dyken, you will not be disappointed in The Dark Ones. And if you’re like me, you will be waiting anxiously for more of The Dark Ones….

“Ethan, a word?” Alex stood.

“Sure.” Ethan kissed the top of my head and left the room while Mason started rummaging around the kitchen; pots and pans clanged together, and then he pulled out a giant piece of steak.

“I hope that’s not for me.” I pointed.

“Protein…” He threw the steak into the pan. “…feeds the blood, which feeds the mate, which, in turn, feeds you.”

“You gonna start singing Circle of Life?” I joked.

“Circle of life?” he repeated.

“Lion King?”

“Cassius is king.”

I looked helplessly to Stephanie, who was trying to hide her smile behind her hand.

“Have you seriously never watched Lion King?”

“Werewolves are scared of TV,” Stephanie said with a soft laugh.

“And sirens are afraid of the dark,” he fired back, while she shuddered. “I’m not afraid of the TV. I just don’t see the point in sitting in front of a flat box and watching people make fools of themselves.”

“He’d rather be the fool.” Stephanie nodded and winked in my direction.

“Mason…” I walked over to him and put my head on his shoulder. “How about I eat the steak and we watch Lion King?”

“Dances with Wolves?”

Stephanie snickered loudly behind her hand.

“Wolves do not dance,” Mason growled.

“Oh, we know.” Stephanie nodded. “I’ve seen it once. Don’t care to see it again.”

“Too much whiskey.” Mason kissed the top of my head. “Eat the whole steak, and then we’ll talk about King Lion.”

“Lion King.”

“Same thing.”

I sighed helplessly and went to sit at the table while Mason cooked.

Stephanie gave me a side hug. “Eight tomorrow morning, alright?”

“Bed.” She shrugged. “It’s been a long night.” Her eyes misted again.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah.” Her voice cracked. “Like Alex said, we get emotional. Can’t help it.”

It felt like she was lying, but I was human, how would I know? I nodded and turned my attention back to Mason, who’d started searing the steak.

“So you cook meat but refuse to eat it?”

“I’m a vegetarian.” He smiled. I’d never realized how pointy his teeth were on the sides. Maybe that’s how he’d been able to bite into me before Ethan had mated with me.

“Your teeth say otherwise.” I pointed. “Flat means vegetarian. Pointy means carnivore.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “I didn’t say it was natural for me to be a vegetarian.”

“Okay… so why?”

He let out a heavy sigh. “Meat made my mate sick… for one reason or another. It gave her headaches. She only ate fruits, vegetables, nuts.” He flipped the steak. “So I learned to like other foods.”

“And now?”

He went very quiet, his eyes focusing in on the steak. “Now…” His voice was hoarse. “I honor her with my every meal.”

My throat clogged with emotion.

The fact that he honored her at all — but with every single meal — killed me. How did he survive that? How did he live every day having known true love? And know he may never experience it again — living forever?

“Don’t pity me.” Mason let out a gruff growl. “It makes it harder.”

“Sorry,” I whispered. “So pinecones, huh?”

He laughed. “Yes, well, it’s an acquired taste.”

“I bet.”

My heart picked up speed, and then I smelled him. Ethan entered the room, briskly walking by me, kissing my head. “Steak almost done?”

“I’m a perfectionist.” Mason held up his hands. “Let the juices seal.”

Ethan scrunched up his nose. “Her blood tastes better than that steak.”

“Yes, well, her blood tastes good because she’s living. She’s living because I feed her.”

“Werewolf has a point,” I teased. “Besides, if I eat my whole steak, we’re going to watch Lion King!”

“Whose king?” Ethan tilted his head. “What lion? Mason’s a wolf.”

And that’s how I ended up spending my evening between a vampire and a werewolf, eating steak and watching a Disney movie while they argued over the animal kingdom, not to mention the lion’s choice in song.

It felt right.

Like I’d finally found my place.

My home.

I had no idea that the security I felt was about to get ripped from me, from the very people I’d put my trust in.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?” As inconsequential as her answer was, it mattered to me. I wanted to know her tastes and preferences. I wanted to know everything about her.

“My favorite flavor of ice cream?” She leaned up on her elbow. “Are you seriously asking me that right now?”

“I need to know more about you.”
“And that includes learning my ice cream preferences?”

“You know all of that stuff about me, don’t you?” I already knew the answer.

“Rocky Road.” She flushed.

“Does that freak you out?”

I ran my lips across hers. “Not in the slightest. It means you cared enough to know. I should have too. I should have noticed you more.”

“You had plenty of other girls to notice.”

“I don’t notice them now.” There was no one else I wanted. I’d never understand how I hadn’t noticed how perfect we were for each other.

“Maybe you will again.”

“Nope. You’re stuck with me.” I was only half joking. I wouldn’t force my company on her, but if it was up to me, I’d never leave her side again.

“Because I already know you’re a wolf?”
“No.” I felt a growl growing inside me. “Because you’re meant to be with me.”

“Oh no. No. No.” She moved away. “None of that. Next you are going to start talking about pre-destined dreams and freaky stuff like that.”

I stiffened. Those dreams were the root of most of our trouble. “This has nothing to do with dreams. It’s about the way I feel. Becoming Dire has made things even clearer for me.”

“But you’re still you, so if it’s just your Dire side…”

I rolled her over so she was under me. “My feelings for you come from both of my sides. They were always there, but this experience has made them stronger. Being with you has made them stronger. Becoming a Dire has only accentuated what I already felt as a human. Things are clearer now, crisper.”

She grazed her teeth over her lip in a nervous gesture, and I couldn’t hold back. I needed to taste her lips myself. I leaned my head down and let my lips connect with hers. The kiss wasn’t gentle nor any of the things I’d promised my kisses with her would be now. It was primal and needy. I was greedy, wanting and needing to soak up every ounce of her.

About DAWN:The Dire Wolves Chronicles-

It is always darkest before dawn.

Gage and Mary Anne are on the run and determined to break Hunter out of prison so he can finish changing Gage. They look to Mary Anne’s college friend Genevieve and the zany Dire Denny for assistance, but in the end, help comes from the unlikeliest of places.

Hunter must end the hunt even if it means destroying his own brother and giving up on the girl destined to be his. With betrayal surrounding him at every turn, his best chance at ending the hunt is someone he is sworn to hate.

My Review

“I’m afraid of how you make me feel. Of how out of control we get when we’re together, but that has nothing to do with you being a Dire. That crazy feeling was there before you changed.”

There are no words to describe how excited I was to pick up this book. Ever since I finished Dusk, I have been waiting in anticipation to get my hands on Dawn. And let me tell you, Dawn was worth the wait!

Dawn picks up right where Dusk left off. Mary Anne and Gage are on the run. However, they can’t just run off and start a new life. No, they have to somehow find a way to break Hunter out of prison so that he can finish changing Gage. Fresh out of options, they have no choice, but to reach out to Mary Anne’s friend Genevieve. Along with her and Denny’s help, they will try to make the impossible happen…..Hunter is determined to end the hunt, no matter what the cost. He doesn’t know who to trust, but in the end, the answer will come from a very unlikely source….

Dawn was such an exciting read. It was fast paced and told from multiple points of view. Normally, I only like to read two points of view. More than two can get tricky and as a reader, I start to get overwhelmed. However, in this case, the multiple points of view really worked well and added so much to the story.

Writing a spoiler free review for a book you really enjoyed is so hard!!! I just want to gush in excitement! But, I’m not going to spoil this for you. Nope. But, I will tell you this: I loved Dawn. I loved everything about this book. It had mystery and suspense, angst and romance, betrayal and help from unexpected places. The main characters; I felt so connected to Mary Anne and Gage. The two of them together are a force to be reckoned with and they love they share is so strong, so real.

I enjoyed getting lost in the world that Alyssa Rose Ivy has created. Every time that I think I couldn’t possibly love a character or paranormal creature more, she has to go and prove me wrong. She gives me characters that are easy to relate to, to connect with and then interweaves their stories together, so that I never really have to say goodbye to my favorite characters.

Dawn was the perfect ending to the Dire Wolves series. I devoured this book in one sitting. I literally finished it in about 3 hours! It was that good! I could not put it down. I was captivated and intrigued from start to finish. Even though Mary Anne and Gage’s story is over, I am hopeful that this won’t be the last that we see of them. Alyssa Rose Ivy has really opened my eyes to the paranormal scene and I can not wait to see what journey she will take me on next!
