Ex-Navy SEAL Cabe Moss always comes when called to duty―at all costs. Even though the death of his fiancée nearly destroyed him, Cabe won’t let his past interfere with any work that has to get done. When his latest task pushes him to team up with FBI Agent Amy Murray, a fierce beauty with the undercover skills to match, Cabe must admit that, for the first time in years, he wants to do more than just complete their mission together…

Amy was born ready for this assignment, but working side-by-side with the the strong, silent, and frustratingly professional Cabe seems to be the biggest challenge of all. My Review

Deep Cover is the third book in The Love Over Duty Series and is an interconnected stand-alone novel. Deep Cover follows the story of Cabe and Amy. Cabe is the guy you can always count on when you need him. When called to duty, he’ll never let you down. When his fiancee passed away, it nearly destroyed him. He will face his biggest challenge to date when he gets paired up with FBI Agent Amy Murry. Even though Cabe may appear to be the strong, silent type, there is more to him than meets the eye. The stakes are high and sparks are flying all over the place. Will Amy be able to resist Cabe? Will they be able to keep things professional and solve the case?? There’s only one way to find out…..

Deep Cover is my first book by this author and overall I thought it was an ok read. I was really intrigued by the story-line and the characters. I wanted to know more, though I will admit, the first part of the story did move at a slower pace than I would like. Since the story is not told from the first person point of view, I will admit that I was distracted. With so many characters and the different pov type, I found it hard to concentrate on the story. 2nd & 3rd Person POV is something that I personally struggle with, but do try my best to overcome.

Anyways, I liked Amy and Cabe together. Amy was smart and witty. She challenged Cabe and made him want to have a life again. And Cabe was an alpha male with the biggest heart, even when he seemed closed off and wanting to keep things professional. Together, I thought these two meshed well and was looking forward to seeing how their story was going to play out.

Deep Cover is one of those stories that I think will be a hit for some and a miss for others. For me, I thought it was an ok read. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either. There was a few issues with the story that made it a little hard for me, but in the end, I’m glad I didn’t give up on Amy and Cabe’s story. I loved the danger and suspense that Deep Cover had to offer and appreciated the light drama associated with Amy and Cabe’s romance.

As I stated before, this is my first read by this author, and while it wasn’t a 100% hit for me, I’d still opening to checking out more from her in the future.

Blurb

Jake Tucker is broken. At twenty-two, he went into the Marine Corps a naïve, troubled youth. Nine years and four tours later, Jake finds himself back on US soil, though his mind remains firmly planted in the sands of Afghanistan with the men he left behind.

Wounded, chewed up and spat out by war, Jake has only his dog, Nuke, PTSD, and survivor’s guilt to keep him company. He’s lived every day for nine years wondering when it will be his last, but there’s little comfort in the fact that he’s still standing when his platoon isn’t.

Ellie Mason doesn’t have time for broken. She’s too busy trying to put food on the table. And keeping up with the demands of her autistic son, Spencer, is sometimes like fighting behind enemy lines. As if navigating the minefields of single parenthood isn’t enough, Ellie finds herself drawn to the quiet Marine who’s just as lonely as she is. But she’s loved damaged men before, and it left her wounded.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Fairhope, Alabama, Ellie and Jake find themselves running toward the sound of chaos.

Love is war.

Only the strong survive, and surrender is inevitable.

toward the sound of chaos use

Excerpt

“Why haven’t you found a woman to love yet, Jake?”

I stiffen. Her question catches me off guard. I don’t know how to reply to that. I have found someone, but she deserves better than to spend her life with a freak.

“I like being alone.” That was a lie. “Who in their right mind would have me?” is what I want to say, but I don’t. I don’t tell her how much I loathe myself, or that I wish I was dead, or that at night I lie awake wondering if this was part of Aasif Bashir’s plan in disfiguring me—that he’d hoped that one day I’d roam the earth a free man and yet never know the freedom of a woman’s touch again.

I don’t tell her that I hate being alone because I can never shut off the voices or quiet the sounds of war that ring in my ear long after the dust has settled and the blood has dried. I attempt to fill the void with distractions: Nuke, Ellie, Spencer, pouring myself into something physical until my limbs shake from misuse, but it doesn’t mask the stillness. That’s always waiting for the moment I shut everything off. And it never becomes any less haunting.

“I hate it,” she says, as if she’s echoing my thoughts. “Being alone. When you climb into bed and everything’s so still you could hear a pin drop? There’s something in that silence that screams all my greatest fears.”

“What are they?” I say, too quickly.

“My fears?” she asks with a sigh. “That I’ll be alone forever. That Spence will grow up and leave like all kids do, or that he’ll enlist and my life will be filled with endless days and nights of that sound. Of nothing.”

I feel like she just cracked open my skull and pulled the words from my head, but two hearts as lonely as ours? Well, that’s a dangerous thing. Deep down I know as much as she does that I’m no good for her, and yet I’m still too selfish to push her away.

“You shouldn’t be alone,” I whisper.

“Neither should you.” She leans back into my embrace, and I kiss the top of her hair because I never dreamed I’d be lucky enough to do that again to any woman, let alone to this angel who came crashing into my life and made all the pain that came before her seem worth it.

I survived war, I survived torture at the hands of the Taliban, but I won’t survive Ellie Mason, not with my heart still intact.

My Review

“The second I saw her, my plans for the evening became whatever put me in her orbit. I didn’t know where this was headed, but right now I was happy to follow her anywhere.”

“This guy should come with a warning label. Caution: Kisses will make you forget your own name. Proceed at your own risk.”

“I was thirty years old. I’d spent most of my teen years and adult life looking for love while simultaneously guarding my heart, calculating risks, approaching love like it was something I could ensure. And here it was. Bigger than me, than my fears, than anything. There was no guarding against it. No insurance I could take out that would protect me. This was skydiving, free fall, jumping off the cliff with no idea if there was rocks below or how deep the water was. And whatever questions I might have had, the fear that I’d go splat at the bottom, were carried away with the wind.”

To say that I loved this book would be a complete understatement. If I could give it a million stars, I totally would. This book has blown me away. It has totally exceeded my expectations. It is easily one of my top reads of this year.

When I first heard about Fly With Me, I could not wait to get my hands on it and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. From the moment I picked up this book, I was hooked. I mean hooked. I fell in love with the characters instantly. The chemistry between Noah and Jordan was intense right off the bat. You just knew that these two together was going to be something amazing. Their banter was excellent and I just loved watching the two of them together. They just made me laugh and the love between the two of them just felt effortless. Yes, their relationship was not without its ups and downs. Being with a military man, no matter how long, would be hard for anyone. But, I really appreciated the strength and determination these two had. They knew what they both wanted and were going to do whatever it took to make it work.

Fly With Me is told from dual points of view and is extremely well written. The story-line captivates you from the very first page and before you know it, you find yourself totally lost and consumed by Jordan and Noah’s story. And what an amazing story to get lost in. Fly With Me totally exceeded my expectations; taking me on a journey I will never forget. This story made me laugh; boy did it make me laugh. It made me swoon. It pulled at my heart and even broke it a few times. It made me cry. But, most of all, it made me fall in love. This book reminded me of just how important and precious life is and that when you do find the one that you love, you don’t take it for granted.

I just loved everything about this story; from start to finish. I mean, it has it all. From a great story-line to amazing characters. To real friendships and a love that lasts a lifetime. I think that the Wild Aces series is off to one amazing start. Chanel Cleeton has really outdone herself this time and I gotta tell you, I can not wait to see where the rest of this series will go. If you’re looking for a book that is well-written and has a lot of heart, then I definitely recommend checking this book out!

Review: Save Me (Archer Brothers #3) by Heidi McLaughlin

saveme

Tucker McCoy thought the hardest mission of his life was over. After being deployed for six years, all he wanted to do was return home to his wife and daughter. But when he arrives home with roses in his hand, the last thing he expects is to be welcomed by a stranger. Being presumed dead for six years doesn’t help his cause as no one is giving him the answers he needs.

Now his mission is to find out where his family is and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring them home, even if that means bringing down the people involved.

Penelope McCoy has a secret and one she’s willing to keep until she can find someone to trust. In order to do that, she and her daughter must hide, change their identities and forget about their previous life.

For six years she’s been running and she soon realizes that time is catching up with her. Now she has to decide whether to run again or face the ghosts of her past head on.

My Review

“Our lives are nothing but a conspiracy and if we don’t think outside the box, we’ll never figure it all out.”

“For right now, home is here. It doesn’t have to be a place, or specific house. Home is where you hang up your coat and kick off your shoes. Home is where you sit down for a nice meal, and if you have friends surrounding you, it’s so much better.”

Save Me is going to be one of those reads you’re either love or you’re hate. For me, I know I will probably be in the minority here, but I have a bit of mixed feelings toward this book. So, for most of the book, I was hooked. I was intrigued. I was dying to know what happened to Penny and why she was on the run. My heart hurt for her that she believed Tucker was dead. And Tucker….I can not even imagine what he was going through; thinking he was just on a mission for 6 years, only to come home and find life as he knows it changed. Now, I can’t say much about this book, because I don’t want to spoil anything for you. What I will say is that I really liked the idea of the story. I loved the mystery and intrigue around it. I loved trying to figure out what was going on and who you could really trust.

However, I did have one major issue with the story and that was the pacing. It was great up until the last 20% or so. Once the story climaxed and was starting to wrap up, it just blew by. It was like someone hit the fast-forward button. You see, my problem is that since so much of the story had to do with Tucker trying to find Penny and reclaim his life, I need more from them. I wanted to see more of them together after they were reunited. I wanted to see them rebuild their relationship and grow back together as a couple, especially after everything that happened. Please don’t get me wrong, I know we do get some of that. But I just feel that as big as a part as their story was and how Tucker’s “death” changed so many things, that they should have been given more than just a chapter or two at the end. When you read the book, you will have a clearer picture as to the other reason that I was bothered by how quickly they moved on. I know that I’m being vague, but trust me when I say you will understand when you read this book.

Overall, Save Me was a quick and easy read for me. The plot definitely pulls you in and will keep you guessing right until the very end. Again, I know that I will probably be in the minority about this book and even though this book was a 100% hit for me, I’m still glad that I checked it out.

My Review

“As long as you run, I’ll always catch you, Jade.”

I don’t know about you guys, but when I heard that Hiliary Storm and Kathy Coopmans were going to write a novel together, I could not wait to get my hands on it. I knew this book was going to be hot. I knew this book was going to be sexy. And boy, let me tell you, ICE does not disappoint.

From the moment you pick up ICE, you are pulled into the story. It starts off with heck of scorching start that will have you wondering where are they going to go with this. You will have to read more. You won’t be able to put this book down. Now, I’m not going to spoil any of this for you, but I will tell you this; this story is scorching. The characters have intense chemistry and are total military badasses. Kaleb is one heck of an alpha male. He knew he wanted Jade from the moment he saw her and he wasn’t going to take no for an answer. And I just LOVED Jade. She was tough, she guarded her heart and wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted as well. And when you throw Kaleb and Jade together….well, the two of them are just explosive.

ICE is told from dual points of view and is very captivating. I thought the story was well-written and I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen to our beloved characters next. This story had the perfect balance of drama, action, sexy times and romance with a little angst thrown in along the way. And of course, no good story would be complete without a delicious twist thrown in at the end. The end of this story will leave you breathless and begging to get your hands on the next installment. I for one can not wait to see what will happen next!

Uncompromising Series Book One

Talon

I surf.
I fuck.
I pretend to smile.

Two years ago my life was perfect, until it wasn’t. I scattered my wife’s ashes then walked away from the Marines. I didn’t think I had anything left to lose.

I was wrong.

The blond showed up at my surf shop, beaten and stabbed. I did what I was trained to do—I stitched her up. I didn’t have a clue who she was and I told myself I didn’t care. Until they came looking for her.

I swore I’d take my last breath before I let anyone else hurt her except I didn’t know she was keeping a deadly secret. Now I had two choices, her life or mine.

Marriage and combat taught me the same thing—I was no one’s hero. And I was about to prove it.

My Review

“Siren didn’t just take my breath away, she stole my reason.”

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for Talon’s story. Ever since I was first introduced to his character in The Unchecked Series, I had to know more about him. I asked Sybil Bartel. I begged her to please give us Talon’s story and let me tell you, it was so worth the wait. Talon’s story does not disappoint one bit.

On the outside, Talon appears to have it all together; an ex military man, now surfer and surf shop owner. He spends his days living the easy life: sleeping with women and have a good time. Never letting anyone get close and the moment they want more, he cuts them loose. Talon is a great man and a wonderful friend. You can always count on him when you’re in a bind and he can help you get out of any situation.

But, you see, Talon isn’t perfect. He’s not a hero at all. However, seeing Nicole badly beaten stirs his protective side and makes him want to protect and care for her. Nicole is only supposed to stay with Talon until her wounds heal, but being around Nicole is a game-changer. Nicole has unknowingly woken up a part of Talon that he thought was dead. He tries to fight the undeniable connection between the two of them, but is unable to do so. As the two of them try to navigate their way through whatever is going on with them, Talon quickly sees that everything isn’t as it seems. Nicole is keeping a secret. A very big one. A secret that has the power to change everything. When the truth finally comes out, will Talon able to keep his promise and keep Nicole safe? Will Talon ever get over the loss of his ex-wife?

Talon was well written and a quick and easy read for me. This was one of my most anticipated reads, so I devoured this book in just one sitting. This book is captivating and keeps your heart pounding. There is suspense and danger around every corner. Talon and Nicole’s story is sexy and intriguing. It is filled with lots of action and delicious twists and turns. This book gave me everything that I was looking for in Talon’s story and more.

There are some debts you can’t repay.

Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl’s dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard, the girl he’s craved since his high school hockey days. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time as they’ve fought for stolen weekends between his post at Ft. Rucker and her college at Vanderbilt. Now that Josh is a medevac pilot and Ember is headed toward graduation, they’re moving on—and in—together.

Ember never wanted the Army life, but loving Josh means accepting whatever the army dictates—even when that means saying goodbye as Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and that took her father. But filling their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future doesn’t temper Ember’s fear, and if there’s one thing she’s learned from her father’s death, it’s that there are some obstacles even love can’t conquer.

Flight school is over.
This is war.

My Review

“You are my dream now, December Howard. You are everything to me. My heart beats for you , my soul is only whole when you’re near. You’re my home, my shelter, my wildest fantasy, and I can not imagine a future where you’re not mine, because I’m yours in every sense of the word.”

“You and me?” he whispered against my lips. “Against the world,” I promised. And what a beautiful world it was. Our world.

I have been a fan of the Flight & Glory series ever since I picked up Full Measures. And with each book, I have fallen more in love with the characters and their stories. So, when I heard about Hallowed Ground and that we were getting more Josh and Ember, I just knew I had to read it. What I didn’t know was how much this book was going to effect me. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Hallowed Ground since I finished it. Hallowed Ground took me on such an incredible journey; one that I wasn’t expecting. It was beautiful and heartbreaking. There were moments where I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest and I hurt so much for what the characters were going through. But, I have to tell you, their story; it was worth it. It was worth every moment that I had to walk away. It was worth every moment when I felt like I was going to throw my kindle. It was worth every moment where I had tears in my eyes. It was worth every moment that I fell in love and had my heart broken.

Hallowed Ground is well-written and utterly captivating. Just when I thought I couldn’t love these characters anymore, Rebecca Yarros has proved me wrong. She has found a way to make me connect so deeply to these characters that I feel as though they are a part of me. She made the characters so real and their emotions so palpable. I felt like I was experiencing everything right along with them. And along the way, these characters found a way to burrow themselves deep into my heart. Yes, this is supposed to be Josh and Ember’s story, but it so, so much more.

I will not go into any of the details of this story, but I will say this: Have tissues handy. Be prepared for a wild, emotional ride. Be prepared to have your mind consumed with this story. This book is everything and has easily made it to my list of top reads for 2016. If there is one book/one series that you should read this year, I highly recommend that you check out this Flight & Glory series by Rebecca Yarros. You will not be disappointed.

EXCERPT

I pushed my chair out and reached for her, lifting her tiny, curved frame into my lap. Her head tucked beneath my chin, and she curled into me, fitting right where she was always meant to be. My arms closed around her. “We have a month.”

“It’s not long enough.” Her fingers gripped my shirt like she could keep me here if she just held on tight enough. God, what I wouldn’t have given to stay with her.

“Forever isn’t long enough for us, December, but that’s what we’re going to have. You and I have never chosen the easy path. This is just another hurdle.” I rubbed my chin over her soft hair and tried to soak in every detail of holding her—the sweet way she smelled, the smooth texture of her skin beneath my hands.

She leaned back in my arms and cupped my face. “I can’t lose you.” Her voice broke, and tears pooled in her eyes.

I’d never hated myself more than I did in that moment. She’d made it through a nightmare no one should have to face, and I was about to ask her to chance that fire again. My breath hitched, barely passing the lump in my throat. “You won’t. It would take something a hell of a lot stronger than a war to keep me from you.”

I sealed that promise with a kiss, tasting her fear and desperation as she responded. She opened underneath me, and I fused my mouth to hers, surrendering to the heat between us to pull us through this moment. There was nothing hotter or sweeter in this world than kissing December, feeling her go soft and pliant.

We’d fought so fucking hard to get here, to be together. This wasn’t fair, and we both knew it. But we also both knew it didn’t matter. Fair wasn’t exactly in the U.S. Army vocabulary.

I retreated just enough to whisper against her lips, “I’ll come home. I swear it.”

Review: Defenseless by Corinne Michales

defenselessMy life is a secret.
His life is dangerous.
We’re both stubborn, calculating, and controlling.
Mark Dixon doesn’t know what he’s getting into. He doesn’t know his games could cost us our lives. I have to do what is necessary to keep us alive, and that means guarding my heart.
But I know I’m defenseless against him, and in the end, he’ll force me to surrender.

My Review

“Charlie isn’t the kind of woman you move on from. She draws you in with the brightness of her sun and then leaves you fucking blind. There’s something deep and dark inside of her.”

Corinne Michaels has done it again. Defenseless was so unexpected and has such a different feel from the other books involving these characters. Defenseless is Mark and Charlie’s story. Mark is a man on a mission, wanting to get answers for what happened to Aaron and why things keep happening that shouldn’t. Charlie has intrigued him since the moment she helped rescue Aaron. The two of them share an attraction, an explosive connection. They want to explore it, but can’t because they need to keep their head in the game. But, as time goes on; these two quickly discover that their connection won’t go away. They are defenseless against the way they feel about each other. But, as they give in to what they want, the stakes have gotten even higher…

As I previously stated, Defenseless is so different from the other books that I’ve read by Corinne Michaels. Without going into too much detail, I can tell you that this book will answer a lot of questions. You will get to see how the rescue mission happened and how all the dots will align. Is there romance? Yes, there is tons of delicious, sexy moments. Mark and Charlie do not disappoint. But, there’s more to it than just the romance. There is action. There is drama. There is suspense. There is intrigue. And there are lots of good twists and turns that will leave you wondering who you can trust and who you can’t. This book definitely takes you on one thrilling ride.

Defenseless was a great addition to the Salvation Series, but can be read as a stand-alone. However, I do recommend checking out the other books in this series prior to reading this one, only because, I think you will enjoy Mark’s story even more. I loved getting to spend time with all my old friends from the previous books and seeing how their lives have continued to go forward, has left me with a big smile on my face! Defenseless was a fantastic read. If you are a fan of the Salvation Series, you won’t want to miss out on Mark’s story!
