Blurb:

He was a nameless guy in a bar—a man Grace couldn’t get out of her head…
A week later, she came home to find him sweaty and shirtless with a tape measure in hand, remodeling her loft. As a Parker-King, she’s not allowed to want someone like Noah Dalton. She’s sick of her life, though. Sick of the rules of being a Parker-King. She wants something more, even if it isn’t forever. Somewhere in history there was that one time where hot, no-strings-attached sex didn’t end badly, right? Finding comfort in the arms of a former SEAL is easy, not falling for one . . . not so much.

Noah left the military and moved to New York for one reason: his daughter. Not for some uptight businesswoman—a Manhattan elitist. So when Grace offers him the kind of relationship that no hot-blooded man can turn down, he should say no. And when her seemingly put-together life spins out of control, and his instincts to protect and save kick in, he should turn away. But he doesn’t.

Can two people from different worlds really live in the moment, knowing they’re on borrowed time, or is someone bound to get hurt?

It wasn’t until her students encouraged her to follow her dreams that Brittney said goodbye to Upstate New York in order to start a new adventure in the place she was raised: Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, she decided to take her students’ advice and begin to write again.

Throw Back Thursday: Fighting Temptation (Men of Honor #1) by K.C. Lynn

Posted on

This week’s Throw Back Thursday is going to K.C. Lynn and Fighting Temptation. I remember coming across this series on goodreads and a friend of mine told me, “Amy! You have got to read this book!!” So, I picked it up and this is where my love affair with KC Lynn’s writing began. There is literally nothing this author will write that I won’t read. Her writing is beautiful, flawless and full of deep emotions. She gives you stories filled with unforgettable love, hope, and overcoming the odds. I encourage you to pick up Fighting Temptation today and see for yourself what an incredible read this book/this whole series is. I promise you won’t regret it.

Jaxson is arrogant, angry and aggressive. Yet he’s also beautiful, strong and honorable. I unconditionally and irrevocably love every damaged part of him. And for the boy, who didn’t believe in love, he would always and forever have mine. ~Julia Sinclair

Julia was different from anyone I’d ever met. I never thought someone so good and genuine existed until her. The more I saw of her the more I became addicted to her. Every time I was around her she would destroy some of the darkness that lurked inside of me. She made the bad shit in my life seem not so terrible. Then, before I knew it, I had fallen for a girl from another world. ~Jaxson Reid

Two unlikely friends—the innocent, good girl and the notorious bad boy. One fateful night brought them together, and they formed a bond—one so strong it was unbreakable—until one night they gave into temptation.

Fast forward five years and Jaxson is back to fix the mistakes he’s made with the only girl who’s ever mattered to him. Only someone isn’t happy with his return, someone who thinks Julia is theirs and they will stop at nothing to make sure it stays that way—forever.

Jaxson will not only fight to protect Julia, but will also battle the new and existing demons that haunt his soul from death, corruption, destruction and war.

This is Book One in the Men Of Honor series. It can be read as a standalone and has a HEA. It’s New Adult Romance and is told from both character’s POV. Due to strong sexual content, coarse language and mature subject matter this book is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

My Review

“Life is beautiful and terrifying.”

“His other hand comes up to cup my jaw and the touch is so innocent yet conveys a feeling of being cherished. Protected. Like I”m something valuable and breakable.”

“I’m drowning in her. In her touch, her effect, the way she looks at me as if she sees past the darkness in my soul to the man that I was meant to be. The honorable man I was before. God, how I want to be that man again.”

“I’ve let one too many suns set on my feelings for Celia without telling her what she mans to me, how she calms the war in my soul and silences the screams.”

Fate. Love. Family. Heartbreak. Just how far would you go in the name of love? Sawyer and Celia are twins, but couldn’t be more opposite. Fate can sometimes be a cruel bitch and Sawyer is about to learn just how cruel she can be. With Celia on her deathbed, she has only one wish; she wants Sawyer to pack up her things and give her friends the illusion that all is well with Celia, that Celia is just embarking on another adventure. Sounds easy enough. But for Sawyer, the task is harder than she ever imagined. How can she pretend to be her fearless sister? With Celia’s coin in her hand, Sawyer must allow fate to decide her actions and maybe just maybe she’ll find a little bit of peace and happiness….Aden hasn’t been quite right since the war. His PTSD has taken over his life leaving him to drown his sorrows in alcohol and women. He never saw Sawyer coming. She makes him want to be the man that he used to be. She makes him want to be so much more. Aden tries to stay away, but the pull is just too hard to ignore. Will Sawyer finally get out and enjoy life? Will Sawyer and Aden find their happily ever after? Will Sawyer’s truth destroy everything with Aden?? You’re just going to have to pick up this book and find out for yourself….

Overall, I really enjoyed Wrecked. I found Sawyer and Aden’s story to be compelling and wasn’t able to put it down. Their story is one that just pulls you in from the very beginning and has you devouring each page to see what will happen next. I really liked the idea of this story; honoring a dying woman’s last wish. You knew that nothing good was going to come from Sawyer pretending to be her sister, but how could she not do what her sister asked of her. There was so much good in Sawyer. She was patient and kind. She had so many fears, but overcame them in the name of her sister. Aden was a wonderful surprise. He was dark, moody and mysterious. He was broken and damaged from the cruel ways of war. He had so many demons of his own to battle and it was a joy watching him overcome those demons.

Wrecked is a complex and beautiful story. It is heartbreaking in the best possible way. This is a story of family and the love of sisters. It is a story of taking risks and chances. It is a story of finding yourself and heartache. It is a story of second chances–not just in love, but with life. This is a story of loss and finding love in the most unexpected places.

I will warn you that Wrecked does deal with some pretty serious and intense subject matter. I applaud the author for the way she handled these situations and how she stayed true to these damaged characters.

Wrecked took me by surprise in the best possible way. It was an emotional and beautiful journey. And I just enjoyed every single moment.

EXCERPT

Oh no, fuck no!

I thought he was kidding. I should’ve known better. Aden’s intentions with me since I stupidly boarded this boat have been my torment for his enjoyment. He loved watching me squirm over the bait tank and when I proved I wouldn’t shy away from a challenge, he pulled out the big guns. From his flirty smiles to his teasing touches, he’s discovered my weaknesses and is exploiting them for his own entertainment.

Now this? Raw fish probably still warm from fighting for its life.

And now I’m God knows how many feet above water sitting on a two-seater bench held up by rusty ladders and staring down a piece of glistening pink meat.

“You have to eat it, it’s a rite of passage.” He offers the meat to my lips and I quickly turn my face away.

“I’m really not hungry.” As if the idea isn’t enough to turn my stomach, watching him clean the fish before sectioning off enough for lunch wasn’t much of an appetite builder.

“Of course you are.” He brings the piece to his own mouth and takes a bite, closing his eyes with a moan as he chews.

I feel a rush of bile hit my throat, or maybe it’s beer, either way it’s warm and it burns. “That’s disgusting.”

“You’re telling me you don’t like sushi?”

My eyes widen. Sawyer would say she’s never had sushi. But Celia’s a different story. She ate a live cricket in the eighth grade on a dare. She didn’t even flinch. “I like sushi, just not directly from the…um…source.”

“Doesn’t get fresher than this.” He takes another bite and I can’t deny that his response to eating it does give it some appeal.

“I think I need soy sauce or that green stuff.” What’s it called?

“Just try it.”

“I really don’t want to.”

“Oh come on.” He smiles in that cute crooked way that makes my heart dip and dive. “Live a little.”

I chew the inside of my mouth debating the cost/benefit of taking a bite of this fresh-out-of-the-ocean fish. On one hand, I’ll impress Aden. That in and of itself is worth the ick factor. But what if I throw up all over his boat? Is the chance of impressing him worth totally humiliating myself? I groan when I realize what I’m doing, exactly what I swore I wouldn’t do. I’m making an internal pros and cons list. I close my eyes and steel my resolve and my spine. Don’t think, just decide. I pop open my eyes followed by my mouth.

“Yeah?” He stares at my parted lips.

I nod, hoping he’ll hurry before I change my mind.

Lifting the rose-colored flesh forward, he places it between my teeth. It’s a small bite so I close my lips around his fingers expecting him to pull away…but he doesn’t. For a moment I’m suspended in his gaze, totally stuck while his hot fingers rest between my lips. This should be grossing me out; after all, I watched him gut this fish with his bare hands and to wash off all the blood he merely dipped them into the ocean. But all the thoughts of raw fish and a stranger’s finger do nothing to stave off the warmth blooming in my belly. My tongue pulls the meat deeper into my mouth, brushing against the rough pad of his forefinger. He bites his lip but finally drops his hand.

He watches intently while I chew and swallow.

“How was it?” His voice is low and gruff.

Lost in the heated moment, I barely tasted it. “Good.”

His hand cups the back of my head and he pulls me toward him, stopping just short of our lips touching. “I can’t fucking take this anymore.” His breath is sawing in and out, bursting against my mouth with impatience. “Let me.” It’s a demand, not a question.

A kiss. I don’t need to channel Celia or flip a coin…I know what I want.

I lick my lips and close the slight distance between us.

It’s impossible not to smile that he remembered my drink of choice. It’s also hopeless to pretend that the boyish grin he’s flipping me doesn’t melt away some of the ice around my heart.

Still, I don’t want to play nice.

“I already had coffee today. But thank you,” I say politely.

“No offense, but you are kind of irritable this morning. Maybe you could use another shot of caffeine.”

“You think I’m irritable now? Keep it up.”

“You never were a morning person,” he laughs. “Some things never change.”

“And some things do,” I point out, giving him a look. “Seriously, why are you here?”

“I have business with Violet. Remember?”

“That’s bullshit anyway, but she’s not here. You’ll have to come back later.”

“Is that an invitation?” he laughs.

“Did it sound like one?” My arms cross over my chest and I’m aware it makes my boobs look bigger. As his eyes drop and catch the top of my cleavage, his gaze burns a trail on the ascent back up to my eyes.

Satisfaction paints a smug look on my face and desire burns in the apex of my thighs. As discreetly as possible, I clench my legs together to quell a bit of the ache that’s beginning to throb under his observation.

When our gazes meet, his is crackling. He lifts a single brow. “I damn sure hope that’s an offer to come. If it’s not, we have a problem on our hands.”

“No, you have a problem on your hands,” I say, shrugging. “It has nothing to do with me.”

“It could.”

Embrace Sales Blitz: Best Book Boyfriends Ever: Men In Uniform

Posted on

This week, Entangled Publishing has been celebrating The Best Book Boyfriends Ever by shining a light on some of the heroes on Embrace! Today I’m joining in as we salute the military book boyfriends!

Authors Ophelia London & Cole Gibsen shared their thoughts about writing about men in uniform. Entangled has all of the Embrace stories with military heroes on sale for just 99¢, today only!

Is your hero inspired by a real-life person? If so, who?

Ophelia London (author of Abby Road & Crossing Abby Road): Actually, my hero, Todd, is very, very roughly based on a mix of my college boyfriend and the fantasy I wished he’d been back then. Hee-hee. I started dreaming up this story a few years after 9/11, so I KNEW Todd needed to have served in the military.

Cole Gibsen (author of Seared on my Soul): I’m the executive director of a charity that places PTSD service dogs with veterans. I wouldn’t say Reece was inspired by a particular veteran, but rather the struggle I’ve witnessed so many of them going through.

What other kinds of heroes do you like to read about?

Ophelia: Basically any of them! But currently, I love to read about powerful men: the businessmen: strong silent type that appear to be all business, but deep down have a gooey heart of gold. And if they have an accent, whooo baby!

Cole: I’m seriously a romance junkie, so when it comes to heroes, I don’t discriminate. I love them all.

Playlist – music inspired by Embrace’s men in uniform, selected by the authors.

Fight & Glory #2
Since her sister’s death, Paisley, who shares her sister’s heart condition, is treated like glass by her parents. But nothing will stop her from completing her Bucket List—even if it kills her. And it almost does, until Jagger pulls her from the ocean and sets her soul on fire. Jagger is wickedly hot, reckless, and perfect for a girl living life to the fullest. Except Paisley is the commanding general’s daughter and her boyfriend is Jagger’s biggest rival. One wrong move, and they could crash and burn…

Beyond What is Given by Rebecca Yarros
Fight & Glory #3
The last thing Lt. Grayson Masters needs is the distraction of his gorgeous new roommate, Samantha Fitzgerald. While her smart mouth and free spirit are irresistibly irritating, he can’t deny their off-the-charts chemistry—or her ability to pull his focus away from his Apache helicopter course. Sam has no business digging for Grayson’s secrets while she’s hiding her own, but that doesn’t stop her from trying to tear down his walls. Each barrier she busts through drops one of her own, though, and she’s not prepared for the truth…

Hallowed Ground by Rebecca Yarros
Fight & Glory #4
Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl’s dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time. As Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and took Ember’s father, they fill their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future… If there’s one thing Ember has learned from her father’s death, it’s that there are some obstacles even love can’t conquer.

Seared on My Soul by Cole Gibsen
Written on My Heart #2
Reece Montgomery never planned on being anyone’s hero, especially the foul-mouthed, bleach-blonde barista from the local coffee shop. He thinks there’s more to Emily Garret than her tattoos, and lip ring, but getting close means letting her into his past and meeting his ghosts.

Abby Road by Ophelia London
Abby Road #1
It’s been exactly one day since rock star Abby Kelly fled her chaotic life. One day without her demanding manager, papparrazzi, ridiculous tour schedules, and recording sessions. But all it takes is one twist of fate— to enter a stranger’s surf shop while trying to dodge some fans—for everything to change. When Abby meets Todd, an ex-Marine sniper turned surfer, she feels things she hasn’t felt for a long time. Possibly never. But when the real world comes crashing back in, Abby is caught between the superstar she’s become…and the painfully real human being she longs to be.

Crossing Abby Road by Ophelia London
Abby Road #2
Todd Camford went from Marine sniper to owning a beachfront surf shop in Florida. He’s a free-flying, unfettered hawk, and relationships outside of family are out of the question. And then she comes into his shop. Everyone knows who Abigail Kelly is—mega rockstar, tabloid fixture. He’d be an ass (or possibly insane) to think he can resist her. Just for today, maybe he’ll keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn’t get mobbed. Because really, how much damage could one day with a super-hot, kick-ass celebrity really do?

Release Blitz with Review: Devil You Know (Lost Boys #1) by L.A. Fiore

Title: Devil You Know
Series: Lost Boys #1
Author: L.A. Fiore
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense
Release Date: March 10, 2017
Blurb

Damian Tate. One look into his sad green eyes and I was hooked. I wanted to be the one to make him laugh, to make him smile. I hadn’t expected him to be the one to make me blush, to make me hot…to make me fall in love. He was my first kiss, my first love, my first everything. I wanted forever with him, but life got in the way.

He enlisted, I went to college, and for years we were never in the same place long enough to pick up where we left off.

Thirteen years after he left, tragedy brings him home. The stoic boy I fell in love with grew into a quiet, dangerous and wildly sexy man. He still tugs on all the right strings for me, but he seems determined to keep me at arm’s-length.

However, when trouble comes knocking at my door, he is the one to put himself between that trouble and me.

Spending time with him might drive me insane, or it might be our second chance at first love.

My Review

“Three words and I was a goner. I didn’t understand what I felt for this boy nor did I appreciate the uniqueness of it at the time, but I did know that little smile and those three words was all it took for Damian Tate to claim a piece of me that I would never get back.”

“He curled his back, lowered his head and kissed me. Not a chaste kiss, a hot demanding and hungry kiss–a kiss that curled my toes and weakened my knees. He kissed me like he would die if he didn’t, and I kissed him back because I had missed this.”

I am a total and I mean total sucker for a good second chance romance and this one takes the cake. This second chance romance transcends half of a lifetime and will play with your emotions.

When we first meet our main characters, Damian and Thea’s story starts off just like any other love story. They meet as young kids and develop an amazing friendship that turns into something more. Over time, their connection and love turns into something bigger than the both of them know how to handle. So, they will separate, go their own way, grow and hope to one day find their way back to each other. Over the years, our two beloved characters will grow and change. They will have chance meetings that will leave them begging for more. They will share moments that will frustrate you as the reader and moments that will have you praying that they will finally get their timing right….

Devil You Know is an incredible and emotional story. The characters are raw and very easy to relate to. Their story will suck you in and leave you begging and I mean begging for more. It is a story that you won’t be able to put down and that will have you turning the pages faster than you could possibly imagine. Devil You Know is not an easy story to read. It toys with your emotions and at times may have you wanting to throw your kindle. This story will frustrate you. It will make you want to pull out your hair. It will give you hope and make you not want to give up. You will fall in love and your heart will ache. And just when you think that everything is on track, some great twists will be thrown your way. The suspense and mystery will have you glued to the pages, just as much as the romance will.

Devil You Know is an amazing story and one beautiful second chance romance.

Excerpt

Before I could scan the crowd for Damian, a hand wrapped around mine…one with cuts and blood on the knuckles. It was Damian and he looked pissed.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

My heart hurt seeing his face—a cut near his left eye, blood smeared down his cheek and a blooming bruise on his jaw. “I heard you and Cam talking. I was curious.”

He had been walking me toward the exit but those words stopped him. His feet sort of rooted themselves to the concrete floor as his head turned in my direction. “So you walked here alone?”

“It wasn’t far.”

That wasn’t the right answer apparently because he hissed between his teeth. It wasn’t an actual word, just a release of frustration.

He started toward the exit again. “What are you fighting when you are out there?”

We had just reached the stairs when he pulled me behind them and pressed me up against the wall. “Come again?”

“When you fight, what are you fighting?”

“Not who am I fighting?”

“No, your opponent isn’t what you’re fighting.”

He leaned in and lowered his head to look me right in the eyes. “How do you know that?”

I gently wiped the blood from his face. “I know you.”

He had the strangest reaction to that. He closed his eyes, like he was in pain, and lowered his forehead to my shoulder. “This can’t happen.”

Those words caused a chill to move right down my spine. He was wrong. It totally could and should happen. “Why not?”

He lifted his head and for the first time I saw so much more in those eyes. “Cam is a good friend and your parents are like my own.”

“And?”His lips brushed along my jaw and I had to lock my knees to keep from sliding down the wall. “And if I did to you all the things I wanted, I couldn’t sit at their table without them knowing that I claimed every part of you.”

August Cotton shouldn’t be here. When a tragic accident calls him home to Magnolia Falls, this returned Veteran adds his parents to the list of things he’s lost in recent years, right along with his IED detection dog and his left leg. As the sole guardian of his four-year-old sister, August must rely on his Marine training in raising a tiny hellion who’s as stubborn as he is. But the Corps could never prepare him for this. Nor could they prepare him for Olivia Anders, a woman who’ll stop at nothing to get her way.

As owner of Paws for Cause, Olivia is no stranger to the broken men and women who return home from war. She’s no stranger to broken dogs either. In fact, she’s made it her mission to pair the two and enrich both of their lives, but pairing ornery and aloof August Cotton will take some work. The last thing August wants is some pushy southern woman occupying his parents’ bed and breakfast and forcing him to open up about the hell he narrowly escaped, but that’s exactly what Olivia intends.

They complete one another, and yet they can’t stand to be in the same room.

Can Olivia make this hardened Marine feel again and finally show his heart the way back home?

My Review

“She was my compass when I was so lost I couldn’t find my way.”

“I struggled not to laugh. This is what he did. He was cute and charming and he hooked you with little to no effort, and it always started with a smile. Then a laugh. Next thing you knew, he’d ripped your heart out and left you for dead on the side of the road. Or something like that.”

“It was true–this was the path he’d chosen, the decision he’d made when we were young, but at the same time, I knew better than anyone that sometimes you couldn’t see your path until you were already so far down it that there was no way back.”

Chanel Cleeton is quickly becoming one of my go-to authors in contemporary romance. She doesn’t just write books. She writes stories that will captivate your heart and take you on journeys you never expected. Her latest book, Into The Blue is exactly what I want in a second chance romance. You see, when I read a second chance romance, I want all the feels. I want to connect with the characters. I want to feel their loss and their heartbreak. And with Into The Blue, I felt it all.

Told from dual points of view, Into The Blue follows the story of Eric and Becca. Eric and Becca fell in love when they were both young and had their whole lives ahead of them. They thought everything was great and had plans to get married. However life and career plans got in the way and forced Eric to make a decision that he will regret for the rest of his life. Now, 10 years later, Eric will find himself back home. What he wasn’t prepared for was Becca. Seeing Becca again after all this time brought everything back in prospective for him. And now, Eric will find himself in the fight of his life. He’s made mistakes and this time he’s not afraid of going after what he wants….When Eric left Becca all those years ago, he didn’t just break her heart. No, he destroyed her. Slowly Becca put herself back together and threw herself into her career. But, even after all those years, Becca never forgot about the one big love of her life. So, when life and fate throws these former lovers back together again, Becca’s world is knocked off it’s axis. So, now the question is: Has too much time passed to fix all the hurt and pain? Will Becca give Eric a second chance? Will these two get the happily ever after they deserve?

Into The Blue gave me all the feels! I mean all of them. This book is so well written. It will captivate you from the very first page. From the very first page, you will be sucked into Eric and Becca’s story. And I gotta tell you, at that point, you might as well cancel all of your plans for the day, because you are not going to want to do anything else except for read this book. Chanel Cleeton has written this story and these characters in such a way that they don’t feel like characters in a book. They feel real. They feel like they are your friends and that you KNOW them. Their emotions are so strong and will feel so real, it will be as if they are your own.

Eric and Becca’s story is a beautiful one of second chances. From the moment you meet these two, you can feel just how strong their feelings are for one another. That despite all the pain and time that has passed, there is still a spark there. You can’t help but root for these two and hope that they are able to find a way past all the hurt and try again. Eric…he messed up. He knows he did, but at the time, he thought he was making the right choice. He regretted his decision instantly and let his fear rule his life. However, once he saw the error of his ways, he stopped at nothing to win Becca back. Yes, he hurt her. Yes, he broke her heart, but this man worked so hard to win her back and regain her trust. And Becca….I connected with her instantly. We’ve all been hurt in this game of love, so I knew and understood where she was coming from. I thought her reactions were justified and even though she made him work for forgiveness, it was done in the right way. Again, just seeing these two together had me praying they could find a way to move past their pasts.

Into The Blue is an amazing addition to The Wild Aces Series. It is a story of young love and the mistakes you make when you think you’re doing the right thing. It is a story about heartbreak and the struggle to move on. It is a story of hope and second chances. It is a story of forgiveness and fighting for what you want. It is a story about love and never giving up on that love, no matter how much time has gone by.

Into The Blue was just amazing from start to finish. It was beautiful, touching and at times heartbreaking. I am a big fan of this series and can not wait to see whose story is up next in The Wild Aces Series.

Excerpt

I walked into Liberty, my gaze peeled on the crowd, searching for Becca.

Easy had texted me two hours ago and mentioned that she was here, and I’d gone back and forth over whether I should come out at all. It hadn’t escaped my notice that she’d pretty much been avoiding me all week, whatever truce we’d reached in the cemetery on Wednesday apparently forgotten, and while part of me knew I should give her the space she needed, another part of me was afraid that she would use the space to keep a wedge between us.

I couldn’t apologize, couldn’t grovel at her feet, if she wouldn’t forgive me. And right now, she was a locked door I couldn’t break through. I’d thought I stood a chance, thought that the fact that she still talked to me like I meant something to her, like we were friends, meant we had a shot. But now it felt like that had just been wishful thinking, and I really had blown it with her.

So this was it. My Hail Mary, Hallelujah, final attempt at getting her to let me in. I’d caused her enough pain over the years; I didn’t want to keep doing it. If she truly wanted me out of her life, then I’d give her that.

I spotted Easy first, his arm wrapped around the same girl he’d been with the first night—a girl with hair eerily similar to Dani’s. Easy saw me across the crowd and waved me over, the girl—Rachel or something—tensing immediately at the sight of me and answering the question of whether she knew who I was to Becca.

I cut through the crowd, still searching for her, nerves rolling around in my stomach.

Easy jerked his head in greeting. “Hey, man.”

Rachel looked ready to bolt and warn Becca I was here.

“Hey, how’s it going?” I asked, glancing over his shoulder, trying to make out Becca’s features in the sea of people. Liberty was packed tonight.

His lips curved. “She’s by the bar with Bandit.”

Shit.

I didn’t know Bandit that well, but we’d been out together before, and if he was with Becca, it definitely wasn’t because he wanted to be friends.

Easy shot me a pointed look that irked the shit out of me. “Can you blame the guy?”

Fuck.

My gaze drifted to the bar, and then I froze.

Becca stood in a corner, the lights shining down on her like a fucking halo, the skirt of her dress brushing against Bandit.

She looked so beautiful that I felt it like a pang in my chest, the smile on her face one I’d seen so many times before, aimed at me. The one I’d lost. Thrown away. She looked like she was having fun, and then Bandit leaned in closer and said something that made her laugh, and her whole face transformed, her shoulders shaking, eyes sparkling.

I held my breath as her gaze drifted through the crowd; my heart hammered, waiting for the moment . . .

Our gazes locked, her body stiffening, the smile sliding off her face.

It knocked me back like a blow.

I’d envisioned finding a way to talk to her tonight, maybe dance with her, flirt with her; I hadn’t envisioned standing here with my heart in my hand, watching her flirt with Bandit of all fucking people, as what little hope I’d clung to died a bit inside.

I waited to see if she’d acknowledge me somehow, the plea that she’d throw me one of her smiles—something, anything—battering me inside. A wave, even. Just some sign that she saw me, that she still cared, that there might be a chance for us to put the past between us.

I’d missed her this week, missed seeing her face, hearing her laugh. We’d been apart for a decade, and somehow the glimpses I’d had of her had made everything harder, bringing back all those feelings we’d had for each other with a sharpness that pierced me.

Look at me. Please. Forgive me. Let me in.

I stood there like an idiot, the sound of Easy saying my name over and over again drowned out by the bar noise and the pounding of my heart.

And then she did turn, shifting her body away from me, tilting her face up to Bandit, her lips curving in a smile I knew all too well.

Jake Tucker is broken. At twenty-two, he went into the Marine Corps a naïve, troubled youth. Nine years and four tours later, Jake finds himself back on US soil, though his mind remains firmly planted in the sands of Afghanistan with the men he left behind.

Wounded, chewed up and spat out by war, Jake has only his dog, Nuke, PTSD, and survivor’s guilt to keep him company. He’s lived every day for nine years wondering when it will be his last, but there’s little comfort in the fact that he’s still standing when his platoon isn’t.

Ellie Mason doesn’t have time for broken. She’s too busy trying to put food on the table. And keeping up with the demands of her autistic son, Spencer, is sometimes like fighting behind enemy lines. But she’s loved damaged men before, and it left her wounded.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Fairhope, Alabama, Ellie and Jake find themselves running toward the sound of chaos.
