Throw Back Thursday……On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street #1) by Samantha Young

“I know you love me, Jocelyn, because there’s no fucking way I can be this much in love with you, and not have you feel the same way. It’s not possible.”

“I feel like I’m missing something really important when you’re gone. So important I don’t feel like myself. I’ve never felt like someone was mine before. But you’re mine, Jocelyn. I’ve known that from the moment we met. And I’m yours. I don’t want to be anyone else’s, babe.”

“Let me rephrase.” He took a seething step toward me. “When it comes to you… I don’t like to share.”

“Sometimes the clouds weren’t weightless. Sometimes their bellies got dark and full. It was life. It happened. It didn’t mean it wasn’t scary, or that I wasn’t still afraid, but now I knew that as long as I was standing under it with Braden beside me when those clouds broke, I’d be alright. We’d get rained on together. Knowing Braden he’d have a big ass umbrella to shelter us from the worst of it. That there was an uncertain future I could handle.”

“Sometimes words aren’t needed for you to know a change has come upon you. You can share a look with a friend that cements a deeper understanding between you, and thus a stronger bond. A touch with a sister or brother or parent that says ‘I’m here, no matter what’ and suddenly someone who was just a relative, a person you love, turns out to be one of your best friends.”

An amazing setting, incredible characters and an unforgettable story-line…….

If you’re looking for a book that will consume you, that will give you all the feels. A book full of delicious angst and an incredible pull, look no further. On Dublin Street is an incredible read that will take you on an emotional ride. It started my love affair with Samantha Young’s writing and I’ve been addicted ever since…

Jocelyn Butler has been hiding from her past for years. But all her secrets are about to be laid bare…

Four years ago, Jocelyn left her tragic past behind in the States and started over in Scotland, burying her grief, ignoring her demons, and forging ahead without attachments. Her solitary life is working well—until she moves into a new apartment on Dublin Street where she meets a man who shakes her carefully guarded world to its core.

Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he’s determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached.

But after an intrigued Jocelyn accepts, she realizes that Braden won’t be satisfied with just mind-blowing passion. The stubborn Scotsman is intent on truly knowing her… down to the very soul.

Release Day Blitz with Review: Models on Top-Danny by S.L. Scott

DANNY BY S.L SCOTT IS NOW AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE

MOT_Danny_Cover (2)

Everything you’ve heard about modeling is true, and you haven’t heard the half of it.

It’s glamorous.

It’s sexy.

And yes, the line between work and reality often blurs.

We’re not just prototypes of perfection. Models have feelings and desires, too. We may be genetically gifted, but we’re still human.

I’m only human. Yes, an extraordinary specimen that earns more in a day than most make in a year, but this eight pack didn’t create itself. I spend hours working on this body. The good looks just come natural. *Winks* Thanks, Mom and Dad.

I’m Danny Weston, Supermodel.

But one path was traded for another when I chose this career. Ten years later, I would trade my career to have it back. To have her back.

Reese Carmichael is the one woman I would give it all up for, and the only one I can’t have. Yet.

My Review

“You’ll always be home to me. No matter where we are in life, we will always find our way back to each other.”

“All patience is lost when I’m with her. My mind muddled under her scent and beauty, her restraint and poker face. I want us to be together…shit. Damn Luke and his girly feely shit the other night, dragging this all up. I’m loosing my shit and that never happens.”

“We’re not the the one time kind of love, baby.” She kisses me, then runs her fingertip over my lips. “What kind of love are we?” “We’re the insatiable kind, the kind that stays long after the other is gone, the kind you can’t deny, but you can never stop feeling. Not ever.”

Wow! Just wow! SL Scott is one evil genius. Just when I think that I can’t possibly love another book that she’s written, she goes and gives me this book, and totally blows me away….Now, I’ve gotta tell you, ever since I heard about Models On Top- Danny, I have been dying and I mean dying to get my hands on this story. And I have to tell you, this book does not disappoint! This book has it all!!

Now, if you remember correctly, we are first introduced to Danny’s character in The Resistance, so of course, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that we were getting Danny’s story. And what a fun story Danny’s was. From the moment I picked up Danny’s story, I was hooked. With lines like this: “It’s not arrogance that allows me to acknowledge this fact. It’s my hourly fee. I don’t come cheap. Some call me a supermodel, though personally, I hate that term.”, I just knew Danny was going to give me a run for my money! Danny was entertaining and sexy and so much fun. Sure he had his “supermodel” moments, but there is just so much more to him that meets the eyes. Underneath all that was a charming, swoon-worthy guy that I couldn’t help but fall in love with. Reese was a great match for Danny. The chemistry between these two was off the charts and refused to be denied; no matter how much time passed between them. And I really loved how easy Reese was to relate to.

So, what can I really tell you about Models On Top-Danny?? What I can tell you, is this: This book is incredibly well-written and entertaining. It’s such a fun read and the characters are joy to read about. Even the secondary ones, but especially Vinnie and Becs. Everyone needs a Vinnie and Becs in their lives!! Seriously though, this book was a lot of fun for me. It is sexy with a lot of heart and just the right amount of steaminess. And in the end, it’s going to leave you with the biggest smile on your face. I know I haven’t stopped smiling yet. I will also say, that as fun as this book is, SL Scott, does give you a very real look into the lives of models/supermodels. Their lives are not always as easy and picture perfect as they seem, and I really appreciate this author for showing us some of the real struggles that these models face.

There’s nothing else left for me to say other than I loved this book. I think this new series is off to a truly great start. SL Scott has once again blown me away and knocked my socks off. I can not wait to see where she’s going to take me with this series next. I highly recommend checking this book out. SL Scott Fans, you will not be disappointed.

With a degree in Journalism, she continued her love of the written word by reading American authors like Salinger and Fitzgerald. She was intrigued by their flawed characters living in picture perfect worlds, but could still debate that the worlds those characters lived in were actually the flawed ones. This dynamic of leaving the reader invested in the words, inspired Scott to start writing journeys with emotion while injecting an underlying passion into her own stories.

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She’s obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. She dreams of seeing one of her own books made into a movie one day as well as returning to Europe. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. There are three things you need to know about Fiona Archer… I would tell you what they are, but then I’d have to kill you.

But I can tell you that Fiona’s husband—the always irrepressible and often cantankerous Greg Archer—is desperately in love with his wife. He aches for her when they are apart, and is insatiable when they are together. Yet as the years pass, Greg has begun to suspect that Fiona is a ninja. A ninja mom. A ninja wife. A ninja friend. After fourteen years of marriage, Greg is trying not to panic. Because Fiona’s talent for blending in is starting to resemble fading away.

However, when unexpected events mean Fiona must take center stage to keep her family safe, her response stuns everyone—Greg most of all. It seems like Greg’s wish has come true.

Except… not.

When all is said and done, can Greg handle this new version of his wife? Will his irrepressible cantankerousness push her away? Or can the couple find a way forward without either being forced to step back into the shadows?

This is a full length, 100k word novel, and is the 5th book in the Knitting in the City Series. All books in

the series can be read as a standalone except book #1.5

About the Author

SEX! It all started with sex, between my parents. Personally I don’t like

thinking about it, but whatever works for you is a-ok with me. No judgment. The sex happened in California and much of my life also occurred in that state until I moved from the land of nuts (almonds), wine, silicon… boobs, and heavy traffic to the southeast US. Like most writers I like to write, but let’s get back to sex. Eventually I married and gave birth to 2 small people-children (boy-6, girl-4 as of this writing).

By day I’m a biomedical researcher with focus on rare diseases. By night I’m a knitter, sewer, lino block carver, fabric printer, soap maker, and general crafter. By the wee hours of the morning or when I’m intoxicated I love to listen to the voices in my head and let them tell me stories. I hope you enjoy their stories.

Review:

Penny Reid – You will never ever be bored reading any story of hers. Any chance you think you’ve been there, read that? Then it’s probably time to give a Penny Reid book a go. I can be a fickle reader at the best of times… At the worst I’m downright schizophrenic, however these books have never failed to keep me loyal…

Happily Ever Ninja is the latest instalment in the Knitting in the City series… The series follows the love lives of a group of women united by the love of knitting/crocheting/generally being awesome. I’ve personally been waiting for this book with a lot of curiosity… The character Fiona has been married to her husband Greg for a long time… long enough to already have a couple of kids… So I was so interested to see how you could approach a ‘romance’ where the 2 characters were already signed, sealed and delivered!

Turns out you can make this one of the most interesting stories in the series to date. It doesn’t rely on just one formula, instead it very cleverly mixes the mundane realities of married life with kids with the more intriguing and unexpected realities of current events and global issues that to be honest, you will never ever expect. It takes a clever touch to try and meld these together and I’m not sure that it would work every time… But under Penny’s careful guidance it just does. It works. It’s interesting, and interesting will always get my vote.

I’m not going to give away the plot, it deserves to be read and discovered. However I will say, before you read this book you really should take the time to read the short story about Greg & Fiona’s meeting (Ninja at First Sight). It will add so much more to the story if you do.

This latest offering is yet another example of everything that is good about authors who love to write different stories and push the boundaries. I love that every time I start a new Penny Reid book I never quite know what to expect. Long may it continue!

Book Review – Chosen Fool (Forever Evermore #5) by Scarlett Dawn

Blurb:

The second saga in the bestselling, Forever Evermore series continues with Chosen Fool, where deception runs deep and Caro’s transitioning life turns even more deadly…

Caroline Jules has received news of a lifetime. She’s going to be Queen to ‘her’ people. Instead of running, as any sane criminal would, she faces the mêlée with all the wits and savvy that her difficult life has honed. With her best friend, Sin, at her side, Caro pushes past the animosity her power inevitably brings, and prepares to rewrite her future.

Until the night Sin leaves, and she is alone.

Now, Caro must face the Royal world and all its intrigues and intricacies by herself. People aren’t always as they appear—and danger lurks behind even the most pleasant face. When a threat not even the Elders can handle puts her new tribe in danger, Caro takes matters into her own hands. Armed with the power of the mysterious spirit Elementals, Caro’s determined to eliminate the evil ransacking the Mysticals. All she needs is time.

But time waits for no fool…and time isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

Ok. WOW. I don’t even know where to start with this review. As soon as I start thinking about this story my mind is going in a million different directions until it feels like it’s going to implode on itself. This book was SO MANY THINGS. So many GOOD things. It was an absolutely brilliant follow-up to the 4th book, Chosen Thief, and I am in love with these new prodigies. Dare I say it…..I think I love them even more than their predecessors.

At the end of Chosen Thief we were left with a lot of questions and not many answers (yet). It was a strong start to the new series about Caro and the gang and like any series worth its weight it had me marking days on my calendar until Chosen Fools release. Chosen Fool did not disappoint. It launched us straight into the action and within the first few chapters I thought my heart was going to explode as we got some angsty insight into a couple of the well loved characters. It was the answers I had both been hoping for and dreading and god help me, all I want now is MORE MORE MORE.

The new prodigies adventures and antics easily keep the reader hanging on every word and one of the things I love best about this series is the fact that Scarlett Dawn has managed to write about a new group of characters, living in the same world and holding the same positions within that world, but has managed to make the story completely unique. It would have been easy to fall back into the same predictable pattern as the story before it but instead she’s brought a fresh and exciting new fable to the table.

The ending of this latest installment absolutely blew my mind and I’m fully aware that my whole review is full of mostly fan-girling and little of the story! But it’s purposeful! (Kind of. I didn’t mean for the fan-girling to escalate to this level but c’est la vie.) You need to read this freakin’ series (if you’re not already) and get to know these freakin’ characters ASAP then message me so we can lose ours minds together because THAT ENDING. Curse you, Scarlett Dawn. Curse you. I’m begging you, please don’t make us wait a whole year for the next book in the series!

I was warned about Tristan Cole.

“Stay away from him,” people said.

“He’s cruel.”

“He’s cold.”

“He’s damaged.”

It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.

But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.

We were both empty.

We were both looking for something else. Something more.

We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.

Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

My Review

“You know that place in between nightmares and dreams? The place where tomorrows never come and yesterdays don’t hurt anymore? The place where your heart beats in sync with mine? The place where time doesn’t exist, and it’s easy to breathe? I want to live there with you.”

This book! I have no words. You know how there are just some books that move you? They give you so many feels. They become a part of you and just consume you. You know, that book makes you want to do nothing else, but read that book? It’s that good, that it seems like time doesn’t exist? Well, for me, this is that book.

From the moment I started this book, I was pulled in. I was a goner. That prologue totally did me in and I had to read more. The Air He Breathes is told from dual points of view and follows the story of Tristan and Elizabeth. Tristan and Elizabeth are two lost souls who are no strangers to loss. They are both trying to just take one day, one moment at a time. Tristan is the man that the whole town is afraid of. He has the nickname of the town asshole and doesn’t do much to prove people wrong. Elizabeth is the first person in a long time to actually see past what Tristan is putting out there. As time goes on, the two of them bond over those that they’ve lost. For a while, it’s easy to pretend, until real feelings become involved. The road to HEA for Elizabeth and Tristan is not an easy one. It is one that is filled with many obstacles, insecurities and twists that I don’t think anyone saw coming.

The Air He Breathes is beautifully written and at times heart-breaking. Tristan and Elizabeth’s story was so real, so moving. It was exactly what a second chance romance should be. Their story filled me with hope and showed that it was ok to love again and it was ok to move on; that there is light amongst the darkness. And the writing. Gosh, the writing. It was captivating. It was  so beautiful and at times just made my heart so full. I mean with lines like these: “You don’t have to be good all the times. It’s okay to be hurt sometimes. It’s okay to feel lost like you’re wandering around in the dark. It’s the bad days that makes the good ones so much better.” or “If love was a moment, this would be where it existed.” or even “Sometimes the hardest part of existing without your loved ones was remembering how to breathe.” I was just lost in the words…..

This review is really hard for me to write because I just have no words. I don’t feel that I possess the right words to do this book the justice that it deserves; to make you understand just how amazing this read is. This book was so special. I could really tell just how much heart and soul the author put into it. For me, this book really touched my heart. I have never experienced loss the way that these two characters have, but their story, it captured my heart and really made me feel things. It’s one of those stories that I know will stay with me for a very long time.

If you’ve been thinking about reading this book, I highly recommend that you do. You will not be disappointed. This book will take you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. It will make you feel. It will touch your heart. It will give you hope. It will make you fall in love and believe in second chances. I don’t know what else to say other than I Loved This Book!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00005]I’ve loved once. I gave everything that I had to that love. Blindly believing that nothing could ever take that feeling away from me. Away from us. And when my little world of happiness was ripped from my fingers, I felt a loss that still haunts me to this day.

Now I use that lingering grief as a shield to keep my heart from loving again. It’s that fear that keeps me from letting anyone, except my daughter, get close enough to make it hurt. To make my heart bleed when I inevitably lose again.

Until the day I met Liam Beckett and everything I thought I had protected myself from was shoved back in my face.

He’s on a mission to prove to me that a love worth having is a love worth fighting for.

*Bleeding Love is the second book in the Hope Town series. It will follow Liam and Megan. Each book in the series is a HEA and can be read as a standalone.*

bleeding love teaser 3

My Review

“I want you, darlin’, to feel. That feeling your body gets when it’s sparking at every nerve. When your skin feels tight and your stomach drops. When you don’t know if your heart is beating in your chest or coming through your throat. I want you to feel the wind in your hair, pulse racing, wild, free as a bird, stomach-dropping rush. I want you to feel.” I pause, bringing my lips to hers in a soft, eyes-open kiss, “everything.”

Bleeding Love is a beautiful, emotional story. Bleeding Love follows the story of Liam and Megan. Megan has been living in the dark since she lost her husband. She uses her pain and grief as a shield to protect herself and not let anyone get close to her. She never wants to experience the pain of loss again. The only light in her life is her daughter Molly. Molly gives her a reason to live and to try to move on. Little did she know that when she met Liam, he was going to turn her world upside down. Little by little, Liam is chipping away at the walls that Megan has built. Most of the time, she doesn’t know if she wants to kiss him or slap him. But, there is just something about Liam. He makes her feel. He makes her remember what it is to be alive…Liam is a strong, determined man. He’s known since the moment he laid eyes on Megan that she was his. “I’m counting, Megan, because I want you more than I’ve wanted anything in my life and that frustrates the shit out of me because you either can’t or won’t see it. I need you to see it, baby. I need you to see.” He was so sure of things that he wasn’t going to let Megan’s fears get in the way. He was going to show her just how great life could be. He is going to break down those walls and if she’s willing to give him her heart, he will never let it hurt again…“My hold never wavers as I make true to my promise and take every single pain filled tear, every ghost of her past that comes shaking from the force of her cries, and I pull that pain deep inside and lock it tight so that it can never hurt her again.”

Bleeding Love is an amazing, captivating story. It is a story of love, loss, finding the strength to let go, move on and taking that second chance at life and love. I loved everything about this story; from the plot to the characters to everything in between. The story was riveting. I couldn’t put it down until I absorbed every last word. It was so easy to get caught up in Megan and Liam’s story.

Liam: I loved his strength and determination. He was a true alpha male. He wouldn’t take no for an answer and worked hard to make Megan “see” things. He brought Megan back to life. Gave her another reason to live. I loved that  Liam wasn’t afraid of all the baggage that Megan had. That he loved Molly as his own and would protect her with his life.

Megan: Her pain. Her loss. All so palpable. Her emotions, so easy to understand and relate to. She was an amazing mother to Molly, but really let fear rule her life. Her journey is not an easy one. She has so much to let go of and so much to overcome, but in the end, it’s so worth it.

I loved the connection between Liam and Megan. It was so strong, so beautiful. It was everything. Not only were they great friends, but their chemistry…The chemistry between the two of them just exploded from the pages. I couldn’t get enough of the two of them. I couldn’t wait for Megan to “see”.

“A love worth having, is worth fighting for.” -This is one of my favorite quotes from this book. I think it really sums everything up. This book will make you feel. You will feel EVERYTHING. You will laugh. You will cry. You will swoon. You will smile. You will find hope. You will learn to let go. And most importantly, you will fall in love…………

Excerpt #1

His mouth leaves mine and with his hand still on my leg, he demands, “Dig your heels in deep, baby.”

I give him what he wants, but not because he told me to.  I give him what he wants because when his hand leaves my leg and pushes into the mattress, bringing his body up he goes even deeper into my body and those heels push hard.

Just as he demanded earlier, my hands go to his shoulders on my own accord and as he takes my body hard, my nails dig in with my heels still pushing hard against the small of his back.  Our eyes never leave each other’s probing gaze.  Never once do I take my eyes away from his, so full of lust that I know there isn’t an ounce of control left in his body.

He drops his head and I lift up to meet him in a kiss so sweet it doesn’t match the powerful way that he’s taking my body.  A kiss that gives me more than

words ever could at this moment.  His hips slow and as his tongue rolls against mine, his hips start to take me in slow, deep rolls.  He doesn’t pull back, just rocks his hips against mine.

I push up and cry out when he slips even deeper.

His lips come from mine and his hooded eyes open a sliver.  “Feels like heaven,” he says softly.  “Everything, darlin’.  Feels like everything.”bleeding love teaser 2

Truth or Beard (Winston Brothers #1) by Penny Reid

Truth or Beard

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!
Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she’s never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…
But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica’s muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.
Certainly, Beau’s magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-headed heart is she willing to risk?

I have been acting like some next level creeper-stalker person over this book… Ever since I read the excerpt for this story in the Shiver Anthology last year I’ve been counting down the months until I could get my hands on ALL of the story. So when I finally got hold of it last week I was a very VERY happy human. Since everyone knows my Penny Reid fan status (Big, HUGE fan) I’m going to try and keep this review less on the fan-girl side and more on the explaining why I’m fan-girling so much side…. So here goes!

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters most, in the end” – Ernest Hemingway

Truth or Beard is the first instalment in the series that Penny Reid has dedicated to the 6 Winston brothers who were first introduced to us in Beauty and the Mustache. I love this idea, I love how this series connects with the Knitting in the City series. I love how we are going to get a (much) more in-depth look at each brother and his story, because they were so intriguing in BatM. And most of all I love how I just know that Penny will take each brother and create a story that is as unique as he is. Starting here, with Duane.

I love Duane! Yes, he comes across distant and broody on the outside, but once I got into his head he was so much more. The depth of his feelings made him a complex character. For a lot of the book he was battling his own emotions as much as he was battling Jessica’s. He had big plans for the two of them and no matter what he wanted to make sure everything was planned and executed to perfection so that he could give her everything that he felt she deserved. However, what Duane didn’t take into account was that life can’t be organized perfectly, sometimes you just have to live and chase your dreams. He was so busy trying to do the right thing by everyone that he almost missed out on his own dream in the process.

He nibbled on my ear, whispering my name like it was a dirty word – but not a curse word – a dirty word. Something erotic and scandalous. I had an odd thought then, that I liked my name on his lips more when it was whispered.

Jessica was instantly likeable. I loved that she was busy obsessing over travelling and experiencing the world rather than obsessing over finding a husband and a white picket fence. She had long dreamed of all of the places she would go and she was determined. So determined, that when her heart started to travel on it’s own path she had no idea what to make of it or how to reconcile the fact that even if she hadn’t planned on love, it may have found her and if it had found her, then how on earth was she going to be free to embark on her childhood dream?

Penny Reid is super duper talented at dual POVs. She knocks it out of the park every time. The tone, the subtle details, these things really make all the difference when you’re the reader. She always gets it right and this book is no different. So I LOVED having the book set up like this, the story called for it. It really added to the back and forth between Jessica and Duane. The angst of not knowing what to do next with their feelings, the hotness of the hot looks, the intricacies of their relationship and themselves… All of these things were magnified from being able to look through both sets of eyes.

…I wanted to hold on to this moment for as long as possible, because it was the first time – and maybe the only time in my life – I felt truly seen, known and understood. And I wanted to give him everything in return. I wanted him to know I saw him. I knew him, too.

So! Like I promised, fan-girling moments aside… I  FREAKING loved this book! Penny Reid is an exceptionally talented writer who never shies away from writing exactly the type of story she feels like she needs to write. I’m positive this is why her books always hit the mark and why every time I read a new one I find it harder and harder to have a firm favourite. This is a definite must read whether you are familiar with Penny Reid’s work or not. This book… This freaking book It’s definitely made it into my top reads of the year that’s for sure,

Book Review – Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras

I have been in a reading/reviewing abyss. Sure I’ve read this and that, I’ve even read some pretty great books. But I haven’t read anything a quite a few weeks that has had me needing to review it…. Until now. Kaleidoscope Hearts has broken my book slump! Hurrah!

kaleidoscope hearts

He was my older brother’s best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.

One of us did.
One of us left.

Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he’ll obliterate it

This story devoured me. I was hoping for heart squeezing intensity and I got that and more. The last time I had such a major case of the FEELS over a book was when I read BATM by the super talented Penny Reid…. So for this book to take me to that place was beyond expectation.

The first boy I fell in love with used to regale me with stories about kings and queens and war and peace, and how he hoped to one day be somebody’s knight in shining armor. I lived vicariously through his late night adventures, watching the way he swung his hands animatedly as he told his stories, and loving the way his green eyes twinkled when I laughed at his jokes. He taught me what it feels like to be touched and thoroughly kissed. Later, he taught me the pain one feels at the loss of someone that you’ve grown attached to. The one thing he forgot to teach me was how to deal with the way my chest squeezed after he broke the ghost of what heart I had left. I’d always wondered if it had been a missed lesson. Now I wonder if maybe he’d been trying to figure it out for himself, or if he just never felt anything at all.

I loved LOVED LOOOOOVED these two main characters, Elle and Oliver. These two have possibly ruined me for this genre for a wee while… Elle has been through a lot, she’s suffered loss and heartbreak, she’s not all together whole. She is perfectly broken, endearing in all of the right ways. I commiserated with her, I was angry and sad with her, I felt her hope and her passion, I felt her happiness and above all I felt her reawakening. This is a female character worth investing in. No attention to detail was spared when the author sat down to write about Elle and her story and I really appreciate this, if you’re going to read about a character who has been through so much and has so much emotional cleaning out and organizing to do you want to be able to buy it…

Oliver was written in much the same careful way, whilst maintaining that mysteriousness that we all love to see in our leading men. This guy has joined my super selective book boyfriend list. How could he not? A paediatric doctor who I’m sure leaves drooling women in his wake while being his effortlessly cool self, no he’s not without his quirks and not so fabulous bits, but it wouldn’t be a novel if he was perfect would it!

Life is short, and brutal, and painful, and it takes loved ones away from us as quickly as it brings them into our lives, but it’s also beautiful.

I think a big part of why I felt I got such a well rounded complete picture of these two characters and their story is the clever use of flashback chapters… These little gems were carefully sprinkled throughout the story and the combination not only provided a complete timeline of their romance, but also their own personal stories of growth and discovery. Love doesn’t need to be completely co-dependant, there is a beauty to watching characters grow and change and come into themselves as adults before the strings of a relationship start to pull tight.

So as you can tell I completely and utterly fell in love with this book. I would definitely read this again, and probably again after that! This book was a very lucky random find on one of my endless Amazon browsing missions. Claire Contreras can expect me to be reading pretty much anything she puts out next and I intend to go through her prior releases while I’m at it. So get ready Claire… There’s a new fangirl around and she’s super grateful to you for ripping her out of her book slump!

NEW RELEASE! Review – Drowning in the Dark (The Veil Series #4) by Pippa DaCosta

“I wasn’t demon enough to defeat my brother before. Things have changed.”

As the veil begins to fall, and the demons bleed through onto the streets of Boston, Muse knows the battle is lost before it’s even begun.

To make matters worse, Adam and the Institute have captured Akil at a time when the city has never needed him more. Muse believes Akil’s incarceration is a ruse, because if he truly is at the mercy of the Institute, she must choose which side she’ll fight for. Human or demon?

The princes are coming. Valenti, Muse’s immortal half-brother, leads the charge. The Institute is not ready, the people of Boston are not prepared, but one man is. Stefan knows what it will take to beat back the netherworld. Will his demon allow him the freedom to right his wrongs?

Muse’s loyalty will be tested. To save those she loves, she must give up that which she cherishes most. Her humanity.

The Mother of Destruction is about to go nuclear.

Can we please just take a moment to relive the amazingness that was that prologue…

…The things she’s doing to me. I am not this man. I am demon. And yet this impossible woman undermines everything. Undermines me. Burrows deep. Deep into shadows, into darkness, into facets I’ve refused to acknowledge.

Oh my LIFE Akil. The prince of Greed is seriously off kilter, it’s unsettling, especially for Muse. Common sense tells her that he is deluding himself thinking that he feels something for her. But she can’t seem to get away from the fact that his actions are trying to prove otherwise. Welcome to the very complicated world half-blood Muse. Right from that prologue I knew that I was going to be lost to this book. I have been an avid follower of this series and as the story has twisted and turned into hell and back I have had my emotions wrung out too many times to count. That doesn’t change here in book 4, in fact I think my heart was lucky to survive this instalment.

We land in this story right as the Institute makes their biggest move yet and captures Akil AKA Mammon. Muse is horrified, Akil needs to be out in Boston helping them fight the demons and Princes that are heading Boston’s way, but no one is listening to her.  Muse knows she has a limited amount of time until chaos claims her and she wants to do everything she can to prevent the two worlds from colliding. This is where Stefan comes in. He’s back and it seems that he and his demon are wanting very different things.

I don’t want to say too much more specifically about the story because you really want to be able to feel shocked, stunned and spun-out as the story demands it. Because that is one of the strengths of this series, these demons really keep you on your toes! I’m still unsure where each demon stands exactly in relation to Muse and humanity. I am in love AND hate(!) with parts of both Akil and Stefan, which is completely owing to the care Pippa DaCosta takes in her character building. Demons by their very nature should be confusing to our human sensibilities and that absolutely is achieved. I don’t know half the time if I want to love these guys or kick them! So yes, I’m conflicted. I don’t know if I should be, but I am.

Meanwhile Muse is still the badass chick I have come to expect. Even at her darkest hour, even when she feels her control slipping away. Even when she’s not sure she has anything left to give or to fight for, she pulls out the biggest guns that she can and she hits full throttle. Every. Single. Damn. Time. You can’t beat an epic female character and Muse definitely delivers.

So you need to read this book. Like you seriously need to read this book. Obviously if you’ve been following this series then you’ll already be one step ahead and will be currently reading this book… But if not then get onto it! If you’re new to this series then you REALLY need to get onto it and read all of the books! I will end with one word of warning… The ending of this book… it almost killed me, mostly from multiple heart attacks, but also from knowing that I now have to wait until APRIL to find out what on earth had just happened! (In more ways than one) I’m still slowly coming to terms with Drowning in the Dark (can you tell!) I need closure…. So I swear nothing is coming between me and the final book in this series…

Book Review – Jinn & Juice by Nicole Peeler

Cursed to be a jinni for a thousand years, Lyla nears the end of her servitude — only to be bound once again against her will. Will she risk all to be human? Born in ancient Persia, Lyla turned to her house Jinni, Kouros, for help escaping an arranged marriage. Kouros did make it impossible for her to marry — by cursing Lyla to live a thousand years as a Jinni herself.

If she can remain unBound, Lyla’s curse will soon be over. But Ozan Sawyer, a Magi with the ability to See, Call, and Bind jinn has other plans.

Oz needs Lyla to help him penetrate Pittsburgh’s steel-soaked magic, a juice potent but poisonous to supernatural creatures, in order to find a missing girl with her own mysterious connection to Kouros. Unfortunately for Lyla, becoming Bound to Oz may risk more than just her chance to be human once more — it could risk her very soul…Jinn and Juice is the first in a new series by fantasy writer, Nicole Peeler, set in a world of immortal curses, powerful jinni and belly dancing

Nicole Peeler and I have always seen eye to eye. Her Jane True series is a firm favourite of Kristal and myself. Not only does she nail the Urban Fantasy genre every single time, but her characters are everything I love and more. I kid you not, this lady can do no wrong! So how excited was I for her new book, Jinn & Juice. A new world and new characters, the possibilities were endless. Are you getting the gist of how excited I was? Well my excitement was well placed. This book delivered and then some!

The story is about Lyla, cursed to be a jinni in some wicked bargain a loooong time ago, her curse will be lifted if she can keep from being bound by a Magi (pesky humans who can bind and use jinni) Of course life is NEVER this simple and Lyla ends up bound… This is where things really get interesting. Oz, the Magi who has bound her really isn’t anything like the others of his kind that Lyla has encountered. For a start he’s kind, and he’s not selfish, and he needs her help to help someone else. From here the story twists and turns and I guarantee you wont see the ending coming.

When it comes to anything Nicole Peeler I like my heroines hilarious, snarky, kick-ass and generally pretty damn awesome. Lyla ticks these boxes easily, she is one sassy lady! Every step of the way she is nothing but authentically herself. You find out very quickly that even though as a jinni she must follow her masters orders, she still has her ways to skirt certain issues. Let me tell you, you’ll never look at a cantaloupe the same again!

Which brings me to the potential recipient of the cantaloupe treatment, Oz. At first he seemed barely a cardboard cut-out compared to Lyla’s loud and rambunctious personality. But bit by bit he won me over, he may not have smacked me over the head with other worldly pizazz, but he did add the very important carefully constructed human element that the story needed. In fact, he really was the ying to Lyla’s yang. You could tell from the start that this guy was Mr nice, and there is nothing wrong with that!

As always, Nicole Peeler’s world building was on point. Everything was meticulously laid out, from the steel poisoned magic running under Pittsburgh, right through to the magical realm, Sideways. I loved Lyla’s back story and not once did I feel like I’d learnt everything about her or this world, which personally I am all for. I don’t want to be done learning new facts about this universe and these characters, everything I’ve learnt so far has me wanting to know more. I was thankful that time was taken to explain all of the detail, but not once did the story feel bogged down by it. The weird and wonderful supporting characters obviously had a lot of care and thought put into them, creepy (Trip & Trap) AND kooky (pretty much everyone else) they really topped off an already fantastic read. I have to make special mention of Yulia, I never have been so amazed and petrified simultaneously by a supernatural creature, but this wisp had me (she also had me googling all things wisp related)….

This book is the start of what I am sure will be an awesome series.

I can’t wait.
