Releasing Sometime In March….

The Other Man by R.K. Lilley

Series Love…. (Charm’s summer reading)

Nope I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth! Although at the moment it does seem like I have a wee bit. No, here in New Zealand we are in the middle of one of the most beautiful summers we’ve had in the last couple of years, so while I have been reading… I’ve also been camping, swimming, fishing and BBQing (not in that exact order!) So in short, it’s been a busy time of sunshine fun!

Home Bay, Motutapu, New Zealand 2015

Home Bay, Motutapu, New Zealand 2015

Anyway, back to reading…We took a little break over the Christmas holidays and in that time I decided to read a series that I’ve been DYING to read forever (recommended by Kristal) AND re-read a series that I’m in looove with… So in case you’re after a new amazing series, here is a little rundown on each of them.

The Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews

Kate Daniels - Magic Bites (Book #1)

Kate Daniels – Magic Bites (Book #1)

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels)

By Ilona Andrews

This urban fantasy series is everything I hoped it would be and SO much more! I have to start by saying, if I could be anyone, ANYONE from a book then I want to be Kate. She is so badass it’s ridiculous. She gets in and gets the job done. No whining, no frivolity, no damsel in distress. She fights till the very end every. single. time.

This world where magic and technology battle is gritty, violent and not at all a kind of fairy-tale magical land. The cold hard reality is people die (often gruesomely) there are endless villains and bad things always happen to good people. I love the authors vision in these books, the world is expertly detailed and you can picture everything in your mind. A magical ward collapses? You see it buckle and shatter. A werewolf changes shape, you see it in your mind, gruesome detail and all. Like I said, the detail is just stunning.

Which brings me to my last point, Curran. Uh, this beast of a man has pretty quickly knocked all other book boyfriends off their comfy pedestals. Seriously. Oh and the chemistry between him and Kate is so entertaining that I would re-read this entire series right now just on that basis! I’m currently up to book 6 and haven’t tired of the story at all, in fact it’s taking a lot of willpower to space out these last two books instead of devouring them in 2 weeks like I did with the first 5! Whether or not you are an Urban Fantasy fan this is definitely a must read.

The Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid

The KitC Series - Neanderthal Seeks Human (Book #1)

The KitC Series – Neanderthal Seeks Human (Book #1)

Romance series aren’t always for me, I find a lot of the time I read book one and am happy with where the story ends and then voila, there’s a book two and suddenly the characters are going through all kinds of unneeded angst… This is where Penny Reid is oh so different and is also why she is one of my very favourite authors. In the Knitting in the City series each book is focussed on a different woman from a knitting circle they all belong to. So not only do we get a book dedicated to each one of them, but we also get to see their story get little mentions and begin to develop or carry on and flesh out throughout the stories of the other women too. It’s the BEST. THE BEST.

Another reason why I think I love this series so much is that these women (and their leading men) are all different and a little quirky. We’re not talking run of the mill romance… No we are talking about complete originality. Each character definitely has their own voice and their own original story. Now, the thing with this is, every time you read another book from the series you change your mind about who is your favourite character! I swear even after re-reading this series, after each book I was like ‘oh this couple is TOTALLY my fav’… until the next book where I’d be busy deciding that no, this couple is actually my fav!

His everyday voice was a thing of beauty, but his growly voice made me want to lick his face

— Sandra – Love Hacked (KitC Book #3)

I still have trouble picking my favourite book out of the five that have been published so far (potentially BatM)… I love that while they do have an order, you can read them as a standalone (excluding Neanderthal Marries Human) although I guarantee once you read one you’re going to want to read them all! Penny Reid has definitely taken this genre and made it her own with her unique and fun take on everything romance related. The women are freaking awesome, the men are freaking hot and the stories will have you laughing, crying and swooning (sometimes all at the same time). I kid you not.

Holiday Time Reading list!!! (AKA an eccentric collection of reading material)

So off on holiday I go and of course a priority is to make sure my Kindle is fully stocked with a selection of reading material. (Lets just ignore the fact I have an outrageous TBR pile at the moment) Holiday time calls for new books!!! So here’s a list of my intended reads…

1. ARC of Scenes From The City (A selection of Knitting in the City short stories) by Penny Reid

aka… the Festivus Surprise
100% of proceeds go to Toys for Tots.
This book cannot be read as a standalone. It is a collection of short scenes following the ladies from the ‘Knitting in the City’ series and will only be available in eBook format from December 1 – December 15, 2014.
‘Neanderthal Seeks Honeymoon’ – Janie and Quinn
‘Friends Definitely With Benefits’ – Elizabeth and Nico
‘Hacking the Hacker’ – Sandra and Alex
‘Beauty and the Beard’ – Ashley and Drew
‘Ninja at First Sight’ – Fiona and Greg

2. Magic Bites (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up paranormal problems. Atlanta has two factions struggling for power. Masters of the Dead are necromancers who control vampires. The Pack are a paramilitary clan of shapechangers. When Kate’s guardian is killed, she is caught between.

Magic Bites (Kate Daniels)

By Ilona Andrews

3. Seventh Grave and no Body by (Charley Davidson #7)  Darynda Jones

Twelve. Twelve of the deadliest beasts ever forged in the fires of hell have escaped onto our plane, and they want nothing more than to rip out the jugular of Charley Davidson and serve her lifeless, mangled body to Satan for dinner. So there’s that. But Charley has more on her plate than a mob of testy hellhounds. For one thing, her father has disappeared, and the more she retraces his last steps, the more she learns he was conducting an investigation of his own, one that has Charley questioning everything she’s ever known about him. Add to that an ex-BFF who is haunting her night and day, a rash of suicides that has authorities baffled, and a drop-dead sexy fiancé who has attracted the attentions of a local celebrity, and Charley is not having the best week of her life.

A tad north of hell, a hop, skip, and a jump past the realm of eternity, is a little place called Earth, and Charley Davidson, grim reaper extraordinaire, is determined to do everything in her power to protect it.

We’re doomed.

Charley Davidson love!

Tonight my BBH and I are starting our buddy read of the sixth Charley Davidson book, Sixth Grave on the Edge by Darynda Jones. To say we’re excited is possibly a big fat understatement. So, with this in mind (and with the fact I am DYING to get reading!) I am dedicating tonight’s Sunday love to our favourite Grim Reaper…

Here’s the blurb for First Grave on the Right… (Goodreads) This should give you a taste of the amazingness to come…

This whole grim reaper thing should have come with a manual.
Or a diagram of some kind.
A flow chart would have been nice.

Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an entity who has been following her all her life…and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can’t she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?

With scorching-hot tension and high-octane humor, First Grave on the Right is your signpost to paranormal suspense of the highest order.

If you like UF or even if you just like a read that will make you laugh, love and be brave then you will seriously LOVE this series. Charley has the perfect amount of hilariousness and attitude to make you wish you were her best buddy. You seriously wont get enough of her… and her penchant for naming inanimate objects. Also, just as a warning… you will absolutely end up with a book boyfriend from this series. He is hotter than hell itself. Swoon. Seriously. Read it. And when you have, swap notes with us!

Third Grave Dead Ahead

By Darynda Jones

Oh and just in case you get as hooked as we are… here is the seventh book due out later this year….

I’ve just seriously sat here for nearly 2 hours wandering through Amazon and Goodreads. Oops! But once I started I couldn’t stop! From this (very well spent) couple of hours of browsing I’ve made a little list of a few books that are being released this coming week that I personally wish I had the spare time to read! A few have actually made it onto my wish list so I’ll keep you posted!

May 13th 2014

Everyone in Bell Harbor thinks career-minded plastic surgeon Evelyn Rhoades needs a husband. Everyone, that is, except for Evelyn…sort of. Even if she did want a husband (which she doesn’t…most of the time), she’d never let something as intangible as fate determine who she marries. No, if she’s going to find someone to spend her life with, she’ll do it scientifically: with a carefully crafted list of criteria and an Internet dating site.

But when intoxicated, law-breaking Tyler Connelly crashes into her life by way of a stolen Jet Ski, unruly emotions defy common sense. Sure, he’s sexy, charming, and determined to win Evelyn’s affection, but all evidence points to him being the worst possible choice. He’s too young for her. Too irresponsible. Too underemployed. And, oh yeah, he’s her patient.

But Tyler knows firsthand how the best-laid plans can crumble under the weight of destiny. Now all he needs to do is to teach Evelyn that, in matters of the heart, love often supersedes logic.

Then, a mysterious stranger shows up at Stacy’s newspaper, seeking info for a true crime expos? he claims to be writing. Fulfilling her role as Seeker and finding out how all these pieces fit together may tear her relationship with her boyfriend apart. This fifth book in the Stacy Justice series offers more of the dazzling magic and heart-stopping thrills that have left listeners spellbound.

Bellweather Rhapsody

By Kate Racculia

A high school music festival goes awry when a young prodigy disappears from a hotel room that was the site of a famous crime, in a whip-smart novel sparkling with the dark and giddy pop culture pleasures of The Shining, Agatha Christie, and Glee

Fifteen years ago, a murder/suicide in room 712 rocked the grand old Bellweather Hotel and the young bridesmaid who witnessed it. Now hundreds of high school musicians, including quiet bassoonist Rabbit Hatmaker and his brassy diva twin, Alice, have gathered in its cavernous, crumbling halls for the annual Statewide festival; the grown-up bridesmaid has returned to face her demons; and a snowstorm is forecast that will trap everyone on the grounds. Then one of the orchestra’s stars disappears—from room 712. Is it a prank, or has murder struck the Bellweather once again?

The search for answers entwines a hilariously eccentric cast of characters—conductors and caretakers, failures and stars, teenagers on the verge and adults trapped in memories. For everyone has come to the Bellweather with a secret, and everyone is haunted.

Guns N’ Roses fans know the Use Your Illusion tour went on nonstop from 1991 to 1993. They know that concerts sold out in minutes all over the world so fans could hear chart-topping singles Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, and November Rain live. They know the Use Your Illusion tour was the last for the band with Slash and Duff. But they’ve only heard rumors of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans.

Fortunately for fans, Craig Duswalt hasn’t just heard rumors—he knows what went on backstage on one of the longest and most popular music events because he lived it.

As Axl Rose’s personal manager during the ridiculously long world tour, Duswalt experienced things that would make most people run the other way and never look back. And in Welcome to My Jungle, he shares the sometimes hilarious, sometimes just plain reckless, and always insane actual happenings on the tour.

A true must-read for Guns N’ Roses fans, Welcome to My Jungle delights readers with hilarious and entertaining exclusive firsthand stories like:

•The day Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, and Courtney Love got into a “huge war” backstage at the MTV Awards
•Why Guns N’ Roses are forever linked to Charles Manson
•The night Liz Taylor walked in on a very nude Slash—and stayed a while

Featuring little-known facts for the ultimate GN’R fan, Welcome To My Jungle gives an inside look at what it’s really like to live and work with a hugely popular band, from the middle of a rock and roll hurricane.

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, discovers a sentient book in an ancient tomb. Vella was once a young sorcerer-maker, until she was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been gathering information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.

Elsewhere, in a land ruled by the priests since a terrible war depleted all but a little magic, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows from her ability to sense the stain it leaves behind that she has a talent for it, and that there are people willing to teach her how to use it, should she ever need to risks the Angels’ wrath.

Further away, a people called the Travelers live their entire lives on the move, trading goods from one world to another. They know that each world has its own store of magic, reducing or increasing a sorcerer’s abilities, so that if one entered a weak world they may be unable to leave it again. Each family maintains a safe trading route passed down through countless generations and modified whenever local strife makes visiting dangerous. But this is not the only knowledge the Travelers store within their stories and songs, collected over millennia spent roaming the universe. They know a great change is due, and that change brings both loss and opportunity.

Loves & Loathes – 13.04.2014

So, often during the week Charm or I will be reading a book, or going about life, and absolutely HAVE to stop and text the other immediately to share something that we have come across that we love or hate. There are usually quite a few things so we decided to make a list, every week, of five things we like and five that we didn’t. This is our first one – hope you enjoy it!

Love, Love, Love

1. Charley Davidson – We both love Charley to infinity and beyond and reading the fifth Charley book this week just renewed that love. Also Reyes isn’t too bad either. (We seem to love her so much that we’ve both posted about her today! – C)

2. Happily Ever Afters – There’s just something so satisfying about everyone living Happily Ever After. Siiiigh. (For a girl with iron tear ducts you sure are a softy for HEA’s! – C)

3. Monsters! In particular Closet Monsters that are amazing Chefs! I am officially obsessed and have been wishing desperately all weekend that I too could have my own cooking Closet Monster. My life would seriously be complete. -C

4. Rock N Roll – It’s been my theme for the week. Big hair. Thumping music and the Rock lifestyle. Yep, it’s my kinda scene! -C

5. One touch buying on my Kindle…It just FORCES me to buy books…many many books. Apparently my self control took the weekend off this week. (Also see under LOATHES) It’s a double edged sword. (Agree times a million! I had a bad/totally good one-clicking weekend too – K)

Loathes

1. Love triangles. I don’t mind them when you know who the ‘winner’ is meant to be, but when its unclear, the book will only end in heartache. Usually for the reader. (Ugh! Agreed! – C)

2. Amazon sales that don’t include New Zealand. Whyyyy don’t they include New Zealand? It’s super annoying. If only there was a way to trick them… (It’s like we’re in some time warp guys! Come on!!! – C)

3. The fact we have to wait another month for the next Charley book. I am a VERY impatient person… (This month better fly by or else – K)

4. One touch buying on my Kindle…It just FORCES me to buy books…many many books. Apparently my self control took the weekend off this week. Like I said… Double edged sword. Ahem… -C

5. Wading through tons of Sci-Fi books on NetGalley to try and find the UF or paranormal ones. Boo. Maybe I’m doing something wrong… -K
