About Colleen:

Colleen S. Myers was raised in a large catholic family in the outskirts of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she grew up on Harlequin teen romances and stories from her mother’s days as a paramedic. She went on to attend Allegheny College majoring in Biology and English.

After college, Colleen spent a year in service in the Americorp giving back to the community at a local Pittsburgh Women Infants and Children Clinic (WICC) before attending Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine on a military scholarship.

Upon completing medical school, Colleen attended residency at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and was on base in Washington, DC during 9/11. She earned three meritorious service awards from the military. After serving seven years of active duty, she promptly landed a position at the VA to provide fellow veterans with optimum medical care. Colleen currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her husband and son, and spends her spare time writing. She is also working on a new contemporary romance.

My Review

“Fear of the unknown threatened to make me cry out, but I strangled it back down. We had to move forward. We had to survive and fight.”

4.5 Thrilling Stars!! Unrest was everything that I wanted in a second book and then some!!!

Unrest picks up right where Unknown left off. Circumstances are tough and the journey for Amber and her crew is not an easy one. Our beloved characters are trying their hardest to survive, just living one day to the next. And just when things are starting to look bleak, shelter is found. But, the question is, is it safe or is it a set-up? Amber and her crew have no choice but to seek shelter with the unknown and hope for the best…..

Unrest is a wonderful and thrilling addition to the Unknown Series. While a lot of my questions were answered, I was still left with many more. Unrest is full of action and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat and was feverously trying to burn through the pages, all to see what would happen next. And let me tell you, Unrest does not disappoint. While there is a lot of action, this story does kick up the romance and steam factor up a notch, but don’t fret. The romance is just a nice and much needed addition to the story. The story flows incredibly well and still stays focused on our beloved survivors.

Unrest hit the ground running and had me holding my breath right until the very end. And let me just say, that ending…..Well, that ending is going to leave you begging for more and in anticipation for what is going to come next! I for one can not wait to see what is in store for our survivors next and how this story is going to play out.

*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*

Book Review – Cardinal (Citizen #2) by Nicola Claire

Have you been a model Citizen today?

Lena Carr is a Citizen who does not exist. Being invisible can have its advantages, but not when the Chief Overseer knows what your alias is. She can no longer use the gift her father left her.

But she also can’t walk the streets as the Elite she was born to be…

The Cardinals are closing in, and one in particular has Selena in his sights. With revolution on the Citizens’ minds and hope in the form of a rebellious Elite exhibiting non-model behaviour, the Overseers crack down on dissension. Causing chaos on the streets and blood to flow.

For his “Zebra” Trent Masters would do anything. Risk his life. Face the increasingly sentient drones head on. Kill. But there’s one thing he will never do – jeopardise the rebellion. Funny thing about love though, sometimes it can make liars of us all.

But that’s not his only dilemma. Selena’s up to something, and if Trent knows his Elite, he’s sure it’s going to be reckless. Throw in a manipulative benefactor and a decimated revolutionary base and Trent can’t tell which way holds more danger. But the Cardinal, hell bent on his destruction, sure looks like he’s in the lead.

Citizen versus Cardinal. The battle has begun.

As we’re thrown back into the building rebellion in this unsettling dystopian world, it’s becoming clearer and clearer than man is no longer pulling all of the strings in this place, it’s a terrifying thought. Trent and Lena KNOW they need to fight on for change, their numbers are down and they are the most wanted citizens of Wanmei. But they need to keep going. There is a shift coming, more and more they see how there are many who in growing dissidence are willing to make a stand. Black and white hair-dos here, a zebra painted there…

I enjoyed this book even more than I did the first, I think a big draw for me in this one, was that I was beginning to see more of the relationship growing between Trent and Lena. I love these two together, their chemistry was always there sizzling away under whatever situation they were in, they were prickly as a couple of homicidal hedgehogs half the time, but slowly they are beginning to open up to one another… I loved watching this relationship unfold amongst the heart racing action they were constantly thrown (and throwing themselves) into.

Lena still kicks total butt in my opinion. That girl can do no wrong, she is awe inspiring even to the most hardened guys in their team. She knows what she needs to do, so she goes and tackles it head on, ok so sometimes she should take that advice for her personal problems… and once in a while she should probably stop and clue someone in on her plans, but that is what makes her so fantastic in my opinion. She is SO ridiculously clever. I’m all about female characters being self-sufficient and able to do anything anyone else can and she totally nails that and then some… I really loved how we still are learning more and more about her past and her secrets, the more I learn the more I’ve been able to flesh out a complete picture of her in my mind.

I have to make special mention of Trent here because I LOVE him. When he gets so frustrated with Lena you can feel it vibrating off him. When he follows her into every life threatening situation and backs her up completely you 100% believe his resolve… And in amongst all of the rebellion leader stuff you see the glimpses of the man Lena is falling for. He proved himself to her more than once, and trust me when I say you’ll almost have a heart attack at the end of the book over these two.

Nicola Claire definitely has a knack for keeping the story rolling at a steady pace, while managing to include all of the conversations and private moments that make this so much more than just characters being bounced around in a world of action. The storyline pulled me in, but the two main characters have kept me absorbed. I enjoyed the first book, I’ve loved this second book… I can’t wait to get my hands on the third instalment, I bet Lena and Trent still have a ton of tricks up their sleeves…

Book Review – Elite (Citizen Saga #1) by Nicola Claire

ARC kindly received from author in return for an honest review

Have you been a model Citizen today?

Selena Carstairs has been raised an Elite. She lives the life of privileged luxury, never wanting for anything. Respected. Admired. Honoured.

But life is not what it seems…

The island of Wánměi has a strict set of rules. Be a model Citizen and all will be rewarded. Disobey the law and the consequences are dire. For Selena, the urge to defy is in her blood. Out of boredom? Or something else? But she never knew just what penalty she’d have to pay for her latest stunt.

Trent Masters is a Citizen, born and bred. The leader of a small group of revolutionaries desperately trying to free their beloved city of Wánměi. He knows a world exists beyond the island’s borders. He knows a life exists without the heavy handed manipulation and tight fisted control of those in charge.

What he didn’t know was that an Elite would have more chance of challenging the Overseers who control Wánměi than a rebel ever could. And he certainly wasn’t expecting her to capture his heart as stealthily as she moves under the darkness of a hot and humid night.

Citizen versus Elite. The battle has begun.

Here at OUaBB we don’t get enough opportunities to read New Zealand authors. I have a few on my TBR, but I have to admit it’s been a while… So how excited was I when I got the opportunity to read this book! It’s the first in a series and while is definitely still in my range of genre loves, is almost a little on the outer edges. So… I thought I’d take a risk and read something different. The risk DEFINITELY paid off, Nicola Claire can count on herself having a new fan!

Selena on the surface has everything anyone could ever want, money, status and connections. A life that could be led in luxurious ignorance, a life that many would call her crazy for questioning. But there’s something that just will not let her accept the status quo. Something that has her out there risking more than she realizes for reasons that not even she understands quite yet. We’re catapulted into this CRAZY dystopian world with Selena taking her defiance to a whole new level, straight away it’s suspense building, heart stopping action. We aren’t given the whole story, we don’t exactly know what this world is or who Selena is… All of this information slowly begins to unravel after the event that threw us so completely into this story. It’s this technique, the fast paced action mixed perfectly with the storytelling, which really had me enthralled.

The repetitive question ‘Have you been a model citizen today’ gives you a pretty good idea of what world you’ve stepped into. Controlling society is everything. Humans are sheep. Everybody lives by the rules, everybody is ruled by fear. In this world computers will keep you in line, artificial intelligence will make sure you are doing what you’re supposed to be doing, where you’re supposed to be, with who you’re supposed to be doing it with. This is not a world with impulse, freedom or choice. The whole idea of it is such a complete mindf***!

So while the world is robotic and controlled, the main characters in this story are anything but. Selena and Trent are both fiery emotive characters. I absolutely LOVED Trent. Getting into his mind and watching the story unravel in his eyes as well as Selina’s was exactly what the story needed. He had a serious amount of heart, which I love to see in any leading man situation, but especially in leading men like him, seemingly gruff and lives for the cause. The storyline between Trent and Selina really did hold so much of the charm of this book for me. I’m always a sucker for a killer human aspect and these two had the chemistry that nailed it.

This book gives you everything yet leaves you wanting so much more. Every time you feel like something has been resolved you realize there is still so much more to come. I loved that it’s set up this very detailed world and this storyline for the series and it has a firm direction. I LOVED that there was obviously a cliffhanger element but I didn’t feel like throwing my kindle at the wall in impatient frustration. I love that I’ve found a new series obsession, something a little out of my norm that I can’t wait to follow on into book 2 & 3. If you’re looking for a book to mix up your usual reading list then I seriously recommend this to you. I’m positive you’ll be like me and won’t be able to put it down!

Wednesday Anything – Loved Divergent! Great movie.

Posted on

I ended up seeing Divergent last night. What a great movie! Epic is definitely the world I would use to describe it. I love that dystopian business.

One of the biggest things that stood out for me, was how the movie looked so much like I imagined when I read the book. It was almost familiar. Crazy!

There were some hideously awkward parts that almost had me shrinking down in my movie chair but that’s a sign of a good movie. When it makes you FEEL what that characters are feeling. I think I even blushed a little for Tris at one point there. And Four…Reow.

The movie wasn’t enough to make me change my mind about reading the last book but maybe I will see the final movie after all. If you haven’t seen this yet GO SEE IT! Today. Now. You wont regret it.
