Evelyn

I pray to be forgiven for my sins, but the prayers of someone like me won’t dare breach the edge of heaven.

Sins. All sins are equal in the eyes of God, but I’m not God. Some sins are far more wretched than others. And those sinners should pay, Evelyn. One sinner made me his sin, and I can’t let men like him live. They must face their judgement, Evelyn. I want to kill them. Every. Last. One.

Ezra James is no different, and I wanted to kill him, I needed to kill him, I’m was going to kill him…And then I found myself fascinated by him, obsessed and possessed in the most reverent of ways. I became his sinner, and he became my sin, but the wages of sin is death, so I must kill him.

Ezra

The son of a whore, raised by gangsters, moulded into a key player in a corrupt world ruled by money and completely without morals.

This world can break a person. I’ve seen it time and time again. I never gave a shit, until the night I watched a man drop dead at the feet of a woman so broken she made even me feel whole. My little killer called to my depravity and everything in me demanded that I take her, possess her, own her.

Some monsters hide behind the faces of angels, where others stand in plain sight.

Damned. Broken. Irredeemable.

Through blood, absolution shall be found.

Review: Dirty Ugly Toy by K. Webster

dirtyuglytoyHer time is over.
Things are looking up.

She’s dirty and ugly.
He’s wicked but handsome.

Six months to toy with her.
Six months of vacation and a ton of money.

I’ll hurt her beyond repair.
I’ve been through much worse.

She’s difficult to control and doesn’t obey.
I’m done submitting to anyone or anything in this life.

I should hate her.
I should hate him.

The game has changed.
I will win.

Dirty Ugly Toy is a novel that blurs the lines of right and wrong, deals with abuse, contains dubious consent, and adult subject matter. If you are sensitive to violent sexual situations, the book may not be suitable for you. Some parts of this book are not easy to read and are not intended for everyone. However, those that keep an open mind and stick with it will not be disappointed.

My Review

“I want to escape from this world. To go and go and go until I run off the page of the infinite universe. TO crawl around in the never-ending, quiet blank nothingness. My own personal heaven. My escape from Hell.”

Wow! I don’t even know where to start with this review. My mine is a complete and utter mess. I am emotionally drained and exhausted from the ride that I just went on. When I first started reading this story, I had no idea what I was about to get myself into. And that’s one of the things I love most about K. Webster’s books. I never know what I’m going to get and I love it. I am constantly surprised and in awe of this author’s writing range.

What can I say about Dirty Ugly Toy? Well, the title kinda speaks for itself. You should expect the unexpected and go into this story blind like I did. Dirty Ugly Toy is dark, gritty, and sexy. It will take you on an intense and intriguing ride. It pulls you in from the very first page and practically dares you to put it down.

When we first meet up with Braxton, I was intrigued. He’s rich and powerful, but he has twisted tastes and desires. He likes to find broken women and fixes them up and plays with his “toys” until he no longer has a use for them. In the search for a new “toy”, Braxton finds Jessica. At first, he thinks she is just like the others and can not wait to break and use her. But, all too quickly, he finds out that Jessica is nothing like the others. Jessica is strong and determined. She doesn’t mind the rough side of Braxton and welcomes his inner sadist. This response only serves to confuse Braxton. He finds himself questioning everything. What will happen when Braxton finally realizes that Jessica is nothing like the others? Will Braxton be willing to change his sadistic ways? Will these two lost souls get their HEA?

Gosh, I don’t even know what to say. This book. It is so different than anything that I’ve read by K. Webster before. She took me on a dark journey, that I wasn’t so sure was going to have any light. These characters are both broken and lost. You can’t help yourself from wanting to know more about them and wanting to know why they are the way that they are. There were moments when I hated and I mean loathed Brax, but then he would do something sweet; something normal and I would find myself hoping that he could change. I desperately wanted him to redeem himself and become the man that I knew he could be.

Dirty Ugly Toy will take you on an unexpected journey, with lots of twists and turns. This story will shock you. It will frustrate you. It may even make you want to throw your kindle across the room. But, in the very next breathe, you will find your heart aching and hoping that things will change. With lines like this: “He is my savior–he pulled me from the wreckage that was my life. I’m not losing him without a fight. I will fight for Braxton Kennedy. Even if it means fighting against him to have him. I’ll make him mine.” and “You’re the sun that warms both inside and out. The world was way too fucking cold before you stepped into it.”, you just really want to root for these two lost souls, no matter how twisted their situation is. And in the end, you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat, just waiting to see what will happen next, just as I was.

Once again, K. Webster has knocked it out of the park. She has taken me for a journey to the dark side and really made me fall in love with these broken characters. This last quote that I found, I think is utterly perfect. If someone asked me to describe this book or my feelings about it, I would say, read this quote. This quote is everything……“This moment is perfect and real. And I want to live in it forever. Two torn, brittle, ratty souls weaving together as one and creating something new and perfect.” I have no idea what K. Webster has in store for readers next, but I for one can not wait to see where she will take me next!

Excerpt

“Tell me something,” he said, overtly switching gears. “What’s with you and Chris Blakely?”

He’d been watching me at the Expo, then. Before he’d come outside after me.

His question about Chris was spoken casually, but it was purposeful. A more naïve woman might have missed it, but I was too experienced with men like him. He wanted me to know that I was in his sightline. That this was what it meant to be part of his life. That he would monitor me, if he felt like it; he’d rule me. And he expected me to submit.

I couldn’t decide if that freaked me out or thrilled me.

So I played coy. “He’s an actor. We’ve worked together on occasion. I guess we’re friends.”

I walked into the kitchen and got a glass from the cupboard. Chewing my lip, I filled it with filtered water from the sink and debated full disclosure regarding Chris…It was a long shot, but since I hoped to contact Chris for more information about Missy at some point, I decided the less I said the better.

I drank some of my water then set the glass down and leaned across the counter to watch Reeve. His fingers trailed across the spines. I couldn’t see the exact books, so I tried to think what was there. My Katherine Hepburn autobiography. My copy of Rebecca.

He stopped and pulled one from the shelf then flipped through it lazily. This one I recognized from the cover. PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, one of my coffee table books. I collected them and had so many that most lived on my bookshelf rather than on my coffee table. This particular book was a printing of blog posts that shared secrets anonymously. Parts of it read like my diary, and I’d marked several pages with Post-it notes so I could easily come back to them. Reading it had always felt comforting.

Seeing it in Reeve’s hands, though, wasn’t comforting. He flipped through the pages, stopping on the ones I’d tagged. Chuckling at some. Growing somber at others. At one, he lifted his head toward me and nodded slightly as if confirming what he’d just thought, what he’d just read.

I ran through several confessions I knew by heart, trying to imagine which it had been—

Again and again. Used.”

“I’m more scared of court than I was when he almost killed me.”

“I would do absolutely anything in the whole world if I thought it would make her happy.”

Whichever ones he was reading, any of them—all of them—were private. Too private for him to know spoke to me. Yet, I didn’t stop him. I let him sink one layer deeper under my skin.

It was bad enough that he was in my apartment—in an apartment that I paid for myself. His presence reminded me of a time when everything I owned had been given to me by men. The things I had now, though small in number and worth, were all mine.

Trying to distract myself from the anxiety Reeve’s invasion caused, I asked, “Why do you want to know about Chris anyway? Do you want me to fix you up? He’s got a fiancé, you know.”

Reeve shot me a glare. “Cute.”

He put the book back on my shelf and moved toward me. When he reached the counter, he said, “Chris doesn’t look at you like he has a fiancé.”

Ah. I’d forgotten Reeve was a jealous man. Or I’d underestimated the depth of his envy. Strangely, it was a fairly common trait of the kind of men I’d involved myself with in the past, the kind of men who had everything. I knew how to pander to them, knew what to say to put their insecurities to rest. No one could ever be man enough to compare with you, I’d say. It might have been what Reeve was looking for in regards to Chris.

But I couldn’t bring myself to give it to him. “A lot of men don’t look at me like they have a fiancé.”

Reeve leaned across the opposite side of the counter so we were face-to-face. “I don’t like that.”

Jealousy was generally boring, yet, on Reeve, it was fascinating. And, I suspected, dangerous. “You don’t? What are you going to do about it? Lock me up and never let me out in public?”

“I have some nice secluded resorts I think you’d like. My island properties are so beautiful you’ll forget you’re in a prison.”

He flashed his dimple. It was subtle, only noticeable when he smiled in a certain way, the way he was smiling now. And his eyes…I’d thought they were blue, but now I saw green flecks. They caught in the light. They caught me in them, made me feel warm. Made me feel trapped.

I stood up straight, distancing myself without moving away. “Look at you. Acting as if you have some claim to me. I think I already blew you off the other night.”

“Look at you, acting as if I’m a person that you blow off. I think I already warned you about me.” He was teasing as I’d been. But he wasn’t all at the same time.

My heart skipped a beat. “Another threat?”

“If you want it to be.” He looked at me like he had earlier—that intent way that saw through me, into me. Saw all my dark parts.

In a way, he was showing me his darkness as well.

My lip quivered, but I wasn’t scared. Well, not scared enough. “I do.”

His eyes sparked, and with that simple phrase, we entered into an agreement. He would have me. He would fuck me. He would bring me into his world.

And in return I’d let him break me.

Review: Denial (Careless Whispers #1) by Lisa Renee Jones

denial

Ella Ferguson awakes alone in Italy, unsure of who she is, and a gorgeous man has claimed her as his own. He’s tall, dark, and sexy, with money and power, the kind of man who makes a girl want to be possessed. And he does possess her, whispering wicked wonderful promises to her, stealing her trust and her heart. Soon though, the past finds her, yanking her from a cocoon of passion and safety. Everything is not how it seems. The truth will shatter her world, but it can set her free, if it doesn’t destroy her first.

My Review

“He does not treat me like that wilting flower. He is demanding. He is the wolf. And this is the part of him I want to know, the part he tames, but I want set free. And I am free with him.”

Exciting. Thrilling. Mysterious. Confusing. Sexy. Those are just a few words to describe Denial by Lisa Renee Jones. Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I have been dying to get my hands on Ella’s story for quiet some time. Ever since her character was introduced in the Inside Out Series, I have been dying to know more and more importantly, I’ve been wanting to know where Ella went and what happened to her. I would love to say that I got some answers to my questions, but I know better than that. Denial gives us just a little taste of what has been going on.

Denial starts off with a bang and we find Ella waking up in a hospital with no recollection of who she is and where she is. She remembers NOTHING. All she knows is that this mysterious stranger found her and saved her life. From the moment Ella sees Kayden, the two of them share an instant connection. Kayden feels very protective and possessive of Ella. He claims that he wants to help her gain her memory back. But, who is Kayden and Can he be trusted?? Ella feels safe with him. And as much as she wants to be cautious, it appears that only Kayden is on her side. So, together, the two of them work to restore Ella’s memory. But, only time will tell if Ella will remember things….

Denial is a fast-paced and intriguing story. You are pulled in from the very first page and will be left on the edge of your seat, wanting to know what will happen next. This story is sexy, mysterious, captivating and down right intriguing. You will be desperate to find answers, but will only be left with more questions. Who can you trust? What happened to Ella? Why doesn’t she remember anything? What is Kayden hiding? I have so many questions and I can not wait to find out those answers!

I will warn you that Denial does end with a cliffhanger and boy is it a good one! It is one that will definitely have you begging for more and desperate for those answers! The stage has been set. Denial has kicked this series off to a great start and I can’t wait to see where it will go next!

Review: Ricochet by Keri Lake

Front CoverThe only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

A beautiful wife.
A son.
A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit ‘safe’, ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I’m cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise—to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I’m no longer Nick Ryder. I’m a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose—one who’s seen the dark and violent truth behind the city’s flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn’t know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I’ve kidnapped his beautiful wife.

An eye for an eye—isn’t that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn’t destroy me first.

WARNING: **Not recommended for readers under the age of 18 due to graphic violence, sex and strong language. Trigger warning for self harm.

My Review

“Monsters did exist. They didn’t hide under the bed, though. They stormed through the fucking door and stole away everything we loved.”

“Perhaps hope wasn’t such a cruel bitch, after all. Apart, we were nothing but two broken halves, but together, our jagged edges fit perfectly, sealed into something whole again. In the end, he saved me, and in return, I saved him. Eye for an eye, heart for a heart.”

Wow! Holy freaking wow! I don’t even know where to start with this one. Talk about one intense ride! Ricochet is unlike anything that I’ve ever read before. Fans of Dark Romance, this tale is a must read for you!!

I had absolutely no clue, other than the synopsis of this story, as to what I was getting myself into when I picked up this book. All I knew was that this was going to be a dark read. And let me tell you, this book was dark. It was intense. It was gritty. It was gripping and all consuming. I was hooked from the very first page. My eyes not believing the words that they were reading. I couldn’t put this book down. My mind refused to let me. Even when I would take a brake, I found myself quickly picking up my kindle to find out what would happen next.

What can I tell you about Ricochet? This is one of those books that you’re either going to love or you’re going to hate. And believe me when I tell you, I had lots of love/hate moments with Aubree and Nick’s tale. This is one of those books that is best to go into blind. I loved not knowing what was going to happen or what was truly going on. I found myself so lost in the story. So consumed with what was going on and literally blown away by every twist and turn. And let me tell you, this book has some of the best twists I have read.

Ricochet is one of those reads that is not for the faint of heart. It is dark and twisted and times flat out disturbing. But, if you can let yourself get past all that you will get a very well written and consuming story. The characters are so raw and captivating. This story will take you out of your comfort zone, but I gotta tell you, it is so worth the ride. This story will take you on one raw and intense journey. This is my first book by Keri Lake and she has definitely made a fan out of me. I can’t wait to read more of her books in the future!

My Review

“I’ve been tortured and on the verge of death, violated for the amusement of my captures. Through it all I’d never lost that edge that kept me alive. That fight. The thing inside that makes your heart beat so fast it feels like it’s going to beat its way right through your chest, and tells you that no matter the situation, you’ll not only get the fuck out of it, but you’re going to burn every motherfucker alive who tried to take you down. I’ve been beaten, but I’d never been broken. Until Thia….”

Holy Freakin’ Wow!! This. Book. I was not prepared for this book. I expected it to be dark. I expected it to be gritty. I expected it to be intense and take me for a ride I’d never forget. What I did not expect was to fall in love. I did not expect to find this side of Bear. I did not expect to find myself caring so deeply about these characters. I did not expect that the story would end in a way that would have me freaking out and wishing I had the next book in my hands right now. No, I did not expect those things. But, you have to know that when a book exceeds your expectations, you have a darn good read on your hands.

I can’t say much because I don’t want to spoil this book for you. It is best for this story to be experienced and go into the story completely blind. That being said, I do highly recommend that you read both King and Tyrant before you try to read this one. It will give you a better understanding of what you are getting yourself into. So, what can I say about Lawless? Well, I can tell you that it is intense. It is hold on to your seats, it’s going to be one crazy ride kind of intense. So, grab a bottle of wine and settle in, because you are going to need it!! So, yes, this book is intense, but I gotta tell you, it’s got a lot of heart in it too. We get to see a side of Bear that we’ve never seen before, but have been dying to. Bear is Intense. Damaged. Messed Up. Possessive. 100% Alpha. You can not help but want to know more about this damaged man. And Thia brings out things in Bear, that Bear was not prepared for. She makes him want to be a better man and she makes him CARE. “We were two tortured souls. Both in more ways than one person should ever have to experience. But we found each other. We needed each other.” The connection between Bear and Thia is off the charts! These two have some seriously intense chemistry and I honestly loved the two of them together. What they shared was so fierce and I really felt the depth of it by the end of the story.

And speaking of the ending, I have to warn you, it does end with a cliffhanger and it is one heck of a doozy. It’s one of those cliffhangers that has you wondering what in the world is going on and has you completely frustrated that you don’t have the next book in your hands right now!! I am so excited and can not wait to get my hands on the next book. I have to know how everything is going to play out. I definitely recommend checking this book and this series out!

Excerpt

“I’m going to remember this as the worst time in my entire life. The very worst.” She shook her head. “There is nothing I can do to change that.  Girls my age are playing sports, going to dances and parties, kissing boys.  And that’s never been me.  I’ve had a full time job at the grove and a part time job at the Stop-N-Shop. I’ve done nothing over the last few years except work my ass off and watch my family fall apart. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse…now all this.”  She waived around to the house and to me and let out an awkward laugh. She took another hit off the bowl, passing it back to me.  Her coughing much less than it was on her first try.

“Ti, how old are you?”  I asked, clearing my throat as I ventured into territory I knew I shouldn’t.  She was a pistol, even if she was a sad one, but there was a wave of innocence about her that had me both feeling bad for her and salivating for a taste of her.

This is for her, not you. I told myself.  It was only a partial lie.

“Seventeen,” She said, sniffling.  “Eighteen soon.”

“You ever been kissed?” I asked, her eyes met mine. “And not a peck on the cheek or a brief smack of the lips, but a real fucking kiss? One that leaves you without air in you lungs and your thighs pressing together in search of more?”  I said, my voice coming out deep and strained.  My cock coming alive at the thought of tracing my tongue along her pump lips.

“Why?” She whispered, and as soon as the words left her mouth I knew there would be no coming back from what I was about to do.

I pushed off the fire pit and pulled her up off the chair, pressing her tits into my chest and my straining cock against her stomach.  I tipped her chin up and looked into her confused emerald greens. She followed my thumb with her eyes as I traced her bottom lip.  There were too many lines marring her face, questioning what it was I was up to.  I knew she would try to pull away at any second, try to stop me.  But it was too late for that.

I was beyond stopping.

Just one taste.

“Answer the question,” I pressed.

“No,” she said with a slight shake of her head, and before she could try to argue, I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers.

I was already going to hell.

Might as well enjoy the ride there.

My Review

“That one word–spark, the beginning to a fire, a storm brewing, a desirable connection between two people..”

What a great addition to the Syndicate series. The Redemption of Roan is told from dual points of view and is Roan and Alina’s story.

Roan is the next in line to take over the family business, but before he can do that, he’s got one last, but very important loose end to tie up; he’s got to get revenge on his brother Royal. Sounds easy enough, right? It was a simple idea until he set eyes on Alina. Once he saw Alina, he knew that there was no way he could continue on with plan. He found himself impossibly drawn to Alina and was thirsting for a chance to get to know her…..Alina may be a mafia princess by title, but wants nothing to do with the life. She wants to help and heal people, not hurt them. She’s finally returned home after many years abroad, hoping to get a fresh start, but she will be pushed to the limits, when Royal returns to her life. There are things about her past that no one knows about. See Royal has hurt Alina in the worst way possible. And now, Alina has found herself an unlikely and unexpected ally that will finally get her some justice from the pain Royal has inflicted. The last thing Alina was prepared for, was to fall for Roan, Royal’s brother. Terrified of what she is getting herself into, Alina will quickly learn that Roan is nothing like his brother. He wants to worship and protect Alina, no matter the cost. And when Royal comes back and begins to bring havoc and chaos into their lives, they will find themselves tested in ways they didn’t think was possible…..

The Redemption of Roan was a really great read. It was dark and intense and sexy. I was captivated by Roan from the moment I met him. I wanted to know more about him and loved his alpha personality. I loved how he was with Alina. At first, he wanted to use her to get to his brother, but then when he saw her for the first time, he knew that using her would be an impossibility. There was no way he could hurt her. In fact, he found himself needing her and wanting to protect her. I loved Alina and how strong her character was. She went through a very tough and intense experience and kept it to herself. She somehow managed to put it behind her, survive and create a life for herself. She had some reservations about Roan in the beginning, but I gotta tell you, I was so happy that she gave him a chance. The two them had some amazing chemistry and I just couldn’t wait to see where their story would go.

The Redemption of Roan is fast paced and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next. The story-line and the characters are so intriguing. You’ll find yourself desperate to know more about the characters and their stories. Yes, this story is dark and pretty intense. It does deal with some serious and at times intense subject matter, but it was handled in a very respectful way. That being said, this story is not just a dark tale, it does have plenty of romance, sexy good times and swoon worthy moments. I enjoyed everything about this story from start to finish and as this story wraps up, we were given a little taste of what to expect when the next book comes out, and I gotta tell you, I can’t wait to see where the next story will go!

Review: Perfect Ruin (Unyielding #2) by Nashoda Rose

perfect ruin

Kai

There is nothing I care about.
No attachments.
No connections.
Outwardly, I’m a perfect gentleman.
Until my target sees my knife.
I fear nothing, not even death.
In my world, death is considered a privilege.
But my life comes with unbreakable cruel strings and
when I met her, I should’ve walked away.
I didn’t.
I was too selfish.
And that sealed her fate.
Because one week with me led her into the hands of ruin.

London

We all have unique layers that make up who we are.
What makes us vulnerable or strong.
What we fear and what excites us.
But peel back those layers and you’re left naked and exposed.
They did that to me.
Each piece was slowly stripped away then burned.
I merely existed.
But there was one layer they overlooked.
The most important of them all—the tie to one man.
The man responsible for me being this way.
The man who found me.
And the killer who would do anything to protect me.

Perfect Ruin is the story of Kai and London.

My Review

“I will always come for you, braveheart.”

“I never thought I’d love so firecely that it ruined me. Because no matter how I looked at it, that was what he did to me. Kai ruined me. For other men. For life without him. I’d hated him. Feared him. Desired him. Needed him. And loved him.”

Wow! Just wow! Nashoda Rose has done it again. I am totally blown away by the intensity and awesomeness of this book. Perfect Ruin is the second book in the Unyielding series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but is highly recommended that you read the first book beforehand. I have not read the first book in the Unyielding series and although I was not lost, I should warn you that there will be spoilers for that first book, so reader beware.

Perfect Ruin was a fantastic, action packed story, from start to finish. You will be taken on one heck of a rollercoaster ride. I loved every second of this book. It captivated me from the very first page and didn’t let go for one single second. I loved that this story was told from dual points of view and you really get to experience the pain, the heartbreak, the devastation and the romance throughout the years.

As a fan of the Tear Asunder series, I loved seeing the parallel between that series and this one. It gave me a little more insight to what Sculpt and Emily went through in Torn From You and if anything, I was more intrigued. I had a thirst to find out answers and a thirst for some much needed justice for all of the characters.

So, yes this book is intense, but that’s not all it. It is a story about survival. About doing things you never thought you would. It is a story about finding yourself again, when all hope is lost. It is a story about hope; hope is a dangerous thing in this world that Nashoda Rose has created, but even with everything these characters have gone through, they still have hope. And lastly, this is a story about love; intense, life altering love. “I didn’t know what love felt like, but what I felt for her was indescribable with a single word. It was more powerful. It was all consuming. “London, what we are can’t be explained with  a word, only experienced.” Kai and London may seem like an unlikely pair, but the connection and passion between these two is like no other. They are the perfect match. The light to the darkness.

Perfect Ruin was an intense and thrilling read for me. I couldn’t put it down and devoured it in one sitting. What I love most about this book, is the writing. It will take you out of your comfort zone with the intensity and the darkness, but it’s so well written that you can’t put it down, even if you tried. And there is so much more to this story than the darkness. There is light and there is love and there is heart. This is one of those stories that will completely captivate you and the story will linger with you long after you read THE END. Would I recommend this book to a friend? Yes, I absolutely would. I can’t get enough of Nashoda Rose’s writing and I definitely can not wait to see where this series will take us next!

Blurb

When Emily Wayborn goes home to visit her mom while on hiatus from her hit TV show, she receives a voicemail from her former best friend, Amber. Though the two were once notorious party girls, they haven’t spoken in years. Although the message might sound benign to anyone else, Amber uses a safe word that Emily recognizes, a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what’s more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.

Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis, a hotelier known for his shady dealings and play boy reputation. Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But as she finds herself more entangled with him, she finds she’s drawn to Reeve for more than just his connection to Amber, despite her growing fear that he may be the enemy. When she’s forced to choose where her loyalty lies, how will she decide between saving Amber and saving her heart?

Excerpt

“I hope you’re nice and relaxed, Emily. Because we need to have a chat.”

Apprehension fluttered in my belly. Chatting was definitely not the direction I wanted to go in from here. Whatever he had to say, I couldn’t possibly listen. I was too agitated.

But without him spelling it out, I knew that was the terms of this arrangement. He’d touch me—in his way. And I’d listen, whether I wanted to or not.

So I propped myself up again and gave him as much of my attention as I could.

“It’s interesting,” he said, his thumbs doing that amazing thing on the bottom of my foot, “how people respond to you when they believe you’ve gotten away with murder.”

My stomach dropped. No speech that started with murder had a happy ending.

“Most people are frightened of you,” he said as his hand stroked up my shin. “They pull their business. They stop attending your events. They certainly won’t let themselves be seen with you. It’s not really anything to fret over, losing those connections. You don’t want cowards in your court. Good riddance to them.”

“I’m not a coward,” I managed to say defensively. Though I wasn’t sure why I was defending myself. Or why I was anxious that he might mean good riddance to me when that was probably exactly what I should be wishing he meant.

He glanced up at me, amusement in his features. “No, you’re not. You’re not scared. Or you’re not scared enough.”

I barely fought the shiver that begged to stutter through my body. It was a menacing statement, and I wanted to deny it as well. Tell him that I was definitely scared enough. But what the hell did that mean, anyway? Considering how turned on I was despite everything I’d learned about him, still turned on despite the foreboding in his tone, well, maybe he had a point. I really wasn’t scared enough.

The amusement transformed to what looked more like awe. Then his attention fell back to my leg and I couldn’t see his face well enough to read him. But after he pushed my ankle back so that my knee bent, his touch changed. A single finger traced the line of my inner thigh. Softly. Sweetly. Just as he got to where I so wanted him to go, he abruptly stopped. One second passed. Two.

Then he resumed the firm pressure from before, reclaiming his restraint. For now.

I could wait.

His speech continued, his voice firm, icy. “There are other people, too. Those that respect you. They aren’t necessarily your friends, because they’re also scared—probably even more so than those who keep their distance. They continue their financial support of your endeavors. They invite you to their parties. Their children’s weddings. They look out for you. Because, you see, they’re afraid that if they don’t…well.”

My heart hammered in my ears. Suddenly I was feeling vulnerable in a way that had nothing to do with my nudity and all to do with the frailty of my size compared to the strength of his.

As if to prove that point, Reeve increased the pressure of his kneading, digging his fingers into the flesh of my thigh with a bite that sang and stung. “It’s a very intense form of power, actually. Much like having money. I’m sure you’ve gotten a taste of that with the recent success of your show. Imagine that but multiplied by a billion.”

“Mm hmm,” I said, a response that served as an answer though it was mostly an involuntary reaction to his hands. He’d reached the top of my limb again. Like before, the tips of his fingers brushed against my folds.

Goddammit, I was wet. And trembling. And overwrought with anticipation. This time, would he let his touch wander farther up? In?

His hands left me. He pushed my leg down, pulled the sheet back over my leg and pinned me with narrowed eyes. “It’s also not unlike the power of being a very attractive person. Another privilege that you understand.” He scanned the length of my body, the sheet still a barrier between us, and let out an audible breath. “I imagine you must understand it very well indeed.”

It was an accusation. The grit in his voice and the weight of his stare said so. Fucker. Whatever hopes I’d had for this whole scene of his, it was clear now that his intent was not friendly. Punishing, more like. I still wasn’t sure for what exactly. For being in his pool. For using my beauty to draw his interest. For coming onto him without his permission. I’d thought his humiliating body search had been all the reprimand I was getting. Guess I’d been wrong.

My eyes fell. However, a glance at his crotch gave me the slightest smidgeon of satisfaction. He was unmistakably hard. He might be punishing me, but he was punishing himself too.
