Throw Back Thursday………Sweet Evil (Sweet #1) by Wendy Higgins

“He was smoking hot. As in H-O-T-T, hott. I’d never understood until that moment why girls insisted on adding an extra t. This guy was extra-t-worthy.”

“We have to face difficulties to find out what our true strengths are. How we come back from failure is a very valuable test.”

“Wait,” Kaidan called from behind me. I squeezed my eyes shut for a second, but kept walking. Then I felt his hand around my
wrist, spinning me in a half circle and pulling me to his chest. His face was so close. He reached down and cupped my face with one
woolly hand, and wiped the top corner of my lip hard with his thumb. I flinched back.
“What are you doing?”
“I…” He appeared to have no idea himself. “I wanted to see your freckle.”
A vulnerable tenderness flashed across his face, more painful to see than the coldness. It took every ounce of strength I had not to
beg for one last kiss. As fast as his expression had softened, it was back to stone again.
“What do you want from me, Kai?”
“For starters?” His voice lowered to sexy, dangerous depths. “I want to introduce myself to every freckle on your body.”
A powerful shiver ripped through me.”

“The beauty of poetry is that it can mean different things to different people at different times.”

Even after all this time, reading these quotes, I have all the feels!! Seriously Kai!! Ugh!! Sweet Evil to this day is one of my favorite paranormal romances. I know it is listed as YA, but this is more Mature YA. It is sexy, seductive, intense and full of action. I couldn’t get enough of this book. And once you meet Kaidan and Anna, you will totally understand. Their story sucks you in from the very first page and I promise you won’t be able to put it down.  It had everything I look for in a great read: Romance, Betrayal, and Heartbreak. It is fast paced and there is never a dull moment………

As the son of the Duke of Lust, Kaidan has learned his father’s ways, becoming a master of passion, a manipulator of chemistry. Disobeying his father would mean certain death. Thankfully for Kaidan, he’s good at his job. And he enjoys it.

Until he meets Anna Whitt—sweet, smart, feisty, and inexplicably good—the one girl seemingly immune to his charms. The daughter of a guardian angel and a fallen one, she has a certain power over him, one that makes him wish for more than he could ever deserve.

Determined to save all the Neph from their dark lives as the influencers of sin, Anna joins forces with Kaidan to overcome the demons’ oppressive ways. In the light of her affections, Kaidan must undergo his toughest test of all, a battle of the heart.

Sensual and swoon worthy, this companion volume to the acclaimed Sweet Evil series from New York Times bestselling

They now call me a Leviathan. A monster.

And maybe I am.

I know one soul who believes that with every part of his being.

If only he knew the truth.

If only I could make him see that I’m more than the surface of lies I spin. That I’m more than someone out for their own gain. I wish he could see—know who I was before all of this. The person I desperately cling on to that is still inside of me. The person I must protect.

One day I hope to hand him the key to the fortress that is my heart.

I just hope he doesn’t give up on Love and throw it all away…

I hate Love.
***

I’m looking at her.

There’s an innocence to her that she keeps carefully hidden.

But I see it.

Inside of her is someone that she has revealed to no one.

Not even me when I once thought we were in love.

Of course now I know that was all a farce but still, she hid that even from me.

But not now—now, I see more.

My Review

“Love will fall into you one day and when it does, fight for it brother, every step of the damn way. Walk through fire for her, slay dragons for her, and forsake everything for her. Love will be worth it”

Omega & Love has taken me completely by surprise. With the way things ended with Alpha & Omega, I was curious about how Omega’s life and how the choice he made would play out. And I’ll be the first to admit, I was not sold on Love. She lied to Omega and tricked him. But….when I read this quote: “If he only knew the truth. If only I could make him see that I’m more than a surface of lies that I spin. That I’m more than someone out for their own gain. I wish he could see–know who I was before all of this. The person I desperately cling on to that is still inside of me. The person I must protect.” I knew that there was more to Love than what meets the eye and I couldn’t wait to find out.

Omega & Love starts off right where Alpha & Omega left off with Omega. He’s trying to get used to the life he’s chosen and is doing what he can to forget about Love. He wants to hate her. Forget about her. But, that proves to be easier said than done. Especially when the boss has plans of his own….Love has made a lot of mistakes. She keeps a part of her hidden from everyone. She didn’t want to betray Omega, but she wasn’t left with a choice. She had a reason for her actions. If only Omega would listen. But, why would he? He hates her, right?! Now, they are tasked to work together and that may prove to be one difficult challenge. Will Omega open his eyes to Love’s truth? Has too much damage been done? When the time comes, who will win the battle of good vs evil?

I absolutely loved Omega & Love’s story. I easily devoured this in one sitting. I was hooked from the first page, desperate to know more about Love. Why does she do the things that she does? Who is Love really? So many questions that I had. And I was so happy with what I got. There was so much more to Love. She was a lot stronger than I gave her credit for and never let anyone see the real her, until Omega.

Omega, what can I say. He was hurt so badly by what Love did to him. He tried and I mean tried hard to forget Love, but in the end, he couldn’t. In the end, he realized that what he and Love shared was real. It was something worth fighting for. “Every time you try to push me away, I am going to crawl into where it is you go and yank your ass out of there. No more running. No more hiding. You’re mine, Love, and I’m willing to battle for your heart”  I couldn’t help but fall in love with Omega when he said that.

One of the things that I really loved about this book was the themes. Good vs Evil. Right and Wrong. K. Webster did a wonderful job of weaving the religious aspects into the story. She did it in a way that it’s there, and it captivates you. It makes you think, but the way that she does it so that it’s not in your face. And this quote pretty much sums up the feelings I had while reading this book: “Why does there have to be a heaven or hell? Good versus evil. Why can’t there just be this? Us. Omega and Love. Forever

Omega and Love was a quick and easy read for me. The story was captivating and I loved getting lost in the characters. Omega and Love is a great story about redemption, good vs. evil, deceiving appearances and a second chance at life and love. This story had the perfect mix of angst, romance, steam, action and suspense. I was on pins and needles towards the end, holding my breathe, wondering how everything would play out…

I loved finally getting see Omega and Love’s story. Their journey to HEA was a great one. K. Webster fans, you need to get your hands on this one! It does not disappoint!

Review: Vampires of Manhattan by Melissa De La Cruz

Posted on

vampiresofmanhattanThe Vampires of Manhattan is “hipster horror”–the memorable characters from her Blue Bloods series are older and cooler than before, trying to build “Millennial” lives in the bustle of Manhattan while battling forces of evil and, of course, each other.

Hero of this sexy, paranormal action tale is Oliver Hazard-Perry, former human conduit, and Manhattan’s only human-turned-vampire, now the head of the Blue Bloods Coven. When his all-too-human lover is found murdered on the eve of the coven’s annual Four Hundred Ball–a celebration meant to usher in a new era in vampire society, and to mark the re-unification of the Coven after decades of unrest and decay–Oliver is devastated.

Now, not only is he trying to create a new world order for the immortal elite, he’s the prime suspect and is stalked by the newly installed head of the vampire secret police. Because according to the new rules, vampires who take human life can now be executed. Burned.

How can an immortal sentenced to die fight back? He has to find the killer–and the answers lie deep in vampire lore.

My Review

Vampires of Manhattan is sort of a spin off, but more of a continuation of the Blue Blood series and takes place about 10 years after Gates of Paradise. The main characters are now grown up. It’s been 10 years since Lucifer was defeated. A lot has changed. There is now a new leader of the coven. The time has come to show the world that they will no longer be living in the darkness, they are alive (well as alive as the undead can be ;)) and they’re not going anywhere. And to top it all off, they’re bringing back the Four Hundred Ball. Life is anything but easy, especially when Pentagrams start showing up everywhere. A human girl is murdered and it’s made to look like a vampire did it. You will find yourself asking Why is this happening now? Who is behind all of this? What is really going on?

I thought Vampires of Manhattan an ok read. It did take me a little while to get into the story, but once I did, I was hooked. It was a fast paced and told from multiple points of views. This is my first book by this author. I didn’t feel too lost by not having read Blue Bloods first. There were a few times where I felt like I was missing something, but for the most part, I wasn’t too confused. I will say that my interest about Blue Bloods is definitely peaked and I’m definitely looking forward to checking it out. Fans of the Blue Blood series, I think you will be very happy. As readers, I think we tend to always want more. We get so lost, so involved in a story or character, that we don’t want to say goodbye. We want to know what happens after the final book ends.

I think this series is off to a good start. It’s got mystery, suspense, romance, drama and of course some great paranormal aspects. I wouldn’t say that this book ends on a cliffhanger, but more of a to be continued. I am definitely curious and interested in seeing where the story will go from here.

Review: Descent by Tara Fuller

Posted on

descent

Easton doesn’t believe in love. He believes in Death. Darkness. Sin. As a reaper for Hell, it’s all he’s known for over four hundred years. When he gets slapped with the job of training the boss’s daughter, an angel who knows nothing but joy, he knows he’s in for a world of trouble.

Though he’s made it clear he wants nothing to do with her outside of work, Gwen would do anything to get closer to the dark and wounded reaper—even taint her angelic image and join the ranks of her father’s team of reapers. But in all her planning, she forgot to factor in one thing—how far the demons Easton doomed to hell would go to get revenge.

When the dangers of the Hell threaten Gwen, Easton will do whatever it takes to save her. But as the darkness closes in on them both, will he be able to save himself?

My Review

“Love was a product of the work that we did. The kisses, the intimate whispers, the innocent touches that meant more than words could ever express–these were things that I’d never have. Things I was never supposed to want. I was merely the spark to ignite the flame. I was never meant to experience the burn.”

I know I say that I don’t get a chance to read a lot of YA books that often anymore and I think that is something that I need to change. This book is another great example of why I love this genre. I have always been a fan of paranormal romance. I love a good angel/demon story and this one was just fantastic.

Descent follows the story of Easton and Gwen and is told from dual points of view. Easton is the reaper from hell. He doesn’t believe in love or happiness. He’s only known death and darkness for the past 400 years. The last thing he planned on was meeting Gwen. While going to reap some souls, he encounters Gwen and another angel. He’s intrigued by them. They just radiate goodness and are distracting him from doing his job. See not only has he been reaping souls for Hell, he’s also been helping bring souls to heaven. And that’s what he has to do, bring a soul to heaven. Unfortunately, by having to do that, he’s counting on his partner to bring the other soul to heaven. And lets just say, his partner didn’t fully understand what was being asked of him………

Gwen is an angel of joy. She’s lived in a “bubble” for the past 17 years, only seeing happiness and joy. Seeing a soul getting reaped first hand has a lasting effect on her. She wants to know more now. She no longer wants to be shielded from the bad. She wants to see and understand it all. What does that mean exactly? Well, looks like Easton has a new job. Easton is supposed to show Gwen a few reaps and scare her back into the world that she’s always known. Little did he know that Gwen had a different mission in mind. Just how far into Hell is Gwen willing to go to complete her mission? Will she really be safe with Easton? Will Easton be able to protect Gwen at all costs?

I have to say, I was immediately drawn to this book because of it’s cover. Then I read the synopsis and knew I just had to read this book. I was pulled in and captivated by this story from the first page. The plot was so refreshing from what I normally read. One of the things that I loved was the mature feeling of the book. I didn’t feel like I was reading a YA book. I loved the world-building. The author gave such great detail to what her vision of Hell would be. It felt very realistic and was very easy to visualize.

I was intrigued by Easton as soon as I met him. He had a darkness to him. He was so sad, so broken. I just wanted to know why he was the way that he was. I enjoyed watching his character grow throughout the story. He went from unfeeling and not caring about anything or anyone to seeing that maybe he does deserve goodness and love. That maybe there is somethings that are worth fighting and sacrificing for. And Gwen…So curious. Always wanting to fix things and people. Feeling that pull to take ones pain away. Never wanting to give. She was such a strong character. A lot stronger than most people gave her credit for.

Descent was a quick, but enjoyable read for me. The characters so intriguing. The story-line captivating. It made me laugh and swoon. I loved the push and pull between Easton and Gwen. I loved the angst, romance, action and paranormal elements. Overall, I just really enjoyed this story. This is my first book by this author and I’m really looking forward to diving in and reading the first two books!
