Review: Deception So Deadly by Clara Kensie

Posted on

Book One in Clara Kensie’s YA paranormal thriller Deception So series, Deception So Deadly was originally published as the Run to You serial parts 1 – 3, and is the winner of the prestigious RITA© Award for Best First Book.

RUN. It’s all sixteen-year-old Tessa Carson has ever known. Hunted by a telepathic killer, Tessa and her family have fled home after home, hiding behind aliases to survive. Her scars are more than just physical, and as the only one in her family without a psychic ability, she lives a life of secrets, lies, and fear.

After the Carsons flee to a new hideout and take on new identities yet again, Tessa meets confident, carefree Tristan Walker. Their attraction burns fierce, but she runs from him too, knowing their love can never be true when she can’t even tell him her real name.

But Tristan has secrets as well—secrets that will either save Tessa, or destroy her. The only way Tessa can save her family—and uncover the real reason they’ve been hunted all these years—is to forget everything she’s learned from a lifetime of running away, and run straight into danger head-on.

Danger. Deception. Betrayal. It must be first love.

My Review

I first picked up this book/serial series back when it came out in 2014 and I remember totally falling in love with it. It was the first of its kind and I thought it was so unique. I couldn’t get enough and certainly couldn’t wait for the next episode. So, imagine my surprise when I heard that these serials were going to be re-released with a new title and a new series. It’s been many years since I’ve read this books, but I couldn’t wait to dive in and re-read it again.

From the moment I picked up Deception So Deadly, I was once again hooked. I immediately remembered why I fell in love with this series to begin with. From the brilliant storytelling to the writing that captivated my heart and begged me to keep reading; I couldn’t get enough. It was everything I wanted in a  YA paranormal romance. With suspense around every corner, not knowing who you can trust and surprising twists; this book had my heart racing and I couldn’t help but devour each page. I had to know what would happen next and how Tessa’s story would play out.

For me, It was wonderful to revisit this story and this world that author Clara Kensie has created. It was like coming home in the best possible way. I look forward to revisiting this series again when Deception So Dark re-releases next year. If you haven’t had a chance to read this book yet, I highly recommend picking this one up.

Excerpt

If I’d known I was going to die on my sixteenth birthday, I probably would’ve spent a little time on my makeup that morning. As it was, I lay in the field, cold, and all I could think was that I hadn’t even bothered to run a brush through my hair before I left. I mean, at the very least, I could’ve worn earrings. It started to rain, softly at first, and I felt my teeth chattering. No, not felt. Heard. I heard something else, too. Jared sobbing. Loudly.

It was funny—I’d known him all my life, and I’d never heard him cry before. Would he be crying so desperately if he hadn’t been the one who shot me?

AUTHOR INFO:

When she’s not donning her secret identity and saving the world, Thiessen keeps busy writing her next novel, reading something beautiful, teaching high school English, drinking coffee, cycling, and hanging out with her family – husband, kiddies, and miniature schnauzer.

Excerpt:

It was the prickle on the back of his neck that warned Blade he was being followed.

Slowing his steps, he forced himself into a casual stroll as he checked out the streets of Bonne, Louisiana. He feigned interest in several glass storefronts that lined the town square, nodding toward the occasional pedestrian who studied him with blatant curiosity—and if he wasn’t mistaken—which he rarely was—a thread of fear.

Clearly, the small town thirty miles south of Baton Rouge didn’t get many visitors.

Of course, it was possible that the men stared because he was six foot four with the hard muscles of a trained athlete that flexed and rippled beneath his faded jeans and ivory thermal shirt. And the women…well, their gazes were clearly trained on his short gold hair, midnight eyes, finely chiseled features, and those wide lips that normally smiled with a charming ease, but were now pressed together with grim determination.

Turning onto a side street, he thankfully found it all but deserted. The town had obviously never been a bustling metropolis, but over the years it’d faded to a sleepy village. Which meant he could deal with his stalker without unwanted attention.

Maintaining his leisurely saunter, he passed by an abandoned gas station that was next to an empty lot. The breeze tugged at his short hair, chilling his skin.

Louisiana had two seasons. Hot and humid. Or cool and humid.

Today it was the latter.

Come on, my friend, he mused to the male who was tailing him. Just another couple of blocks and we can…chat.

At the edge of town, it didn’t slowly ease from commercial to residential to suburbs like most places. It just ended. As if the thick woods ahead of him refused to give way to progress.

Turning, his back to the stand of trees now, he folded his arms over his chest and studied the seemingly empty street.

“Show yourself, Hiss,” he commanded in a low voice.

Alexandra Ivy is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library.

Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Laura Wright is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”

Throw Back Thursday……A Matter of Fate by Heather Lyons

Posted on

This weeks Throw Back Thursday to goes to one of my absolute favorite reads. I would say this book is Mature YA/NA Crossover. If you are a fan of paranormal romances and fantasy, I’d highly recommend getting your hands on this book. It is consuming and torturous in the best possible way. With lots of love, frustrating moments, action, betrayal and craziness that just tugs at your heart, this is a must read!!

“Love isn’t always clean and pretty–sometimes it’s messy, cruel, and confusing. And sometimes, it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. But then, the beauty of love is that it’s very strong, and when it’s real, it’s worth it.”

Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn’t a normal teenage girl. She’s a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she’s a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she’s to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.

That’s nothing compared to the boy trouble she’s gotten herself into. Because a guy she’s literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.

Chloe’s once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.

My Review

“You. Are. Mine. You run, I’ll chase you. You hide, I’ll find you. You even think about another man, I’ll kill him.” “Everything that’s happened since I met you has been for you.”

Wow! Wow! Wow! Talk about a book that hits the ground running and doesn’t let let up!!! Wolf’s Mate is fast paced, action packed with some seriously steamy moments and a few twists along the way.

Told from multiple points of view, Wolf’s Mate follows the story of Declan and Abby. From the moment we meet Declan and Abby, you can just feel the chemistry and tension rolling off them. Their connection is instant and their romance, one of insta-love, but I gotta tell you, this is one of those books where the insta love just works. Abby was a total game changer for Declan. The moment he laid eyes on her, he knew he had to claim her as his. But, things won’t be easy for these two. No, fate is going to make them fight hard; not just for their lives, but for their love as well. With danger around every corner and not knowing who to trust, there certainly is never a dull moment for these two shifters.

Wolf’s Mate is my first book by this author and I know it won’t be my last. I easily devoured this book and couldn’t wait to see how it all was going to play out. I enjoyed every moment. From the danger, to the romance. To the sexier than hell alpha shifter and the shifters’ inner dialogue. Wolf’s Mate was a ton of fun and I can not wait to see where this series is going to go next!

EXCERPT

There was nothing sexier than a man—half-naked and sexy as hell—in the kitchen.  Declan opened an upper cabinet and grabbed a pan, stretching to reach handle.  The move made his jeans drop just a hint, exposing more of those muscles she wanted to lick and nibble.

Her center clenched, clit throbbing with a surge of desire, and she bit her lip to keep her whimper in check.  Then… then he made it so much worse—better? He set the pan on the stove and went to the fridge, tugging on the door so it swung open.  It gave her a clear view of his back, of the play of muscles while he moved, the way they slid beneath his skin.  That was when he made it all worse.  He leaned down to peer into the space, attention firmly on the fridge’s interior.

Meanwhile her attention was firmly on his ass.  She wanted to bite and nibble him there, too. Okay, she wanted him everywhere, all of him.  Oh, she wouldn’t destroy herself in that way—Declan was dangerous, heartless—but that didn’t mean she couldn’t ogle. A lot.

“You done staring, yet?” Laughter tinged his words and she wrenched her attention from his ass. He remained bent over and peeked at her from beneath his arm. She met his teasing gaze for a split-second, his twitching lips enough to make her face flush, and then shot her stare to the ground. “Or should I go ahead and strip for you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she mumbled.

“Liar.” His chuckle turned deep and dark, like smooth chocolate that lured her forward a step before she realized she’d moved. He straightened and turned away from the fridge, nudging the door closed with his foot.

His bare foot.

Could feet be sexy?

Abby’s cougar purred.  Apparently.

“Come eat.” He placed a carton of eggs and bag of shredded cheese on the counter.

“You keep trying to feed me.” She steeled herself for being so close to Declan without touching him.

“Because you need to eat.”  He didn’t give her a spare glance, just cracked an egg on the edge of the pan, a nice sizzle following the move. He tossed the empty shell in the sink and then focused on her, blue eyes intent. “You need to be prepared for what’s coming.”

“Coming?” Her heartbeat stuttered, her banked fear resurged and threatened to take over.

Declan’s eyes bled amber for a moment, flickered between man and wolf, and he refocused on the stove. “A team is hunting you on behalf of the director.”

“I don’t know what that means.” Or rather, she didn’t want to know.

He was quiet then, attention wholly on the frying pan as if his cooking decided the fate of the world. The longer he ignored her, the more nervous she became until she simply couldn’t take it anymore.

“Declan?” He didn’t make a sound, just flipped the second egg onto the plate and slid it across the counter

“Sweetheart,” he murmured, blue eyes back and staring deep into her soul. “Until we know more, you’re with me. Once we’re holding all the cards, we’ll figure out our play. For now, it’s just us.”

Review: Wicked Bite (Realm Enforcers #5) by Rebecca Zanetti

Posted on

If you love the Dark Protectors, these wicked hot Realm Enforcers are for you!

As she hunts for a drug lord killing her fellow witches, all Tessa Lansa’s instincts point to the Grizzly motorcycle club. That might be because their leader, Bear, is the strong, silent shifter type: warm brown eyes and more muscle and alpha male than any woman can ignore. Which makes Tessa’s plan to seduce and betray him all the more dangerous . .

Bear doesn’t trust the curvy, blue-eyed witch. But Tessa can heal the injuries that sap his strength. And since he can’t stop thinking of her lush body and teasing smile, her plan to mate him to reclaim her own power is highly tempting. Just one problem. Once a desire this wild is loose, no one will ever control it . .

My Review

“There ain’t nothing convenient about a mating.” “Possession is too tame of a word to describe what mating with me would carry with it.”

“Her limbs tinged with life–with energy. Every mating was primal, but mating with an alpha, an alpha shifter, took it to another level. She wanted this. For now, for today, she became lost in it.”

As a fan of the Dark Protectors Series, I have been dying and I mean dying to get my hands on the Realm Enforcers Series. Now, I should tell you that I have not read any of the previous books in the Realm Enforcers Series, but when I read the synopsis for Wicked Kiss, I just knew I had to dive in and read this book!!

One of the things that I really loved about this book was that despite the fact that I haven’t read any of the previous books in the Realm Enforcers Series, was that I could jump right in and read this book as though it was a stand-alone. Wicked Bite was very easy for me to read and I couldn’t help but devoured every single word. The world that this author has created is not only captivating, but is utterly consuming. The characters grab you from the very first page and will have you begging and pleading for more. I just loved it!

Wicked Bite has it all. From a fascinating and entertaining story-line, to strong and determined characters. To sexier than hell chemistry and exciting twists. To action and danger that only Rebecca Zanetti can deliver. This book does not disappoint and will have you blowing through the pages to see how the story will play out. I loved every second of this story and can not wait to dive into not only the previous books in this series, but I am also super excited to see where this series will go from here!
