I call myself tenacious.

One of the most powerful attorneys in Charleston, I don’t let anyone or anything stand in my way.

Until a chance encounter changes everything.

One glance.

One touch.

One night.

It only leaves me wanting more.

But Grace is off limits. Most people would even say forbidden.

Everyone knows an attorney can’t sleep with his client.

Too bad I already did.

And even with the threat of losing everything, I don’t know if I can stop myself from having her again…

All of Me – a Confessions of the Heart forbidden, stand-alone romance

“I warned you who I was.” Selfish. Greedy. Incapable of love. The devil.”

“I learned at a young age that I was the sun. It was up to me to make the world gravitate around me.”

“I felt it again. An overwhelming surge of heat washed over me from behind. Something dark, almost sinister, an open invitation to step into his expensive brand of sin.”

“When she looked up at me with a river of mascara running down her cheeks, I fucking forgot everything. My mind. My sanity. My reason.”

As much as I want to say I was ready for Ian’s story, I can honestly say that no way was my heart ready for it. Ian and Grace’s story was nothing like I thought it was going to be. Was it forbidden? Yes. But it was so much more. It was a story of two lost souls trying to make the most out of the cards they’ve been dealt. A story of second chances and dreams that you never thought would come true. A story of love that will capture your heart and will definitely get under your skin.

Ian has had a tough life. He’s done and seen things that no one should have to. He’s cocky and arrogant. He doesn’t let many get close and doesn’t do relationships. The only thing he’s looking for is power and a good time. The one thing he never saw coming was Grace. Their attraction was instant. From the moment he saw her, he just knew she would be a game changer. He perused her unlike any other woman. One night of passion will never be enough. But, when Grace wants to hire Ian as an attorney, everything changes. Ian & Grace find themselves in a battle of a lifetime. There’s so much to lose, but neither one can stay away…..

All of Me grabbed me from the very first page and had me hanging on to every single word. In true A.L. Jackson style, the writing is captivating and will just slay you. The story weaving its way deep under your skin and leaving you absolutely breathless. The characters are absolute perfection. Both lost and damaged, yet completely perfect for one another. Her wanting the dream that any woman would want. A good man. Someone to fight for her. Someone to love her. Someone to take a chance on HER. And him…he never believed he was good enough. He sees himself as the devil for the choices that he’s had to make. Feeling as though he doesn’t deserve any kind of love and happiness. His demons so hard to battle, but Grace waking up things in Ian that he was so utterly unprepared for. These two made me want to believe in love. They made me want to believe in second chances. I wanted them to take a chance on what they wanted. I wanted them to find peace. I wanted them to find happiness. And boy oh boy was I rooting for them to find their happily ever after.

All of Me is a beautiful and heartbreaking love story that will just take your breath away. It’s sexy. It’s sinful. It’s forbidden. It’s a story filled with pain and passion, hurt and longing, hope and fear. This story took me on a journey that I never saw coming and yet I loved every single moment of it. A.L. Jackson has once again taken my heart for an incredible ride and I loved getting lost in Ian & Grace’s story.

Review Tour: Tragic by Devney Perry

Kaine Reynolds wants nothing more than solitude. After an unthinkable tragedy destroys his family, he’s cut off all ties to his former life so he can battle his grief the only way he knows how.W

So when Piper Campbell knocks on his door, rambling on about being his new neighbor, he slams the door in her face.

But Kaine’s gruff demeanor doesn’t scare her. She’s set on living in Montana and starting over after a terrible divorce. And she wouldn’t mind having a fling to chase away the pain of her husband’s betrayal. Her handsome, albeit rude, neighbor is the perfect candidate.

Yet what neither of them suspect is that their no-strings affair will result in the surprise of Piper’s lifetime—and Kaine’s worst fear.

My Review

“She needed  strong partner. Someone sure. Someone as sturdy as the wood slabs in my shop. Not because she couldn’t stand on her own, but because a weaker partner would pull her down. She needed someone to lift her higher. Someone like me?”

“I was falling in love with my grouchy, tormented neighbor. I was falling for a man who was sweet and kind. I was falling in love with a man who had a little magic of his own.”

“I always maintained that line in the sand. There were no lines anymore. I would cross them all. Piper Campbell had broken past all my walls and made me fall in love with her. She’d work her way into my broken heart, filling the black holes with light.”

“Somewhere along the line, you stole my heart, I’m going to steal yours in return. Just wait and see.”

Tragic is a beautiful and emotional second chance romance. It is a story that is sure to tug on your heart strings while giving you all the feels.

Told from dual points of view, Tragic follows the story of Piper and Kaine. Fresh from her divorce, Piper wants nothing more than a fresh start and to put the past behind her. She’s not looking for anything serious, but a fling might be just what the doctor ordered to mend her broken heart…..Kaine wants nothing but to bury the ghosts of his past and deal with his grief in his own way. He’s found solitude in the mountains of Montana and is happy with the status quo. All is going according to plan until a new neighbor moves in. When his gruff exterior doesn’t scare Piper away, a fire is ignited in Kaine. Feelings he thought were buried have been put to the forefront. Passion is ignited and lines will be crossed. Will a no strings attached fling be what the doctor ordered or will it turn Kaine & Piper’s world upside down….

Tragic is the kind of story that just grabs you from the very first page. The prologue just tugged at my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I was instantly hooked and couldn’t wait to read more. Piper and Kaine’s story is the kind that I just love to get lost in. It’s consuming and makes you feel so many emotions. It’s the kind of story you can’t help but devour because you don’t want to put it down. And honestly, there’s nothing better than a second chance romance that digs its heels into your soul.

Piper and Kaine had me from their very first encounter. Kaine’s pain and heartache was so palpable. He was so closed off. In fact, he was quite the jerk at times. He just had so many demons he was trying to keep at bay. But, I just knew under all that gruff exterior was an amazing man. I lived for the moments when he would let you in. Those moments when he was unguarded and real. He was a truly sweet and passionate man. And when he fell in love….oh, boy! All bets were off. And Piper….Ugh! Her story was heartbreaking as well. She had such a big heart and had so much love to give. She could have let her divorce destroy her, but instead, she had this amazing outlook. She wasn’t going to give up. She had a calming way about her and was just the balm that Kaine needed in his life…He just didn’t know it yet.

Together Kaine and Piper were an unstoppable force. Both looking for peace and solace and instead found an all consuming love that they never expected. I loved their passion and determination. Life threw so many obstacles at these two. Both of them hurt and betrayed by the ones they loved. Kaine’s demons really struck a chord with me and I can’t even count how many times my heart broke for him. It was no wonder that he had a hard time dealing with his emotions and didn’t know how to handle the feelings that Piper brought out of him. I just ached for the moment when everything would be ok and those demons would finally be laid to rest. The road to happily ever after wasn’t an easy one for these two, but I truly enjoyed every moment of it. The good. The bad. The ugly. The parts that hurt. Kaine & Piper didn’t just save themselves, they saved each other.

Tragic is a beautiful and heartbreaking story. It’s a story of two broken and lost souls just trying to find their way in the world again. It’s a story of healing and forgiveness. A story of escape and learning to move on. It’s a story of taking that leap towards love and fighting for what you want. So many times I found myself with tears in my eye and in the next moment I was swooning over Kaine. Yes, that broody, gruff man knocked me off my feet and I just swooned over the love he had for Piper.

In the end, Tragic is one of those stories that I know will stick with me for a while. It’s so incredibly well written and it’s definitely one of those stories that I would recommend having tissues near by for. Kaine & Piper’s story captivated me and left me speechless. I’m still so full of emotions as I’m writing this review and hope that all of my feelings make sense. I just loved every single moment of this story from beginning to end. If I could give this story a million stars, I totally would. Tragic is definitely a top read for me from this author.

Release Blitz with Review: Seduce Me by Kelly Elliott

What happens when you’re forced to seduce the one person you vowed never to love?

You get screwed … in more than one way.

I walked out of Tucker Middleton’s bedroom seven years ago, leaving him hurt and angry. Now I need his help; the only way I can get it, is to make him think I want him back.

The only problem is we have silently vowed to hate one another for the rest of our lives. In order to get Tucker to help me—I have to seduce him.

Easy right?

Hell yes! I’m the CEO of CMI Consulting. If I set my mind to something, I make it happen.

Charleston Monroe is playing me for a fool. If she believes for one second I’m going to let her walk into my life to help her save the very job that ripped her away from me, she’s got another thing coming.

She thinks she can seduce me, and I let her believe she can. After all, I’m getting what I’ve always wanted.

My Review

“I had fallen for Tucker the first time he grabbed my hand and walked me into the movie theater with our group of friends. To him it was a friendly gesture…to me it made my entire body come to life. I knew then he was going to be my kryptonite.”

“Anything for you, Charlie. You’re my fucking weakness. Always have been, always will be.”

Seduce Me is the first book in an all new and exciting series from author Kelly Elliott. Seduce Me is fun, flirty with a great pull and a romance that I just can’t get enough of. This story is the kind that I just live for and can’t get enough of.

From the moment I picked up Seduce Me, I was hooked. I was totally, completely, 100% addictive to these characters. They were fun. They were entertaining. They made stupid mistakes, but at the same time were determined and knew what they wanted out of life. I loved getting to know Charlie and Tucker. You could tell from the beginning that these two had unfinished business and I for one couldn’t wait to see how their story would progress. These two might have been separated for 7 years, but the sparks and flame were still there. The passion and chemistry between them; undeniable. And I just loved their banter. I never knew what they were going to say next and I loved that they kept me on my toes.

The road to HEA for Charlie and Tucker wasn’t an easy one. Mistakes and hurt from the past definitely was a hard thing to overcome, but once the truth comes to light, there’s no stopping these two. Did Charlie and Tucker frustrate me? Yes, absolutely. I didn’t know if I wanted to strangle them or hug them. But, I gotta tell you, all that frustration….it just added to those incredible will they/won’t they moments. At the end of the day, you could tell these two cared for one another a lot more than they let on, but they let fear rule their lives. For me, it was a lot of fun watching them try to figure things out and fight for what they really wanted.

Seduce Me is the first book in the Austin Singles Series and boy does it kick off this series with a terrific start. I live and breathe for story-lines like Charlie and Tuckers. Their story was just filled with delicious angsty moments, a great push and pull, and a love that’s worth fighting for. Seduce Me gave me all the feels and took my emotions on one crazy ride.

I loved every single moment of Seduce Me from beginning to end. It was fun. It was sexy and full of steam. I loved the characters. I loved their drama. I loved their fight. And I just can not wait for more. This series is off to one amazing start and I’m excited to see who’s story this author will have me falling in love with next.

Review Blitz: Secrets (Web of Sin #1) by Aleatha Romig

The twisted and intriguing storytelling that you loved in Consequences and Infidelity is coming back at you with an all-new alpha anti-hero in the dark romance series Web of Sin, by New York Times bestselling author Aleatha Romig. ”

I’m Sterling Sparrow. You’ve no doubt heard my name or read it on the top of tall buildings. There’s more to my business—my realm—than what is seen above ground.

Within the underbelly of one of America’s largest cities lives a world where a man’s word is either his most valuable tool or his most respected weapon. When my father ruled that world and that city, he promised me someone who would one day make my reign complete.

Since that day, long ago, Araneae McCrie has been mine.

She just didn’t know.

My father is now gone.

The city and the underbelly are now mine.

The time has come for me to collect who was promised to me, to shred her life of secrets, and make her who she’s always been—mine.

Have you been Aleatha’d?

Secrets is book one of the Web of Sin trilogy

For series information visit:

My Review

“In the midst of blistering heat, his menacing demeanor appeared calculating yet calm if not downright cold as he scrutinized me from head to toe. There was confidence in his disposition. It was as if instead of the temperature radiating from the sun, it was the heat of his gaze penetrating beyond my surface to me–the real me.”

“He expected more–my compliance to his every order.”

“My life is covered by a veil of secrets, and you have the ability to rip it off, to shed light on what I’ve never known.”

Secrets is a deliciously intriguing and spellbinding contemporary romance. This is the kind of story that grabs you from page one and will keep you on your toes right until the very end. We’ve been spoiled, seeing the lighter side of Aleatha. Well, I’m here to tell you that the darker side is back and I have been Aleatha’d and I can not wait for more…..

I love a story that grabs you instantly and keeps you guessing. The plot to this story is spellbinding and will leave you utterly captivated. You’ll have a million and one questions and hardly any answers. The characters just as intriguing as you would expect them to be, barley revealing anything and yet leave you aching for more. Kennedy has been on the run for the past ten years. Living an identity that no one should know. Her true name, Araneae, never to be uttered. She is sassy, can hold her own and is a force to be reckoned with. She has a lot of fight, but in the end can roll with the punches when need be. And Sterling….right off bat I knew he was going to be the anti-hero that I wanted him to be. Calling him a jerk doesn’t even do it justice. He’s the kind of guy you want to strangle, but in the same breath, you find yourself rooting for him. He’s complicated. He’s used to always getting his way and doesn’t let anyone argue with him. He’s dominate, alpha and always in control. When he has his mind set on something, all bets are off. Together, these two are a raging inferno. They push each others buttons and have some seriously explosive chemistry. Their story is sexy, seductive and just riddled with suspense. I couldn’t wait to see just how their story was going to play out…..

Secrets is the kind of story that gives you a little, but likes to really keep you in the dark. I don’t know 100% what’s going on. I have some theories, of course. But, I can’t wait to see how this web of secrets and lies will unfold. Like I said, I have a million and one questions and am dying for answers. I need to know what’s going on. I need to know what will happen next. I need to know who can really be trusted and I need to know what lies ahead for Araneae & Sterling.

I loved every single second of Araneae & Sterling’s story. It’s fast paced, suspenseful and utterly captivating. Their story will seduce you and keep you asking questions. It will become your next addiction and will keep you hanging right until the very end. And boy does that ending leave you burning for more. Like I said in the beginning, I have totally and 100% been Aleatha’d and can not wait to see what lies ahead for us in book 2 in the Web of Sin Series….

My Review

“He just looked at me in a way that made me feel like I was some kind of jigsaw puzzle he couldn’t piece together. Our gazes collided and held. My breath caught. Something….something hot and unwanted flared to life between us.”

“Life without you is like a broken pencil. Pointless.”

“If I had to do it all over, I would. Without a fucking doubt, I would do it again, because the only other option would be that you wouldn’t be standing in front of me–pissed off, but breathing. Alive and so damn beautiful that it kills me a little each time I look at you.”

This book. As a fan of the Lux Series, I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life for this book. Words can not even express how excited I was to hear that we would be returning to the Lux world. I was over the moon, excited and on pins and needles. Anxious to get my hands on this book and see what new adventure lies ahead. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed at all. From the moment I started reading The Darkest Star, it felt like I was home. Like I was with an old friend, but a whole new one at the same time. I was addicted and utterly captivated. Wild horses could not stop me from putting this book down.

The Darkest Star picks up a while after Opposition left off with a new story and threat to the world as we know it. It follows the story of Evie and Luc. Evie is seventeen and her biggest worry is getting busted underage at a club known for humans and Luxen to mix freely. Evie is awkward and out of place, but will do anything to support a friend, even if that means showing up at club despite what her instincts are telling her. The one thing she never planned on was meeting Luc. She feels an instant and unexplained pull to him. She tries to fight it and stay away, but before she knows it, she finds herself in a world she never expected to be a part of. A place where nothing makes sense and everything she thought she knew may not be….

The Darkest Star is a thrilling and entertaining read. To say I devoured it would be a total understatement. This book is totally one of those cancel all your plans, turn off your phone and lock yourself in your room type reads. You won’t want to put this book down. Trust me, I literally had to force myself to take a break and eat some breakfast; it was that good.

The Darkest Star gave me everything I was looking for and then some. From new friends to old. To a captivating plot with threats and danger around every corner. To delicious sexual tension and oh so many swoon worthy moments. The Darkest Star is fast paced and action packed. There certainly was never a dull moment. This is the kind of book that reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this genre to begin with.

The Darkest Star is hands down one of the best YA books I’ve read this year. It’s reignited my love for this genre and the Lux Series. I still have some burning questions and am super excited to see where this story is going to go next!

Review Tour: Fall (VIP #3) by Kristen Callihan

The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways.

In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip.

Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands.

Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor.

An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room.

Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun.

Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything.

All we have to do is trust enough to fall.

My Review

“I’ve performed for movie stars. I’ve played for royalty,  and artists, and for other musicians. There’s never been any hesitation  or need to impress. To make music is like breathing.”

“Jax Blackwood sings like he’s telling you a secret that only you’re worthy of hearing. “

“There isn’t anyone I want to be around more  than you. You occupy my thoughts, haunt my dreams. I can no more stay away from you than I can keep my heart from beating. “

Fall is the third book in the VIP Series from author Kristen Callihan. Fall is fast paced and addicting. The tension and banter will consume you and leave you unable to put this book down.

Fall follows the story of Jax and Stella. From the moment I met these two, I was utterly addicted to them. From the similarities they shared when shopping to their fantastic banter, I couldn’t get enough of these two. I wanted to see and know more. I couldn’t wait for them to interact with one another again. And I gotta tell you, these two did not disappoint. Fate kept throwing them together in the best possible ways. Jax and Stella couldn’t be more perfect for one another if they tried. It was scary how in sync these two were. They both knew pain and understood loneliness. Stella was such a beautiful soul, and life had taken advantage of that. She was always afraid to let people in because no one in her life ever stayed. And for Jax, being a rock star isn’t all its cracked up to be. It’s filled with many highs and lows and no one really takes a chance to get to know the real you. And if anyone dares get close, he pushes them away to save them from the disappointment he knows he will cause. Together these two were the perfect match. They got one another and brought each other back to life. Their story consumed me and left me an emotional mess at times.

Fall is a consuming and addictive story. The writing is flawless and captivating. I swear, I felt like I had waited my whole life to get to read these words and I loved every single second of it. This book deals with some tough issues such as abandonment & mental health. But, the author does an amazing job with these tough issues. She made the pain, the dark moments and loneliness easy to understand and relate to. She made me see that not everyone is perfect, but that everyone deserves to be loved and cherished.

Fall took me on one heck of an emotional ride, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. These two lost souls were so wonderful and so perfectly suited for them. I loved falling in love with these characters and seeing their story play out. Fall is filled with exciting banter and addictive characters. There is delicious tension and some seriously hot moments. This story will frustrate you. It will make you swoon. It will make you fall in love and will tempt you to throw your kindle. With just the right amount of steam, angst and emotion; you’ll find yourself unable to put this book down. Fall is the kind of story that will pull at your heart and keep you glued to the pages right until the very end.

I loved every moment of this book from beginning to end and thoroughly enjoyed spending my day getting lost in Stella & Jax.

*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*

I clear my throat. “While I was eating my ice cream—”

He snorts, but remains tense.

“I thought about how you looked familiar to me.”

“It was the guilt haunting you.”

“Or … And I’m just throwing this out there. You’re Jax Blackwood.”

He actually flinches. “Fuck. You recognized me.”

“It was bound to happen. John? Really?”

His chin tips in a pugnacious angle. “It’s my name. John is … me. Jax is who I am onstage.”

I picture him performing, all electric energy and raw passion and sheer talent. It’s a sight to behold. Hell, a couple of really hot fantasies have been induced by that sight.

While I’m lost in a teen fantasy, his eyes dart around like he’s expecting someone to pop out from behind a snow mound and take his picture. Then his gaze snags on me. My expression must be slightly punch drunk, because his entire body leans away from mine. Not exactly flattering to realize he’s afraid I’ll try to lick his face or something.

I snap my gaping mouth closed. “Oh, calm down. It’s not like I’m going to start squealing and try to grab your junk.”

His expression lightens a little. “I think if you grabbed my junk, I’d be the one squealing.”

“True. I have surprisingly strong hands.” When he stares at me in horror, I hold them up and wiggle my fingers. “Yoga. It’s highly effective.”

“My balls just flinched in terror.”

“Consider yourself warned.”

He snorts but then glances at our building. “You really live here?”

“Do you really think I hunted you down?”

John—because I can’t seem to think of him as Jax—runs his hand through his damp hair, which makes his biceps bunch and twitch. “Yeah … that does sound crazy.”

Crazy. This whole situation is. One day, I’m offered a four-month home in a dream condo, the next I’m standing on my stoop talking to a rock star. The biggest legend of my generation. I honestly don’t know how I’m not stammering right now.

“I can’t believe we’re neighbors,” I say without thinking.

His green eyes glint in the afternoon light, but he pauses and looks at me more closely. “You know, not to sound conceited here, but you’re kind of leering at me right now.”

My chin snaps up like I’ve been hit, even as my body flushes with embarrassment. Shit. I totally had been leering. No, not leering. But I had been staring at him in awe. Ugh. “Well, you do sound conceited. I was simply making polite eye contact.”

Liar McLiar-Face.

Review: The Simple Life by Tara Sivec

*A standalone romantic comedy with a lot of heart*

Brooklyn Manning thought her life was perfect in every way, until it crumbled down around her and turned into a dumpster fire. With her pride wounded and her tail tucked between her legs, she leaves New York and goes back to her tiny hometown of White Timber, Montana.

No more twenty-four-hour taco trucks, no more shopping at the best designer stores within walking distance, no more giving taxi drivers the finger when they angrily honk at her. She didn’t think it could get any worse. But then Clint Hastings walked into the room and insulted her.

Her arch nemesis from high school is no longer a nerdy computer whiz, masturbating to pictures in PC World magazine in his free time (allegedly). He’s grown up to be a hot-as-hell cowboy, and she has no other choice but to be a smart ass right back to him. After all, it’s what they do. It’s what they’ve always done, and twelve years apart hasn’t changed anything.

Only this time, getting under each other’s skin is a hell of a lot more fun than it used to be.

My Review

“Then Brooklyn walked back into my life, and it felt like I’d just woken up from a coma. Everything was louder, more colorful, brighter, newer, and more exciting. I couldn’t wait to wake up every day just to catch a glimpse of her.”

“She made me feel alive again for the first time in years.”

“You’re a pain in my ass. But fighting with you every day for a month has made me happier than getting along with someone else all my life. You drive me crazy, you turn me on more than any woman I’ve ever known, and you make me laugh. You’re stubborn, and smart, and strong and independent…”

The Simple Life is everything I’ve ever wanted or needed from a rom-com. Have you ever read a book that just had you laughing until tears came out of your eyes? A book with excellent banter and explosive chemistry? A book where the characters gave just as good as they got? A book that gave you all the feels and you never saw it coming? For me, that is this book. The Simple Life is hands down one of the best rom-com’s that I’ve read this year.

From the moment I picked up The Simple Life I was HOOKED. I mean completely and utterly sucked into the life of Brooklyn Manning. The things that happened to this woman, I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But, I’d be a liar if I said she didn’t have me laughing my butt off. With her life in shambles, I was excited to see how she would turn things around. And when a unexpected job fell into her lap that had her facing off with her arch nemesis. I just knew I was in for one heck of a ride. And let me tell you, Brooklyn and Clint do not disappoint. I love, love, loved the banter between the two of them. It was just so entertaining. They didn’t hold anything back and I just lived for the moments they were together because I didn’t know what they would say next! And the sparks! OMG, the sparks!! They were everywhere and so palpable. You just knew that if these two were to get over themselves, that they would be dynamite. I loved the push and pull and the flutters they gave my heart. I was swooning all over the place and couldn’t wait to see these two figure things out.

The Simple Life was a terrific read from beginning to end. I easily devoured this book in just a few short hours. It was everything I needed and then some. It was smart. It was funny. The story-line was addicting and kept me on my toes. The characters were real, flawed and just totally stole my heart. This story made me laugh so much, my cheeks still hurt as I’m typing up this review. It had the perfect amount of steam and just the right amount of drama. Simply put this story made me fall totally head over heels and I loved every single moment of it.

A few seconds later, the man I saw riding the horse out front walks into the room with his cowboy hat-covered head tipped down low so I can’t see his face, carrying Mia in his arms.

Oh, screw you, ovaries!

No, I still don’t like children, but come on! Seeing a hot, manly cowboy wearing tight jeans, with his cowboy boots thumping across the floor, and carrying a kid in his arms would make anyone weak. Too bad he’s Nicole’s husband. Damn. I should have paid better attention to her Facebook photos. Lucky, lucky girl.

And then he lifts his head and our eyes meet.

Wait just one damn minute. This isn’t possible. There’s no fucking way.

“You!” I shout, my eyes bugging out of my head.

“What the hell is she doing here?” he growls, setting Mia down on the ground.

My only source of happiness right now is that Mia presses her face to his jean clad leg and wipes her nose back and forth against the material, leaving a trail of snot behind.

Clint Hastings. Nicole’s older brother and my arch nemesis growing up.

Whatever. I know I’m not a superhero in a comic book, but this guy has been the bane of my existence since the day I met him when I was in kindergarten, he was in second grade, and he threw a rock at my head. I kicked him in his tiny nuggets first, since he told me I couldn’t play baseball with him and his friends because I was a girl, but that’s not the point. If this were a comic book and we were meeting in a dark alley, I’d be holding my fists above my head next to a talk bubble that says So, we meet again. Tonight I will get my revenge and you will die by my iron fists! WHAM! BAM! KAPOW!

I cannot believe I was checking out his ass when I got here. There’s got to be a bottle of bleach somewhere in this kitchen I can pour into my eyes.

“What am I doing here? What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be off in Silicon Valley becoming the next Mark Zuckerberg?” I ask, making sure my eyes stay above his neck and aren’t tempted to head south and see if those tiny nuggets hugged in his tight jeans grew in size since the last time I threw my foot into them.

Which would have been his senior year of high school, right here in this very kitchen, at his graduation party when he asked me if I bought the dress I was wearing in the toddler section.

It was a LBD! It was supposed to be tight and tiny, goddammit!

And seriously, what is he doing here? Last I heard through the high school grapevine, after he graduated from UCLA, he became a hotshot software developer at some huge company in Los Angeles and hadn’t been back home in years. Not that I ever asked. Or cared. You know, just idle chitchat after one too many glasses of wine and a friend request on Facebook from someone we went to high school with.

“Awww, have you been keeping tabs on me all these years, fancy pants? I knew you always had a thing for me.” Clint smirks.

“In your dreams. You smell like horse shit.”

“You look like horse shit,” he fires back, that stupid grin never leaving his face.
