Everything Poppy has ever believed in is a lie, including the man she was falling in love with. Thrust among those who see her as a symbol of a monstrous kingdom, she barely knows who she is without the veil of the Maiden. But what she does know is that nothing is as dangerous to her as him. The Dark One. The Prince of Atlantia. He wants her to fight him, and that’s one order she’s more than happy to obey. He may have taken her, but he will never have her.
Casteel Da’Neer is known by many names and many faces. His lies are as seductive as his touch. His truths as sensual as his bite. Poppy knows better than to trust him. He needs her alive, healthy, and whole to achieve his goals. But he’s the only way for her to get what she wants—to find her brother Ian and see for herself if he has become a soulless Ascended. Working with Casteel instead of against him presents its own risks. He still tempts her with every breath, offering up all she’s ever wanted. Casteel has plans for her. Ones that could expose her to unimaginable pleasure and unfathomable pain. Plans that will force her to look beyond everything she thought she knew about herself—about him. Plans that could bind their lives together in unexpected ways that neither kingdom is prepared for. And she’s far too reckless, too hungry, to resist the temptation.
But unrest has grown in Atlantia as they await the return of their Prince. Whispers of war have become stronger, and Poppy is at the very heart of it all. The King wants to use her to send a message. The Descenters want her dead. The wolven are growing more unpredictable. And as her abilities to feel pain and emotion begin to grow and strengthen, the Atlantians start to fear her. Dark secrets are at play, ones steeped in the blood-drenched sins of two kingdoms that would do anything to keep the truth hidden. But when the earth begins to shake, and the skies start to bleed, it may already be too late.
“The Dark One wasn’t someone most would dare to anger.”
“And that was another lie, another fact exposed to everyone who stood here now. I immediately knew yet another truth.”
“Let me help you replace the fear and helplessness. I can erase it. I promise.” “Let me be enough, at least for tonight.”
“I chose him because he made me feel like I was something other than the Maiden, and he saw me when no one else ever really did. He made me feel alive. He valued me for who I am and didn’t try to control me. And then it all seemed like a lie once I realized the truth of who he was and why he was a part of my life.”
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire picks up right where From Blood and Ash left off and left me utterly glued to the pages. Immediately we are thrust back into the story of Casteel and Poppy. Everything Poppy thought she knew was a lie and Casteel proves to be someone other than he seems. In spite of everything, Poppy and Casteel can not fight the pull they feel towards one another. Casteel’s plans for Poppy have changed and it will take a miracle to get Poppy on board. Will Poppy be able to trust Casteel’s motives? Will Poppy and Casteel give in to their feelings and make a real go of it? Will Casteel make his way home before all is lost? There’s only one way to find out….
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire delivered everything that I was hoping for in a follow to From Blood and Ash. Jennifer Armentrout has once again knocked out of the park with her fascinating characters and an intriguing plot. Her world-building with this series is off the charts and has me desperate to learn more about the lands and people that inhabit this area. The characters are real, flawed, and easy to connect with. Every single one of them adds to the story and keeps you coming back for more.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire is gripping, engaging, and will leave you on the edge of your seat. There’s romance and secrets. Betrayal and oh, so many questions. Truths will be questioned and loyalties will be tested. War is coming and it’s only a matter of time before you have to make the choice as to which side you are on. And romance….OMG! The romance. It is oh, so sweet and was exactly what I needed to take my mind off the more nerve-wracking parts. If I thought I was in love with Poppy and Casteel before, they both took it up a notch in this book!
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire delivered on all fronts and was exactly the read I was looking for. Jennifer Armentrout has given us a fresh and exciting fantasy world with characters I can’t get enough of and an ending that will leave readers talking for quite some time. Once again, I have a million and one questions that I need to be answered asap!! One thing is for sure, I will be dying to get my hands on the next book and seeing how everything will come together in the end. And if I know Jennifer Armentrout, it’s going to be another wild, thrilling, and epic ride….
