Review: Unbreak My Heart by Nicole Jacquelyn

Posted on

What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend?
If you’re Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane’s in the military and away for long periods helps-but when tragedy strikes, everything changes.
After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel’s death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret.
Shane’s been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too – for sleeping with his wife’s best friend and liking it . . . liking her. Kate’s ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer.
Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate’s only choice is to fight for the future she deserves – with or without Shane. . .

My Review

Talk about an emotional read. Unbreak My Heart took me on one gut wrenching, heartbreaking, emotional journey. This book seriously had my emotions all over the place.

From the moment you pick up this book, you can’t help be intrigued by the characters and their story. You think that you have a feel for them and the direction their story will take, only to have them prove you wrong. Unbreak My Heart is told from dual points of view and will completely captivate you. This story is so well written, so heartbreaking that you won’t be able to look away or put it down.

I found myself so frustrated and so angry at Shane at times. He didn’t deal with his grief and pain the best way that he could and it broke my heart how he would treat Kate. He was so hot and cold. I didn’t know how he was going to act from one minute to the next. I actually had a very hard time liking Shane and honestly believed that he was never going to win me over. Well, I have to tell you, I love and I mean I love when characters prove me wrong. Shane is in no way perfect. He’s done and said more hurtful things than I can count. But, man, once his eyes are open….watch out. He is a totally different man. He is man that loves his family. A man that will fight for what he wants. A man that knows he made a mistake and will grovel and do whatever he can to win back the woman he loves. And it’s in those moments, that he won me over. And Kate…well, she’s not perfect either. If I was in her shoes, I wouldn’t have let Shane treat me the way he treated her for as long as he did. That being said, she had her reasons for staying and putting up with him, when others would have left. She is way stronger that anyone would think. And I have to say, I loved when she started to stand up for herself. She made Shane open his eyes and see things for how they really were.

Unbreak My Heart isn’t really a traditional love story. Shane and Kate’s story will rip your heart out and it will take you on the most amazing journey. Their journey to HEA certainly is not an easy one, and at times, it doesn’t feel as though there can be a happy ending in sight. But, I think that’s what makes this story so great. It isn’t easy. It will frustrate you. It will make you want to reach your hand into your kindle and knock some sense into the main characters. But, it will also give you hope. It will show you just how blind and cruel loss can make you. It will open your eyes to what’s in front of you. It will make you fall in love again. And in the end, it will have you rooting for a character that never stood a chance, in your eyes.
