One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who’s forever owned his heart.
Justin Carter has a secret. He’s not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy…and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she’d ever forgive him.
Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she’s done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she’ll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.
For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate’s given him a shot at redemption, he’s determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton…well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.
“Everyone knows I’m not good for much, but I was made to love this girl. I’m good for her and I’m good with her. It may’ve taken me three years to fully realize that, but I know it now. Soon, she will too.”
The Natural History of Us is the second book in The Fine Art of Pretending series and it follows the story of Peyton and Justin. Even though this is the second book in this series, it can totally be read as a stand-alone. Peyton and Justin’s story is a great second chance romance and story of redemption. When we first meet up with Peyton, Peyton and Justin have been thrown together to work on a class project. That’s the last thing Peyton wants. You see, Peyton and Justin used to be together. Peyton was very much in love with him, until Justin broke her heart. But, Justin has a secret. Even though three years have passed, it hasn’t changed his feelings for Peyton. And now that the two have to work together, Justin is hoping to finally set the past right and show Peyton that the two of them are meant to be together.
The Natural History of Us was a quick and easy read for me. It was a super sweet story of redemption, fighting for what you want and a second chance at love. I fell in love with Peyton and Justin almost instantly. I loved the chemistry that they had and you could tell right away that these two had a lot of unfinished business. I loved that their story was not only told from dual points of view, but it was also told in past and present tense. So, it really gave you a feel for who the characters are, where things went wrong and how they’ve changed.
Once again, Rachel Harris has showed me why I enjoy YA so much. She has given me a well written story with a fun and entertaining story-line. She’s provided me with characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with and will find yourself rooting for them to figure things out and grab that HEA. The Natural History of Us is light and funny with just the right amount of angst, drama and romance. I can’t wait to read more from this series!
