My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I’d suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you’re more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn’t remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I’d find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I’m ready to fight for her…fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.
“You’re lost, Cole, but you can find your way home; the candle has been in the window since you left and we’ve been waiting.”
“Came from shit, have had one bright light in the dark hell I’ve lived in, gotten too used to being in the light, Mia, I ain’t going back to the dark.”
What can I say about His Light in the Dark? Told from dual points of view, this story is well-written and gripping. It pulls you in from the very first page and has your heart aching for Cole. You are immediately consumed by his story and hope that he will find some light in the dark that takes over his life. His Light in the Dark is is intense and heart-pounding. It will take you on one heck of a roller-coaster ride and will keep you guessing right until the very end.
His Light in the Dark is full of angst, drama and suspense. There is romance and angst. There is action and betrayal. You will be left asking questions and wondering who is really telling the truth. I loved the connection between Mia and Cole. They shared something really special at a young age and despite everything that Cole had been through, Mia never gave up on him. The two of them had so much push and pull. I loved the will they, won’t they moments and was dying for them to give in.
His Light in the Dark is not an easy tale. It is heartbreaking and intense and it will down right frustrate you. The subject matter in intense, but was handled very well. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and the closer you get to the end, the more twists and turns are thrown your way. All in all, I thought this was a really great read and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
