Book Review – Eight Days a Week by Amber L. Johnson

Once again Amber L Johnson has managed to write a vibrant and engaging story filled with colorful characters. Eight Days a Week is a very different book to Puddle Jumping (my other favorite ALJ read) but I was still captivated by this story and hated having to put it down in order to deal with real life (AKA my children).

Eight Days a Week is about Andrew Lyons and Gwen Stone. Andrew is a (hot) directionless twenty-something, who needs to get a job (and a life) and get out of his sisters apartment as soon as possible. Gwen is the working mother of two children and finds herself in a bind childcare wise. Flustered by her current predicament, she hires Drew on a whim and shenanigans ensue. As attraction between Drew and Gwen grows, so do the secrets between them and an emotional disaster is inevitable.

Eight Days a Week is solely told from Drew’s point of view, which made for a refreshing and exciting change. I LOVE when a male point of view is done well and this was done extremely well. Drew’s personality shone out of the pages on this story and there was none of the same-same feeling I often get while reading a male POV. It was chock full of humor, and the predicaments Drew found himself in while learning the ways of the ‘manny’ had me laughing out loud more than once. Things that mothers don’t even think twice about can be real conundrums for the average manny!

“I didn’t feel too awkward around them yet. Maybe I was a natural at this childcare shit. Of course, it had been less than two minutes.”

Amber L Johnson has a knack for writing charismatic and lovable characters. I have adored every character in her books and have found each of them relatable in different ways. I felt drawn into this story immediately and loved the time I spent getting to know these characters. This story did have serious undertones but with the humorous situations and hot romance peppered throughout the book, it was the perfect balance of both serious and fun. I never felt pulled too far in one direction.

Eight Days a Week is another hit for me from Amber L Johnson. It’s safe to say I’m a fan for life and I can’t wait to see what Ms Johnson gives us next!

“Where have you been all my life?”

“I guess I was waiting for you to find me. I’m sorry I’ve been so scared.”

Book Review – The Forged by Magic Trilogy by S. L. Gavyn

I recently found myself taken by an Urban Fantasy mood. I had nothing lined up so I turned to Amazon for inspiration. After aaaages browsing through book after book, I found Brimstone. Admittedly, the cover did not grab me but hey, it’s not the first time (or even the 500th time) that I was leery over an urban fantasy book cover. However, the blurb COMPLETELY suckered me in. In fact, it had me at the word ‘Fey’. My most beloved of all ‘other-world’ creatures. There’s just something so romantic and whimsical about the Fey.

I ended up devouring all three book in the Forged by Magic Trilogy in just three days. I loved it THAT much. It had all the elements that make up a great urban fantasy for me; magic, intrigue, fascinating non-humans, hot hero and kick-ass heroine!

A manipulative boss.
Demon attacking at every turn.
A Fey Prince she’s tried desperately to avoid.
A deception of massive proportion.
It’s tough being a single woman these days.

Genivieve Belaveau was a simple girl with simple needs. For example, all she wanted to do was sit in her favorite pub and have a drink with her friends. After centuries of being imprisoned she vowed she would never be forced to do anything again. Unfortunately, her boss has a different agenda. He manipulates Vieve into stealing from the one man on the planet she has tried to deny herself for centuries. Primarily because her own emotions for this man will lead to her destruction.
Raynon Dubhshaine the Scottish prince of the Fey, a dying race of the strongest warriors on the planet. Their women are unable to bring a child to term without one or both dying. He has tried to give his people hope but how can he tell them it will all be alright when his own mate won’t even acknowledge him?
Vieve isn’t interested in getting locked up (or knocked up) at castle Fey. She just wants to do her job, save her friend, and get her tail back to America. But when she’s deceived by one she trusts there will be only one place to go. After all, sometimes a girl has to say no. And sometimes there’s no taking no for an answer.

The background story we got on this book was minimal, to be fair. At times I felt like I was missing a book that explained to me whats actually going on. The background story that we did get though made for an amazing introduction to this world and this story. It drew me into the story and connected me with the heroine in the best way.

The romance was hot and swoony but I didn’t find that the story lacked because of it, which is a big thing for me in a urban fantasy series. I LOVE the romance and it needs to be there but I also love experiencing the world and getting lost in the adventures of our characters. This story had the perfect balance of both adventure and romance.

There were a couple of plot holes that I either missed (god I hope not) or that remained unanswered. Perhaps this was done purposefully but I’m unsure of that at this point. There is another series written by this author called the Avery Tywella series that is a continuing series but based in the same world. Many of the characters bridge across both series so I’m absolutely dying to get my hands on this series and read more from this world! I’m officially adding S. L. Gavyn to my ‘favorite UF authors’ list!

SALE!!! Grasping At Eternity by Karen Amanda Hooper is FREE For A Limited Time!!!

Grasping At Eternity is FREE for a limited time!!!

Leave it to Maryah Woodsen to break the one rule that will screw up eternity: Never erase your memories.

Before entering this life, Maryah did the unthinkable—she erased. Now, at seventeen years old, she’s clueless that her new adoptive family has known her for centuries, that they are perpetually reincarnated souls, and that they have supernatural abilities. Oh, and she’s supposed to love (not despise) Nathan, the green-eyed daredevil who saved her life.

Nathan is convinced his family’s plan to spark Maryah’s memory is hopeless, but his love for her is undying. After spending (and remembering) so many lifetimes together, being around an empty version of his soulmate is heart shattering. He hates acting like a stalker, but has no choice because the evil outcast who murdered Maryah in their last lifetime is still after her.

While Maryah’s hunter inches closer, she and Nathan make assumptions and hide secrets that rip them further apart. Maryah has to believe in the magic within her, Nathan must have faith in the power of their love, and both need to grasp onto the truth before they lose each other forever—and discover just how lonely eternity can be.

“If you love someone, put their name in a circle; because hearts can be
broken, but circles never end.”

My Review

Grasping at Eternity was a really great and unique story. The story started off with such a bang! I knew this was going to be a great story.

The story begins with Maryah surviving her entire family been murdered and she goes to visit/live with her godmother. She is clueless to the fact that she has ever lived previous lives and that she has any special abilities.

And then there is Nathaniel, he is Maryah’s soulmate. He is devastated that Maryah has erased her memory and is so heartbroken by it. He is hopeful though that her memory will come back to her.

There was a lot of great surprises and I loved all the characters! This is a wonderful and refreshing story of reincarnation, love and friendship that lasts a lifetime 🙂

The ending was wonderful. Most of the loose ends were tied up, but I am really looking forward to the next book and seeing more of Nathaniel and Maryah. And I can’t wait to learn more about the Kindrily!

GRASPING AT ETERNITY (The Kindrily 1)

By Karen Amanda Hooper

The Kindrily Series

Taking Back Forever (Kindrily 2)

Forever is worth the fight.

Maryah erased all memory of her past lives, but she couldn’t erase her soul mate Nathan, or his undying love. Now, Maryah and Nathan have a second chance at a future together, but first Maryah must remember the person she used to be and embrace her supernatural gifts—more than one kindrily member’s life depends on it.

Maryah’s power is Harmony’s best hope of finding her kidnapped soul mate, Gregory. But Harmony isn’t big on asking anyone for help, and she’s tired of waiting, so she’s taking matters into her own hands. Heaven help anyone who stands in her way.

Fighting For Infinity (Kindrily 3)

Every moment, every lifetime, every decision—including her choice to erase—has led Maryah to this.

Two outcomes are possible: an infinite happy-ever-after with her kindrily or the final severing of her relationship with Nathan.

Closer to the enemy than ever before, Maryah unravels the diabolical plan that Dedrick has been manipulating into place for centuries. Revelations, secrets, and lies surface faster than Maryah can process. She doesn’t know who to trust, what to believe, or how to save her loved ones from the desolate future Dedrick is so close to executing.

Guided by an enigmatic raven-haired prisoner, Maryah fights body and soul to save Nathan, her kindrily, and countless others. But is her love strong enough to alter a prophecy written in the stars?

Book Review: Shooting Scars by Karina Halle

The USA Today Bestseller!!

Trapped by him and his entourage of killers, Ellie is forced to commit a dangerous, heinous crime-or Javier will kill Camden. Camden McQueen can’t forget Ellie Watt. As Camden straddles the line between love and retribution, he vows to do everything in his power to get her back. But if Camden unleashes his dark side, will Ellie still love him?

My Review

Shooting Scars picks up right where Sins & Needles left off. Ellie finds herself in a situation that she never expected to find herself in. Her past has finally caught up with her and now she must face the consequences. She finds herself trapped in a dangerous game with Javier.  She must help him commit a serious crime or Camden will pay the ultimate price. Will Ellie be able to stay ahead of the game or will she fall for Javier’s tricks??

Camden is reeling from Ellie’s sacrifice. He attempts to start his life over, but life has other plans. He discovers once again that people are not who they seem and there’s always a score to be settled. Camden decides to take a chance and try to save Ellie from Javier. He will soon learn the reality of life on the run and that when on the run, you will have to do things you never thought yourself capable of. Will Camden be able to save Ellie from Javier or will Ellie have already gone back to her old ways???

Let me just say WOW! Seriously, I didn’t know who was conning who or what their real motives were. Just when I thought I figured things out, I’d be thrown for a loop. I really enjoyed trying to figure this one out. There were so many great twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what was going on.

This book had everything I was looking for and more. There was so much drama, suspense, action and steamy moments. I didn’t even mind the love triangle. I do know who’s team I’m rooting for, but that’s my little secret.

“True love doesn’t have a sick desperation to it, and an undercurrent of doom. People who burn that brightly still get burned in the end”

I really enjoyed Shooting Scars. One thing I did learn, is that revenge can drive people to do crazy things. This book took me on one heck of a ride and I can’t wait to see how it’s all going to play out in the end!
